GBI receives grant funding for Crystal Basin Ecological Restoration Project

Located within the Eldorado National Forest, north of Highway 50, this initiative spans 85,000 acres and aims to reduce wildfire risks, improve forest health, and safeguard critical resources. In collaboration with the Healthy Eldorado Landscape Partnership (HELP), GBI will implement proven forest resilience practices to ensure long-term ecological health and fire risk reduction.

Review: Stunning soloists bring the house down at Messiah performance

I'm delighted to write a review on this past Sunday's performance of Messiah by the newly formed Tahoe-Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus, conducted by James Rawie. This was the 19th year that Messiah has been performed in South Lake Tahoe. 132 people attended this performance at Mountain House Church, a new beautiful, and warm venue. James' lovely wife Nancy always opens their shows with a welcoming smile and some interesting background information that puts the audience at ease.
DCSO releases names of those involved in what investigators say was murder-attempted suicide
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/17/2024 - 2:18pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified the two individuals involved in the shooting on Dennis Street on Monday. They have been identified as Kathy Jean Weiland, 63, and Gregory Raymond Ward, 63.
Weiland was pronounced dead at the scene and Ward is being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. This is an active homicide investigation.
DCSO investigators say it appears that Ward shot Weiland and then shot himself attempting to commit suicide.

The toys are part of the CHIPS for Kids program where CHP collects toys during the holidays to distribute to organizations that help children and families.
Case closed against Lake Tahoe businessman as allegations dropped

On August 9, 2024, a former employee and person he says he tried to help filed a civil case against Reder, his company, and some members of his staff. That person, known in court as "John Doe," alleged Reder sex trafficked him as a minor and used his financial position to exploit the individual years into adulthood in incidents between 2012-2016.
Tahoe Conservancy awards $601,700 to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District

If conditions improve, the Carson City Fire Department, North Lake Tahoe, North Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, and the California Tahoe Conservancy will continue burning piles through Friday, Dec. 20, 2024. Smoke will be present. Then, prescribed burning may pause during the holidays and resume in January 2025.

Things started quiet in the first period, with neither team able to sustain an offensive foothold in the first ten minutes of play. But that all changed in the next four minutes, as Sloan Stanick, Simon Pinard, and Jett Jones all scored in quick succession to make it 3-0.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Monday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/15/2024 - 10:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area including Truckee, Markleeville, Tahoe City, and South Lake Tahoe. The advisory is for Monday, December 16 from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Expect wet snow with snow accumulations up to 6 inches west of SR 89 with up to an inch at lake level. Ridge winds gusting as high as 80 mph. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph with wave heights between 1 and 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.
After the quick storm leaves, highs will get into the 50s by Wednesday.

Kathi Jensen took the oath of office as a returning trustee for Area 5.
Librach will represent Area 1, which includes portions of Buckeye, Latrobe, El Dorado Union High, and Rescue.
“I am very much looking forward to giving back to my community and working with parents, students, and faculty to maintain our high-quality schools and learning environments,” said Librach.
Six "fake electors" charged again with a felony in Nevada

Ford announced this week that the Office of the Attorney General has filed charges in the Carson City Justice Court related to the 2020 “fake electors” case. The six Nevadans who falsely represented themselves as presidential electors in the aftermath of the 2020 election have been charged with Uttering a Forged Instrument, a category D felony.
The six "fake electors" had attempted to award Nevada’s six electoral college votes to former President Donald Trump despite his clear loss to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.
David "Jake" Burns ~ 1948 - 2024

Jake was born December 26, 1948, on the island of Guam. As the oldest of seven siblings in a Marine Corps family, he moved to Virginia, Ohio, and San Diego before settling in Orange, California. He graduated from Villa Park High School and went on to college at UC Riverside and later Loyola Law School.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has canceled its second night of the Festival of Lights due to inclement weather tonight, but the Lake Tahoe Historical Society is going forward with its holiday celebration on Saturday, December 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Santa Claus will be at the historic Osgood Toll House, a great place to share wish lists and take photos. The decorated log cabin and museum are open for free tours.
Enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies, and grab some mistletoe from the Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra club!

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club donated funds that allowed us to purchase five new Singer sewing machines as well as some important accessories for the machines to help us be creative. The Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra created sewing kits with all of the necessary sewing supplies that our members would need to sew a project.

CHP-South Lake Tahoe releases names of victims in fatal crash on Thanksgiving
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/13/2024 - 10:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 50-year-old woman from Fremont, Calif., and an 84-year-old man from Yerington, Nev. have been identified as the two people who died in a head-on collision on November 28 on Echo Summit.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the collision between a westbound Toyota Sequoia and an eastbound Chevrolet Traverse.
The Toyota and Chevrolet collided head-on in the eastbound lane for unknown reasons.
Winter Storm Warning issued for Lake Tahoe

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/12/2024 - 4:14pmThe Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) recently coordinated a "Give Back" event hosted by Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe, and once again the South Shore sales community and area businesses gave generously to benefit Christmas Cheer All Year.
The Golden Nugget and its staff contributed a large variety of items including toys and food items, and Bally’s Lake Tahoe donated cases of toiletries, games, toys, food, and other special items. The Powderhouse and Cascade Clothing kindly donated an array of toys and plush animals, while Clearly Tahoe gave unique items from their gift shop.
Ambassador Lodge completes room renovation project

Constructed in 1965, Ambassador Lodge is one of the oldest and most well-designed lodges in the tourist zone of South Lake Tahoe and is conveniently located within walking distance of many South Tahoe attractions including Heavenly Ski Resort, Tahoe Blue Event Center, Edgewood Golf Course, four major casinos, shopping and dining experiences, and more.
US50 over Echo closed after crash Thursday, should be reopened before 4 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A head-on collision on US50 over Echo Summit closed the highway for about an hour Thursday.
At 2:47 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to the crash and closed the highway until the damaged cars could be removed and cars could travel safely in the area.
At this time no other information is available.
The road is estimated to reopen around 3:45 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe CHP report: Two teens doing "donuts" in road end up in 3-car collision
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/12/2024 - 10:51amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two 16-year-old boys learned a tough lesson on December 7 after doing "donuts" in the roadway in Christmas Valley. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe, the teens were doing the donuts on Santa Claus Drive at Reindeer Way. At this time, it appears the two BMW 5 series vehicles ran into each other and a third car parked near the forest on Reindeer.
The CHP investigation is not final at this time, but both teens will be charged with reckless driving.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Tahoe Search and Rescue Incident Support Team seeks volunteers

His hiring has been a major point of division not only between school board members but for members of the community as well.
The two newly elected trustees, Erinn Miller and Melinda Gneiting, who are set to take their seats in January, ran on platforms against the hiring of Joey Gilbert among other items.

I’ve been following along with the letters published in the news and there has been a lot of misinformation about why the hospital is moving to Stateline. I wanted to give you my perspective as a physician and leader within the organization.

Prescribed fire operations near Lake Tahoe Airport Wednesday and Thursday

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, in conjunction with Lake Valley Fire Protection District and Cal Fire, is pile burning on ten acres around the airport. The burning caused some concern from residents who saw the flames and smoke in Johnson Meadow.
The ignition was December 11 with the first five acres, and the operation with smoke will go into Thursday when another five acres are burned.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/11/2024 - 9:49amOn Monday, December 2, a filling and ‘down home’ meal was served that eliminated any feelings of hunger that the dinner guests might have had when they arrived at St. Theresa Grace Hall that evening. As the 123 dinner guests moved down the serving line, they had a wide selection of toppings to finish off their fully loaded baked potatoes that were smothered in chili – sour cream, green onions, cheddar cheese, salsa, bacon, to name a few. The meal was finished with a green salad with almonds, mandarin oranges, rolls, and a wide selection of delicious desserts.
Tahoe Knight Monsters greeted by first hometown airport arrival

Fresh off a dominating win against the Tulsa Oilers this weekend, the team was celebrated by the airport, media, and fans alike.
The team's mascot Tessie also joined in the welcome home arrival party. It was a historic moment, the first time they arrived as a group after a road trip.

Keith Roberts and David Jinkens won their seats in the November election and were sworn in. They join current council members Cody Bass, Tamara Wallace, and Scott Robbins.
Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/10/2024 - 7:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area which includes South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Stateline, Markleeville, Glenbrook, and Incline Village.
The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Thursday.
