South Tahoe High wrestler is tops in state for second straight year

During all four years at South Tahoe High School, Andrew Herrera has made it to the Nevada State Wrestling Championships, and Saturday night he capped it off with his second consecutive first place finish.

Wresting at 195 lbs, Herrera beat Brennan Reese of Spring Creek for the second straight week. They met last week at the 3A Northern League Wrestling Championships with the same results as February 11, a win by the South Tahoe High senior.

Reese's team went on to win the 3A state title over Churchill County. The South Tahoe team, led by coaches Sean Griffis, Ryan Wallace and assistant coach Robert Hook, took seventh in the 18 team field.

The other South Tahoe High wrestler at the state tournament was sophomore Jose Leon who was competing at the 170 lb level in his second state bid. Leon met Crescent Crandall of Virgin Valley in the title match at the tournament in Sparks. After 11 straight wins on the mat over the weekend, Leon lost to Crandall, giving Leon the honors of number two in the state.

During Herrera's career at STHS he brought home a fourth place his freshman year, third his sophomore year and a first place finish in both his junior, and now senior, year.
