Lake Tahoe’s only women’s flat track roller derby team, Tahoe Derby Dames, hosted the Port City Roller Girls from Stockton, Calif., on Saturday, June 16 at Bijou Community Park to a roaring crowd of old and new fans. TDD hosted a double header with Port City playing each other’s A and B teams.
The first bout included a mix of intermediate and fresh meat skaters from both teams. Bunny Darko, TDD’s captain for the B team, stated, “The green team played their hearts out. Great team work and determination won the game. For many of the girls it was their first bouting experience yet they played as pros. It would be impossible to pinpoint just one skater as MVP because it took the entire team to win the game. Keep an eye out for these up and coming skaters this season.”
Cryma Passion of TDD’s B team was the star jammer for this bout by helping the team push for a victory with a final score of 115 to 87 for the B team. MVP recognition for TDD’s B team went to TuTu Tootsie; her first bout so expect many great things from this skater. Bunny Darko was voted best blocker.
Coach Jack Hammer was full of energy coaching both teams that day and stated, “What a way to open up the home bouting season! The B team exceeded my expectations. They played smart, physical derby.
I am thrilled with their dedication and passion for the game!”
The TDD veteran skaters were up against Port City’s A team. The main event was action packed with a lot of hard hits, speed, and penalties. As Coach Jack Hammers puts it, “The TDD A team continues to grow and move forward. Their determination to finish this last bout was so inspiring! I really thought we came together in the second half. We outscored Port City by 40 points! Such an incredible group of skaters!” TDD came back with a strong second half but not quite enough to keep Port City from winning. The final score was Port City 159 TDD 113.
TDD has grown to over forty skilled skaters, and will be hosting double headers this summer, billing the season as “Double the Trouble: Live Roller Derby Action”. Come out and cheer for the Tahoe Derby Dames at their next home bout on July 21st. See you at the track! Go here for the Tahoe Derby Dames website and here for the Facebook page.
