Lake Tahoe Humane Society to sell building, but keeps organization going in South Lake Tahoe

The new board of directors for the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS) has decided to put their building on Emerald Bay Road up for sale.

"After assessing our financial situation from many angles, we determined that selling the building was the best option to: (1) Stabilize the organization; (2) Immediately compensate, in full, the local veterinarians and the other businesses that we owe; (3) And to restore some of the most valued programs to the community," said Board President Michael Dalton. β€œThe sale of the property will allow the organization to get back to basics – serving the community.”

Local commercial realtor Scott Fair of NAI Tahoe Sierra will be handling the sale. It will be listed at $399,000.

The organization has been trying to regroup after their former director allegedly embezzled funds over a year ago. Since then a small board of volunteers tried to keep things together, but gave over the reigns to a new board earlier this year. They held a garage sale last weekend and have cleaned up the property with the help of volunteers, partners, and supporters.

They will remain at the building on Emerald Bay Road until it is sold.

"We may be de-centralized for a bit, but home for us is where our hearts are – we welcome your help as we knit together our new purpose," said the LTHS.

The new board has implemented strict controls, including criminal background checks on all board members to help the community regain confidence in the organization. They include President, Michael Dalton; VP, Compliance & Governance, Sandra DeLeon, VP, Operations, Chantale Hansen, Treasurer, Elizabeth Naylor, and
Secretary, Mariel Berei.

LTHS will also be working with the SLT Fire Department on keeping their emergency animal evacuation program.
