Featuring some of the biggest names in skiing and snowboarding, the inaugural Tahoe Backcountry Awareness Week will culminate with the Athlete Summit on Thursday, December 17. The free virtual event, designed to encourage those planning to venture into the backcountry to educate themselves before doing so, will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a live Q&A period with Michelle Parker, Jeremy Jones, Elyse Saugstad, Cody Townsend and Amie Engerbretson.

The winners of the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday, November 19 during an awards show shown on Lake Tahoe Television. In place of the annual awards dinner the community was invited to tune in virtually with hosts Chris Fiore from the City of South Lake Tahoe and Meg Peart from the Tahoe Resource Conservation District. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The safety of patients and healthcare workers is Barton Health’s top priority. The health care system has operations in place to continue to meet the demand for medical services as COVID-19 cases surge across the nation and Lake Tahoe. After preparation for the anticipated increase of patient volume this fall and winter, aspects of Barton’s plan are being implemented to meet the needs for patient care.

The community is invited to attend the Tahoe Chamber’s 13th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards to honor South Shore businesses and individuals that have impacted the community for the better. In place of the annual awards dinner, winners will be announced in an awards show that is pre-filmed and broadcast on Lake Tahoe Television on November 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Organizers of SnowGlobe, the annual music festival held in South Lake Tahoe, have canceled their 10th annual event due to safety concerns.

"2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenges and we wanted more than anything to be a bright spot in this otherwise bleak year - but after close consultation with local and state health officials regarding the impact of COVID-19, we've made the difficult decision to cancel this year's festival," said SnowGlobe on their Twitter announcement Wednesday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new Forestry Education and Job Placement program is heading to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) in South Lake Tahoe.

To get things started, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded the college a $351,000 grant and $480,000 was received from CAL Fire’s Forest Health Grant Program. LTCC has hired Kim Carr as their contracted consultant on the project and she helped write the grants and secure funding for the new avenue of education in South Lake Tahoe. She is bringing 30 years of forestry and environmental experience to the college.

The Tahoe Chamber collected 190 nominations from the community for the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Award to celebrate the businesses, non-profits and individuals that make the South Shore of Lake Tahoe so unique. Local businesses have been a resilient backbone of the community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and honoring their contributions, achievements and milestones is more important than ever before.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Student Senate at Lake Tahoe Community College is hosting a City Council Virtual Candidate Forum on Monday Oct. 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

All are welcome to join.

As of right now, all but two of the candidates have agreed to participate. They’ll share their visions for the community and their thoughts about Measure S.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College offers noncredit citizenship classes along with English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Equivalency (HSE) courses. Even though registration is wrapping up, the flexibility of these noncredit classes allows students to still get started.

As part of the course, they assist students in filling out forms, provide practice interviews and assist with learning English. While the class is in English, assistance is provided for students in Spanish and other languages, if needed. This quarter, the classes are via live Zoom.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emergency crews responded to the Trout Creek meadow behind Lake Tahoe Community College on Saturday at about 2:00 p.m. after receiving a call about a homeless man starting a fire.

When officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrived they located the fire and extinguished it with water from the river, according to Lt. Travis Cabral.

At the fire was 36-year-old Dustin Travis Myers, a homeless man who Cabral said tried to dissuade them from filing charges.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council after the November 3 election. In the coming weeks the pubic will have chances to hear from the candidates both via zoom, in print and possibly in person. EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Results from COVID-19 testing at the two state-sponsored, free sites in South Lake Tahoe and Placerville are currently expected to come back in 2-5 days. These tests are available for any El Dorado County, Alpine County, or State of Nevada resident wanting to be tested for the virus.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are several candidates who turned in their paperwork to run for office by the August 7 deadline, but with no incumbents running for South Lake Tahoe City Council, the deadline for that office is extended through August 12.

Please join Make Tahoe Records at Scott Forrest Fine Art Studio for The Art and Music of Yvonne McGrath in the premiere of “Sound and Vision”, a series of introductions to the work of visual artists and the reciprocal connections of music and their art. In the spirit of reciprocity, a portion of the proceeds from sales of Yvonne McGrath’s work and vinyl from the Make Tahoe Records pop-up exhibit will be donated to the Tahoe Art League as part of the “Saturday Show of Support” series.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently held ceremonies for the hiring of three new firefighter/paramedics and the promotion of three to the rank of captain. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, ceremonies were small and held at the fire station during their shifts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 in our community, the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation is hosting its annual Taste of Gold fundraiser as a virtual event this year through July 18. Funds raised from this event support the Lake Tahoe College Promise program that provides up to three years of tuition-free college for eligible students of all ages, a free textbook lending library, and the Lake Tahoe Community College Food Pantry, which provides crucial nutrition and personal hygiene products to LTCC’s neediest students.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There will be some very big shoes to fill when finding a replacement for retiring El Dorado County Undersheriff Randy Peshon. On Tuesday, June 30, Peshon will be putting his badge on for the very last time. For 43 years he's been in some level of law enforcement, the last 33 years in El Dorado County.

During his career in El Dorado County, Peshon has been at the forefront of change from implementing a change in culture at the jail in South Lake Tahoe to getting the new Public Safety Facility built under budget and ahead of schedule.

With its decision last week, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a real sense of relief and a bit of a reprieve to approximately 800,000 DREAMers in America, including 200,000 in California alone. When the justices sided with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, ruling that the way the Trump administration rescinded the program in 2017 was unlawful, it was a big victory for immigrant communities and their many allies.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced 15 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, bringing the total to 145.

The new cases are nine males, six females, seven ages 18-49, five in the 50-65 age group, and three 65 and older.

There were nine new cases in the Lake Tahoe region, three in Greater Placerville, two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs, and one in El Dorado Hills. Since the local casinos opened on June 4 there have been 48 new cases of the coronavirus in the Lake Tahoe region of El Dorado County.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say there were five new confirmed cases in the county Friday, four from the Lake Tahoe region, one from the Greater Placerville area. Of the three females and one male, one was under 18, one between 18-49, and three in the 50-64 age group.

There were no new recoveries leaving 30 active cases. There are no hospitalizations but there are three patients in the ICU with suspected COVID-19.
