Storm systems line up through next week for Lake Tahoe and Sierra

A weather system is moving into northern California and will continue to push into the Lake Tahoe Basin, Sierra and western Nevada by Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Larger systems are on tap through at least Tuesday.

Accumulations Saturday will be fairly light with 1 to 3 inches in the Sierra, 1 to 2 inches in northeast California and western Nevada above 5,000 feet and up to an inch on valley floors.

Periods of light snow may continue through Sunday. A stronger system will move into the west Monday into Tuesday, with snow levels rising to around 5,500 feet Monday before crashing down to all valley floors Tuesday behind a strong cold front, according to the weather service.

Winds will be gusty Sunday afternoon through Monday night ahead of this cold front with valley gusts to 45 mph and ridge gusts to 90 mph. Five to 10 inches of snow is possible in the Sierra above 7,000 feet, with several inches possible above 5,500 feet.

Up to two inches is possible on valley floors behind the cold front on Tuesday. Several periods of snow will continue to bring travel impacts to the region today through Tuesday. Please check with the Nevada Department of Transportation and Caltrans for the latest on road conditions.
