Clearer picture now for November's elections in South Lake Tahoe

Deadlines for candidates interested in sitting on four local boards and councils have come and gone for most of the contests, so there is now a much clearer picture on the November elections.

There are now ten people interested in sitting on the South Lake Tahoe City Council. With a deadline of 5:00 p.m. on August 17, the last of the candidates submitted their paperwork just under the wire.

The ballot will see three current or former council members. Brooke Laine and Ted Long have both jumped back into the election scene as has incumbent JoAnn Conner. New comers to local politics Danny McLaughlin, Patrick Jarrett, Jason Collin, Tamara Wallace, John Shearer, Trey Riddle and Robert Topel are also running to represent the community.

Over at South Tahoe Public Utility District, four candidates have successfully filed for the election. Both incumbents, Randy Vogelgesang and Kelly Sheehan, are running for reelection. They will be joined on the ballot by local business owner Kirk David and land use planner Nick Exline.

Three seats are open for the Lake Tahoe Board of Education. The following are those who have filed so far, but there are still two days (until Friday) for candidates to turn in their filing papers.

Trustee Area 1 candidates are Larry Reilly and Anne Davidson. Adam Jones, who was appointed to the Board in March 2015 following the resignation of Sue Novasel, is not running as of today.

Trustee Area 3 candidates are incumbent Dr. Michael Doyle and Donnie Turnbull. Doyle has served since 2007.

Trustee Area 4 candidate is Troy Matthews, who is running unopposed. Incumbent, Dr. Larry Green who has also been on the Board since 2007, has said he is not running for reelection.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Board will also be seeing a new face. Incumbent Karen Borges, the current Trustee for Area 3 is the only candidate for her seat. With the retirement of long time Trustee, and current Board President Dr. Frederick Wenck, Jr., two candidates have filed to fill his seat, David Hamilton and Nancy Dalton.

The election for all spots will be held during November's election on November 8, 2016.

City Councilmembers receive a monthly compensation in the amount of $946. Councilmembers and dependents are also eligible for City medical/dental benefits and are enrolled in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

The oath of office to newly elected Councilmembers will be administered at the Tuesday, December 13, 2016 City Council meeting.
