After rain, heavy snow expected through Thursday in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe will be experiencing rain through Sunday, but forecasters say it will be replaced by snow later this evening.

The very dynamic and strong system passing over the Sierra also created some lightning and thunder overnight and on Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno told South Tahoe Now that it is very common with a strong storm like this to see lightening.

During a storm briefing Sunday, NWS said there will be fluctuations in river forecast peaks and durations but there is still a significant flood threat in the Sierra, Sacramento and Western Nevada. "Plan for rough Monday morning commute with road closures, flooding and snow," they said. There are also avalanche hazards in

mountains with an extreme threat through at least 7:00 a.m. Monday.

The flood warning will be replaced with a Winter Storm Warning which will be in place from 4:00 a.m. Monday to 4:00 a.m. Thursday. Heaviest snow will be through Wednesday night. NWS is predicting accumulations of four to eight feet of snow above 7,000 feet with one to three feet of snow at Lake Level.

Winds will also be associated with the next wave of storm at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. The ridge tops could see gusts over 100 mph.
