The California Tahoe Conservancy announced today that construction of the first phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail will begin on Monday, July 6, 2015. The new bike and pedestrian trail extends about a half of a mile between Herbert Avenue and Glenwood Way and is scheduled to be completed by August.
“The beginning of construction for this first phase of the Greenway marks a significant milestone in the effort to improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity in our community,” said Tom Davis of the City Council and a member of the Conservancy’s Board. “When complete, the Greenway will create the backbone of the bicycle and pedestrian network in South Lake Tahoe by linking residents and visitors to recreation, transit, lodging, and shopping destinations.”
The Conservancy Board and partner agencies approved the entire 3.86 mile project in September, 2011, linking Sierra Tract to Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The Conservancy is seeking funding for the next phase of the Greenway across Bijou Meadow and to Sierra Tract through a partnership with Lake Tahoe Community College, the City of South Lake Tahoe, and the Tahoe Transportation District.
