Hal Cole not running for 6th term: Filing deadline extended for City Council candidates

Former Mayor and current City Councilman Hal Cole will not be running for a sixth term this November, so the filing period for candidates has been extended by five days.

This Friday, August 12 was the original deadline, but that was only in the case of an incumbent running for their current seat. JoAnn Conner has filed papers to run for re-election, but Cole has decided to hand off the hand to a new Council member.

The deadline to turn in paperwork has been extended to Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

All interested persons must be a registered voter and reside within the City of South Lake Tahoe at the time nomination papers are issued.

Contact City Clerk Susan Alessi at (530) 542-6004 or email salessi@cityofslt.us to schedule an appointment for issuance of nominations papers before the August 17, 2016 deadline.

City Councilmembers receive a monthly compensation in the amount of $946. Councilmembers and dependents are also eligible for City medical/dental benefits and are enrolled in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

The City of South Lake Tahoe does not have a filing fee. However, there is a charge for candidates who wish to file and have printed a Candidate Statement in the sample ballot. If a candidate chooses to submit a Candidate Statement for printing in the sample ballot, a fee of $350 for English and/or $446 for Spanish is required by the El Dorado County Elections Department.

Nomination papers can be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office located at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe, California. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please contact the City Clerk at (530) 542-6004 to schedule an appointment for filing.

The oath of office to newly elected Councilmembers will be administered at the Tuesday, December 13, 2016 City Council meeting.
