Free showing of documentary at Lake Tahoe Community College

Event Date:
April 10, 2015 - 6:00pm

Students, parents, educators, and the entire South Shore community are invited to a free screening of the documentary film 'First Generation' at Lake Tahoe Community College’s Duke Theatre on Friday, April 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The film tells the stories of four California high school students who are trying to break out of the cycle of poverty they’re in by pursuing a college education.

LTCC’s TRiO-SSS program, which provides vital support services to first-generation students like those portrayed in the film, is sponsoring this free film screening. There will be a post-film discussion led by LTCC TRiO-SSS Coordinator Anna Lee about how local TRiO programs help low income, first-generation students avoid some of the pitfalls seen in the film.

Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, First Generation tells the story of four high school students in our state: an inner city athlete, a small town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers. All four are trying to create a new reality for themselves despite their backgrounds, bringing hope to their families and communities by pursuing higher education.

Shot over the course of three years and featuring some of the country’s top educational experts, the 95-minute documentary explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students, and how their success has major implications for the future of our state and nation.
