South Lake Tahoe man dies after high-speed crash in Dayton

A 28-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe died Friday ater a single-vehicle crash on Highway 50 in Dayton, Nev.

On February 1, 2019, at approximately 4:20 a.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to the report of a serious injury crash on the highway near the intersection of Fortune Drive.

Upon arrival they found two men ejected from a 2000 Audi S4 sedan. The driver, Juan Jesus Orozco of South Lake Tahoe, had succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger in the car, an unidentified male, was transported via CareFlight to Renown Hospital in Reno with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition at this time.

NHP's preliminary investigation shows that the Audi was traveling westbound on US-50 at a high rate of speed when he lost control and drove onto the raised concrete center median, striking a reflective sign and several marker posts. The Audi rotated and slid broadside across both westbound travel lanes. The vehicle struck a crash attenuator and subsequently struck a utility pole on the outside shoulder. The impact caused the rear portion of the Audi to become wrapped around the utility pole and the front portion to separate, which came to rest on the outside shoulder facing east. Both occupants of the vehicle were ejected from the vehicle upon impact.

Impairment is suspected in this crash.

NHP is seeking additional witnesses to this crash.
