SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been closed all afternoon due to snow slides across the highway. State Route 89 around Emerald Bay is also closed due to snow slides in that area as well.
Travelers may have been hoping for an April Fools Day joke when they saw the road closures signs go up on a day free of snow showers, but it wasn't.
US50 from Echo Summit to Chiapa Drive was closed to both eastbound and westbound traffic. One car was reported by the California Highway Patrol to be stuck in the slide but the driver was able to get out safely and there were no injuries.
The road reopened at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
SR89 remains closed as crews work on the snow covering the road. There has been no announcement of when it will reopen.
Both roads were closed for clearing and when safe travel could resume.
