September 1, 2012 (All day)
Through September, South Lake Tahoe Branch Library will celebrate the California Reads Searching for Democracy project. The county-wide library effort will emphasize the book selections: Farewell to Manzanar, It Can't Happen Here and The Penguin Guide to the U.S. Constitution to encourage meaningful discussions about democracy.
The library will distribute free copies of the Pocket Constitution produced by the National Center for Constitutional Studies. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the library will show the movie The Hunger Games, which considers the increasing popularity of dystopian depictions in adult and youth fiction.
Leading up to the November election, the Friends of the Library group will hold a voter registration drive. Voting is a key element of democracies, allowing people to voice their opinion and be represented in government. The library asked residents to join in the program that explore the meaning of democracy in community and country.
