Rescue and law enforcement crews keeping busy over holiday weekend

10:30 p.m. Sunday: Updated story below:

It has been a busy holiday weekend for the South Lake Tahoe fire and police departments.

On Sunday afternoon, a 22-year-old woman from the Bay Area visiting Tahoe with a large group of friends, was enjoy a dip in the lake next to a boat that was turned off near Lighthouse Shores. As she was getting back onto the boat her leg was sliced to the bone by the propeller. The SLTPD Marine boat responded and officers were able to begin initial care and attempt to get bleeding to stop. SLTFR and Cal Tahoe JPA met them at the shore and she was transported Code 3 to Barton. Initially a helicopter was called to transport but they were called off.

Shortly after that a 10-year-old boy was hit by a car while he was racing his bike at the intersection of Martin and Fountain Avenues. He was transported to Barton with injuries including a broken arm and facial injuries.

Late Saturday afternoon there was a two-car collision on Highway 50 between the Raley's Center and Applebee's. One of the cars ended up on its side. The drivers were the only occupants in each car and one of them was transported to Barton. SLTPD dispatcher Jill Broadfoot happened to be the first person on the scene and she was able to control bleeding and call 911.

The holiday weekend started off with a crash between a motorcycle and vehicle.

SLTFR and SLTPD responded Friday night to a motorcycle down on Highway 50 in front of Safeway. The biker collided with a car, sending the motorcyclist to Barton Hospital.

One unusual public service call for SLT Fire Rescue was on Saturday. The crew from Engine 1, some out-of-town visitors and SLT parks maintenance employee Dennis Churchill all assisted with reuniting eight ducklings who had fallen into a storm drain. The mama was waiting near by for assistance, and she received it from the willing group. The family of ducks walked away very happy.

A dumpster caught on fire Saturday after someone dumped hot charcoal into the trash. The fire was contained to the dumpster.

There have also been minor traffic collisions, drunk driving vehicles and boat arrests.
