Submitted by Editor on Tue, 01/22/2013 - 4:11pm
Event Date:
January 26, 2013 - 10:00am
A dedication ceremony of the new Genoa Vista Trail will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at at the north end of the trail on Foothill Road across from Carson Street. The event is open to the public and participants are encouraged to walk or bike the 1.3 mile trail to 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort and Spa where refreshments will be served.
Entertainment will be provided by Doug Lubushkin in the Walley’s Gazebo. There will be a Discover the Trail activity with interpretive stations on the trail. The trail activity will include prizes given at the reception in the Gazebo. Parking for the event is on Nixon Street or Mormon Station in Genoa or at Walley’s. Shuttle service at Walley’s will be available to return participants to the town.
Construction of the trail is part of the Genoa Destination Project, one of 12 Douglas County Economic Vitality projects that strive to create a community to match the scenery. The trail, which parallels ranchlands, a conservation area and wetlands, provides visitors a variety of recreational activities including biking, walking, and bird watching, as well as links to shopping, dining, picnicking, and sightseeing in the Town of Genoa.
“I believe the trail is one additional reason for visitors to come to Genoa. Once there, they have the opportunity to discover the rest of the Carson Valley,” said Greg Lynn, Redevelopment Agency Chairman. Cost of the $750,000 project was funded by the Douglas County Redevelopment Agency with a $100,000 grant from Nevada State Lands, Question 1 Program, through The Nature Conservancy.
The trail, which encompasses property owned by 1862 Walley’s Hot Springs Resort and Spa, The Nature Conservancy, United States Forest Service, Nevada Division of Transportation, and Ranch No. 1, was a high priority on the Town of Genoa’s strategic plan for a number of years before being incorporated into the Genoa Destination Project. Project approval was given in April of 2011. After obtaining easements from the various properties along the trail’s span, construction began in September 2012. The second part of the Genoa Destination Project, the Main Street Enhancement, is slated for consideration of bid award in early February.
