Dave Stoddart ~ 1947 - 2022

Dave Stoddart was born on January 30, 1947, and passed away on December 12, 2022.

Dave and Linda met when he answered an ad in the Sacramento Bee she placed, wanting to sell her 1966 VW bug. Dave wanted to build a dune buggy. They agreed, over the course of their happy 38 years together, that "It was love at first sight."

Douglas County schools at Lake Tahoe closed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County School District has announced Zephyr Cove Elementary and George Whittell High School will be closed on Thursday due to roads and weather. Valley schools are open with "hub" bus stops only (see here for info).

Students at Lake Tahoe Unified, Washoe County, and Tahoe Truckee school districts are on holiday break this week.

El Dorado County offices, including the library, are closed in South Lake Tahoe due to weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County offices in South Lake Tahoe will be closed on Thursday, January 5, due to road and weather conditions.

This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Library staff reminds the public they can access its digital media collection which includes ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. They are teamed with the Northnet Library System, and Marinet and Peninsula Library Systems to make the collection even bigger.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has new battalion chief and fire marshal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – There is new leadership within South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) with promotions for Captain Justin Keys and Captain Kim George.

Fire Chief Jim Drennan selected Keys as battalion chief, effective December 10, and George as fire marshal, effective January 9.

As battalion chief, a position vacated when Drennan was appointed fire chief, Keys will be responsible for the Training Division. He is one of three battalion chiefs with SLTFR (the other two are Karl Koeppen and Jay Manning).

What is a "bomb cyclone" and what does it mean for Lake Tahoe?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A term that has been getting a lot of coverage with the incoming storm is "bomb cyclone," but was is it? A "bomb cyclone" is an area of a low-pressure system that intensifies by 24 millibars within 24 hours (millibars are a unit used to measure atmospheric pressure).

This is not a new meteorological term and has been around for quite some time, but it hadn't been used much. It is more common in the northeast where they see rapidly changing pressure systems more often, but it happens in the west as well.

Flatstick Pub teams with Sierra Child and Family Services for Sunday FundDay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe’s first indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, also known as Tipsy Putt, will be teaming up with Sierra Child & Family Services to give back to the South Lake Tahoe community.

Each Sunday in January, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased to the local nonprofit.

Most Douglas County warming centers close

UPDATE 1/5/23: Douglas County said the warming center at Harveys Lake Tahoe has closed but the county said it will reopen if conditions change.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County has closed the warming centers at Douglas County Community & Senior Center and the East Fork Fire Protection District Station 4. The county will reopen the centers if they are needed.

The warming center at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe remains open. The address for the warming center is 18 Hwy 50, Stateline, Nev.

Liberty encourages Lake Tahoe customers to prepare for the approaching extreme weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is staging crews and preparing for potential impacts from the incoming storm.  They encourage customers to prepare as well. 

Winter weather and extreme winds are anticipated across the region this week. The expected combination of snow, freezing temperatures, and dangerous winds may produce hazardous conditions and the potential for outages. Liberty's crews are prepared to respond to outage emergencies. Liberty encourages customers to prepare as well.

First baby of the year arrives early as parents in South Lake Tahoe visiting family

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first baby of the year born in South Lake Tahoe didn't wait long to enter the world just 93 minutes into 2023. Santiago Alejandro Rios was born on January 1 at 1:33 a.m., weighing 4 pounds, 3.7 ounces, and measuring 17 inches long. He was born to Amelia Rios Loya and Francisco Lopez of San Jose, Calif. with Dr. Elisabeth Nigrini overseeing the delivery at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center.

Washoe County Sheriff holds press conference about Jeremy Renner's "tragic accident"

RENO, Nev. - Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon to clarify details regarding actor Jeremy Renner's New year's Day accident and his department's response.

Renner, who is a resident of Washoe County, lives about two miles from the summit of Mt. Rose.

First snow survey of the year near Lake Tahoe: 55.5 inches of snow, 177% of average

The first snow survey of the season at Phillips Station was conducted Tuesday by the Department of Water Resources (DWR). This manual survey recorded 55.5 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent of 17.5 inches, which is 177 percent of the average for this location which is at the entrance to Sierra-at-Tahoe.

The snow water equivalent measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack and is a key component of DWR’s water supply forecast. Statewide the snowpack is 174 percent of average for this date.

Thomas Warren Schwindeman ~ 1986 - 2022

In loving memory of Thomas Warren Schwindeman.

Thomas was born in South Lake Tahoe, California, on February 6, 1986. Thomas passed away on December 25, 2022.

Thomas is survived by his mother, Julie Schwindeman, Jasmine (sister) and Jahn Jacobson, Niece Cora Jacobson, Aunt Sue Vradenberg, Uncle Douglas and Karen Broemmer, Aunt Paula and Cousin Nadine Schwindeman and Cousins Hector and Kasadid Broemmer.

Laine sworn in as El Dorado County supervisor, Thomas become board chair

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Brooke Laine was sworn to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, January 4, 2023. She takes her role after winning the November election and replacing the termed-out supervisor from District 5, Sue Novasel.

It took just 20 minutes into her term when she had to be the voice of reason as the board decided on its 2023 leadership roles.

New laws for 2023 in South Lake Tahoe and California

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Legislature was busy in 2022, passing nearly 1,200 bills with nearly 1,000 of those becoming law after they were signed by Governor Newsom.

It is hard to know what is new for 2023, but good to know that many were minor fixes to previous laws, while others pertain to certain industries or phased in over time.

NDOT announces winning names in snowplow contest

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nevada Thaw Enforcement is one of the creative winning names selected in the Nevada Department of Transportation’s first-ever Name-A-Snowplow contest.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, December 12, Bread & Broth’s volunteer cooks used their very creative and talented culinary skills to prepare a tasty roast lamb dinner to serve to the guests who braved the snowy elements to attend the meal served at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall. In addition to acknowledging the Chart House for donating the lamb, the meal was made possible by the $300 funding provided by Vail’s EpicPromise Grant program for Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship.

New Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Pacific storm door has opened and an active weather period will be bringing more storms to the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin in effect from Wednesday, January 4 at 10 a.m. to Thursday, January 5 at 10 p.m.

Heavy, wet snow is possible with total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches, except 1 to 2 feet with isolated amounts of 3 feet above 7000 feet possible. Winds could gust as high as 100+ mph along the ridges.

Over 22K NV Energy customers remain without power, warming shelters set up

Crews from NV Energy continue to work around the clock to restore power to more than 22,000 customers who remain without electric service after a severe winter storm caused more than 1,000 outages on December 31, 2022, in the Reno, Tahoe, Carson City, and Minden/Gardnerville areas. The company is bringing in additional NV Energy crews from southern and eastern Nevada as well as contracted crews to assist in restoration efforts and repair the storm-damaged equipment.

At the height of the outage, over 35,000 customers were without power.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after allegedly brandishing weapon in suspected road rage incident

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call on Sunday, January 1 about a road rage incident near the Y in South Lake Tahoe.

The caller said another driver had brandished a handgun at them during the incident. They said they saw the suspect crash his vehicle into a snowbank in the eastbound lanes of Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Actor Jeremy Renner injured and airlifted from Mt. Rose area near Lake Tahoe

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) responded to a reported traumatic injury in the area of the Mt. Rose Highway at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

According to a press release, actor Jeremy Renner, who is a resident of the area, was injured and transported via care flight to a Reno area hospital.

Details of the incident have not been disclosed by WCSO and their Major Accident Investigation Team is currently looking into the circumstances of the incident.

Lake Tahoe forecast: Fast moving storm late Monday, bigger storm midweek

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as everyone is clearing out after the New Year's Eve storm, two more incoming storms are expected to impact the Lake Tahoe Basin again this week, with additional storms into the second week of 2023.

For this week, a weak storm will bring light snow accumulations to all
elevations from late Monday afternoon through daybreak Tuesday. A stronger storm will then bring gusty winds late Wednesday with another round of heavy wet Sierra snow and a mixture of rain and snow to lower elevations Wednesday night and Thursday.

Douglas County opens warming shelter due to power outages and low temperatures

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An emergency warming shelter has been activated for Douglas County residents in Gardnerville, Nev. Starting January 1, 2023, it will be at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane. The shelter will be on the senior side and will remain open until further notice.

Another round of storms is predicted to hit the region later in the week.

Several residents remain without power and freezing temperatures are expected. To contact the community center, please call (775) 782-5500.

I-80 and US-50 open; Thousands of NV Energy and Liberty Utilities customers without power

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost 3,000 Liberty Utilities customers on the South Shore, and thousands of NV Energy Customers from Douglas County to Reno are still without power to start 2023.

Crews are working around the clock to restore power.

Weather continues to wreak havoc on roads in the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The atmospheric river that slammed into California continues to cause issues for travelers as it starts to depart the state.

US-50 from Ice House Road to Meyers was closed for much of the day on Saturday, only to shut down again after briefly reopening due to poor conditions (as of 1 a.m. Sunday it is open with chain controls). Caltrans crews spent the evening pulling out cars that were ill-equipped for the heavy snow.

Saturday night updates from Caltans and NDOT

Caltrans representatives said Saturday has been one of the most challenging they’ve ever experienced due to the massive atmospheric river that hit California.

Here are some 7:30 p.m. Saturday updates:

Interstate 80 remains closed between Colfax and the state line due to whiteout conditions and dozens of stalled vehicles to rescue over Donner Summit. It most likely will remain closed for several more hours as the snow continues to fall at a steady rate.

Highway 50 reopened at about 5:30 p.m. but they will be holding traffic periodically overnight for avalanche control.

More Sierra highway closures due to poor conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to deteriorating driving conditions, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has closed sections of the Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade, and other mountain highways.

U.S. 50 from Meyers to Ice House Road remains closed due to high water levels of the American River flooding onto the highway.

Caltrans has closed parts of I-80 due to adverse conditions.

Stay off the roads tonight if at all possible. If a road shows open when you leave it may close before arriving so be tuned into up-to-the-minute reports.

Power outages due to storm in South Lake Tahoe

4:30 PM UPDATE: The power outage at Lake Tahoe has grown to almost 20,000 Liberty Utilities customers. At 4:12 p.m., a large outage occurred affecting much of the South Shore. There is no estimated time of restoral of power.

NV Energy is also reporting multiple outages, over 26,000 customers are affected in Northern Nevada.

Most of the California Liberty outage is due to the power it receives from Nevada's NV Energy. Still no cause being released.

NDOT advises against driving in current winter storm

With an atmospheric river winter storm hitting northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is urging motorists to avoid driving during inclement weather. There have already been road closures and flooding roadways.

The snow and slush that have fallen on roadways throughout the day are leading to reduced traction. As temperatures continue to drop, ice has the potential to form under a light layer of snow on the roadway. Adding to the dangerous driving conditions is the potential increase of impaired drivers following New Year’s Eve celebrations.

All hands on deck in South Lake Tahoe; Sand bags still available in city and county

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The atmospheric river is living up to its name as heavy rain fell overnight throughout the region, leaving in its wake rivers in flood stage, roads impassable, and major issues for the homeless of South Lake Tahoe.

Winter Storm Warning in place until Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Things changed quickly from heavy rain warnings to flood and winter storm warnings. The forecasted 1-2 inches of rain for Saturday at Lake Tahoe is now up to 20 inches of snow around the lake.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning until Sunday, January 1 at 4 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches, except 2 to 3 feet above 7000 feet.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

US 50 closed in both directions between Meyers and Ice House, some ski resort operations closed or on hold

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Travelers need to be aware of road closures before traveling in the Sierra. As the rain turned to heavy snow Saturday morning, rock and mudslides occurred.

US50 is closed from Sly Park to Meyers due to heavy flooding and mud at a few spots, mostly west of Whitehall. There is no estimated time of opening and motorists are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays. No detours are provided.

There is also a closure at Sly Park Road.

SR89 is closed around Emerald Bay.

Caltrans has no estimated time for the road reopening.

It is with bitter-sweet emotions I write this letter to everyone in our wonderful county.

We have been through much together these past twelve years. We have experienced tragedies and blessings. We have celebrated successes and mourned losses.

And, while I have accomplished much these past twelve years, I have all of you and all the superb staff at your Sheriff’s Office to thank for making it possible. Without their hard work and your support, we wouldn't be where we are as an agency and able to serve you at the level we do.

California snow water content 156% of normal to-date, 51% of annual average amount

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow year is off to a good start for 2022-23 after this month's snow followed by rain covering the mountains that feed into California and Nevada's water supply.

As of December 29, the snowpack in the central Sierra is at 154 percent of the average for this date, and 52 percent of the April 1 average. The snow water equivalent is 14.4 inches, the amount of water contained and collected should the snow melt. The state as a whole is close, with snowpack at 156 percent of the average for the date, and 51 percent of the April 1 average.

Weather forecast prompts cancelation of SnowTown Throw Down, fireworks still on

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lakeview Social of South Lake Tahoe planned a two-day end-of-the-year outdoor event, SnowTown Throw Down. Due to the forecasted wet weather for both days, organizers have had to cancel.

At this time, everything is still planned for Heavenly Village but wind and weather could impact their events. If they are able to safely operate, organizers said it's still "a go."

Christmas Cheer and Sierra-at-Tahoe staff helped by generosity from locals and Reno Toy Run

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past 25 years, hundreds of Northern Nevada families have had a special Christmas thanks to the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs (COC) Toy Run.

The Reno Toy Run raised over $100,000 in 2022 and organizers were able to give $4.000 to Christmas Cheer, the only California-based group to receive a check. The Brotherhood Motorcycle Club is a COC member and presented the check to Christmas Cheer in South Lake Tahoe. Christmas Cheer had fourteen volunteers on-site daily to help take care of local families.

The big snowstorm that hit Lake Tahoe than began with rain on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, turned into classic Sierra Cement by nightfall. Local Bob Buehler took this photo and created a video that can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/784691631.

The storm didn't snow there and another few feet continued to fall on top. Then the temperatures dropped into the teens for several days causing everything to freeze up and turn into ice.

Nevada gaming: South Shore Lake Tahoe win up 8%, statewide down over 7%

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,220,869,734 for the month of November 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released today. This amounts to a 7.62 percent decrease compared to November 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,321,592,551. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022), the gaming win has barely increased, up by .76 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Combating fentanyl overdoses in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado and Placer counties

Douglas County asks residents to prepare for potential flooding

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - County officials are informing residents to prepare for flooding due to storms moving through the region this Friday through Sunday. A Flood Watch is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Western Nevada from Friday morning through Saturday evening. Douglas County residents could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane, and Genoa Lane. Residents are encouraged to check the Douglas County website and social media channels for updates on flooding and road closures.

A wet end to 2022 in South Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, flood and storm warnings in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is another warm atmospheric river heading to the Sierra beginning Friday. At this time, temperatures are too warm for heavy snow levels except for locations above 7000 feet. Those hoping for more snow just have to wait a few days as the first week of 2023 should see lower temperatures and snow, especially January 4-5.
