Special meeting of Douglas County School Board set to interview and possibly hire new superintendent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. - Since Superintendent Terri White announced her retirement at the end of February, the Douglas County School Board has been searching for her replacement.

On Monday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m., the board will hold a special meeting to interview three candidates via ZOOM and the public is invited to watch and participate. According to their agenda, a new superintendent could be chosen and announced by the end of the meeting.

Virtual Town Hall debate for Douglas County commission candidates

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - There will be a virtual town hall debate on Monday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. for the six candidates vying for the open three positions. Voters will have an opportunity to hear the candidates discuss the issues in depth prior to voting in the June primary.

Four-week acting online workshop starts in May in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A four-week on-line acting workshop will be starting on May 11, 2020. Take 2 Performers Studio and Tahoe Production House have teamed up to bring this workshop to youth with a focus on television and film acting.

This is an interactive class where students will develop a solid foundation and acting techniques including improv, auditioning skills for film and television, and on-camera experience with instructors Justine Reyes and Holly Lorge.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra and El Dorado County roadwork May 3 - 9

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has resumed work on area highways. The following is their current project list at Lake Tahoe and in the Sierra.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities is presenting their fifth "Tip of the Week," an ongoing series for the public since they are unable to perform their normal community outreach services. All tips are ways people can prepare for wildfire while staying at home.

Three new cases of COVID-19 reported in El Dorado County; One in Douglas, 48 in Washoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since yesterday, the El Dorado County Public Health Department has reported three new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county told to 47.

Health officials say just one of those cases in actually new, and the other two were listed in the Sacramento County figures. Their identification showed a P.O. Box in Sacramento, but they actually live in El Dorado Hills. Both have since recovered.

Suspect arrested after leading law enforcement on chase in Nevada with stolen car

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The driver of a stolen Audi has been arrested after leading law enforcement on a chase from Carson City to Minden along US395.

On May 1, at 11:45 a.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) located a red Audi two-door vehicle stolen out of California and attempted to pull it over. The driver failed to stop and led CCSO on a chase into Douglas County.

They requested assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) who then took over the pursuit.

USFS beaches and sites around Lake Tahoe to remain closed through May 15

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A temporary closure order for USFS beaches and recreation sites around Lake Tahoe has been extended through at least May 15, 2020. The original order was set to expire May 1. To keep in alignment with current federal, state, and local guidance for social distancing, and to ensure the health and safety of its employees, visitors, and volunteers, it was extended.

Trailheads and trails outside of the orange areas of the attached maps, or the ones on the closure website, are not affected by this order but parking lots are closed.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe and surrounding counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The numbers stayed the same in El Dorado County Thursday in El Dorado County. No new cases and no new recoveries. There are still 44 total cases, 40 recoveries, and four active cases.

The County tested 90 more people, bringing the total to 2,140 tests.

Fifteen in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

El Dorado County extends ban of all nonessential travel to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The current order restricting travel into the Lake Tahoe Basin has been extended by the El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams.

Originally set to expire on April 30, the ban's extension begins at 12:01 a.m. May 1.

The ban is for all nonessential travel into the El Dorado County portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin from outside the basin. Dr. Williams will review the current situation with local health care professionals at least every 14 days.

Lake Tahoe snowpack measures 3% of average for May 1; Statewide stations at 37% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The fifth and final snow measurement of the year at Phillips Station took place Thursday, and results were very slim. The team from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured 1.5 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 0.5 inches which is three percent of average for May 1.

The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack, providing a more accurate forecast of spring runoff than snow depth alone.

Douglas County commissioners and residents deliver letter to Sisolak asking for phased reopening

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting on April 29, 2020, regarding recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local businesses in the county. The Board decided unanimously to deliver a letter to Governor Sisolak in support of reopening Douglas County and hand-delivered the letter in unison with community members and the Sheriff's Office at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Dispute at Lake Tahoe construction site; One transported via Cal Star, other by ambulance

5.1.20 UPDATE: In the morning hours of April 30, 2020, a group of construction workers were involved in a physical altercation at their job site at the new Tahoe Beach Club at the end of Kahle Drive. During the physical fight, a knife was produced and one male sustained major knife inflicted injuries to his head/face and he was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno via Cal Star.

Another male suffered minor non-life threatening injuries and he was transported to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - One more person has recovered from COVID-19 in El Dorado County, bringing the total number of cases to four. There were no new cases on Wednesday, with 44 total positive tests in the county. There were 50 more tests for the virus Wednesday, with 2,050 total tests issued with 2,006 negative or pending results.

Fifteen in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe and surrounding counties

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - One person in El Dorado County has tested positive for COVID-19 since Monday. The new case is a male from South County aged 50-64, bringing the total testing positive in the county to 44. He was the first South County resident to test positive.

The County tested 60 more people Tuesday, bringing the total of residents being tested to 2000.

One more person has recovered and there are five active cases.

Fifteen in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

Tahoe Chamber hosts virtual Town Hall for businesses navigated Cares Act

El Dorado County lifts orders but California stay-at-home orders still in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One layer of stay-at-home orders has been lifted for El Dorado County as its Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, has lifted her stay-at-home directive effective April 30, the original date it was to be lifted when set on March 19.

This doesn't mean that South Lake Tahoe and the county are open for business though as the State's order is still in effect.

"We are requesting from the Governor that we [South Lake Tahoe] can move towards reopening in a phased approach with attention paid to his six guidelines," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin.

South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda: Short-term economic recovery update and budget workshop

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will hold a budget workshop and har from their short-term economic recovery task force during their meeting on Tuesday, April 27 starting at 9:00 a.m.

The task force made up of two councilmembers and local leaders have identified the need for the following financial assistance in order to facilitate the immediate needs of our residents and businesses and to facilitate the re-opening of the city when that time comes.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Since Friday, one new person has tested positive for COVID-19, this time a Lake Tahoe area man in the 18-49 age group, bringing the total of people who have tested positive in El Dorado County to 43. Two hundred additional tests have been issued in El Dorado County.

One more person has recovered, leaving five active cases of COVID-19.

Fifteen in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

Community spirit surrounds South Lake Tahoe food giveaway

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second time in as many weeks, Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe gave away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to the first 500 people to come by the store.

This time, Overland owners Brian and Kim Cohen had other businesses join in the fun.

Grass Roots gave away $10 gift cards, Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. gave away spice samples, and Safeway at Bijou added two pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables to the mix.

"This is community effort at its finest," said Brian.

Douglas County holding special meeting to discuss recovery and economic impacts

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will be conducting a 1:00 p.m. special meeting on April 29, 2020, to discuss recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local businesses in Douglas County. The county is actively seeking public comment from residents in regard to economic impacts on local business in Douglas County.

South Lake Tahoe coach facing federal child pornography charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A search warrant served at a South Lake Tahoe home on April 15, 2020, has resulted in the arrest of a local 39-year-old snowboard and soccer coach on alleged child pornography charges.

Timothy Daniel Mackey was arrested without incident by the FBI and U.S. Marshals at his home during the search.

Roadwork schedule for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra for April 25-May 2

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) will work on projects through the Sierra, as weather permits this winter. There are no major projects going on in the Lake Tahoe Basin until the building season begins in May. The following is their weekly schedule:

Sue Novasel to hold virtual town hall meetings on VHR issues

New area county COVID-19 cases: Two in El Dorado, 19 in Washoe, 1 in Douglas

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Two more people tested positive for COVID-19 in El Dorado County on Friday. Both of the new cases are women in the 50-64 age group. One is from El Dorado Hills and the other from the Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area. There have also been two recoveries.

Since Thursday, 40 more tests have been administered. So far, 1,1740 tests for the virus have been given with 1,698 coming back as negative or results are still outstanding.

Humboldt-Toiyabe: No camping in Alpine County, updates on forest use during pandemic

At the request of Alpine County in California, all Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest lands within the boundaries of the county will be temporarily closed to overnight camping starting on Saturday, April 25, 2020.

“We recognize that this overnight camping restriction comes at a time when many are seeking respite in natural areas,” said Forest Supervisor Bill Dunkelberger. “However, this temporary closure is to support state, county, and local authorities in controlling COVID-19 pandemic.”

El Dorado County COVID-19: One new confirmed case in Lake Tahoe region

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - One Lake Tahoe area resident has tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the area's total up to 14 and the El Dorado County total up to 40.

Since Wednesday, 45 new tests for the virus have been administered, bringing the total tested to 1,700.

One more person has recovered and to date, 35 people have recovered.

The new case is a male in the 18-49 age group from the Lake Tahoe region. The Lake Tahoe region of the County includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

Quad Counties to offer asymptomatic community based COVID-19 testing

Approximately 1,800 residents in the Quad-County region who do not have any of the COVID-19 symptoms will be able to be tested for the virus starting May 4. The limited number of tests will be given by appointment only and those can be made starting Monday, April 27. About 150,000 people live in the Quad-County region so just over one-percent of residents without symptoms can get tested.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident donates protective gear to Barton medical staff

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The generosity of a former South Lake Tahoe resident is keeping nurses and other members of the medical team at Barton Health safer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brian Gignoux, who spent grades K-10 and early adult life in South Lake Tahoe, heard how medical personnel across the globe were having problems obtaining life-saving protection items like surgical and N95 masks. His medical field friends in South Lake Tahoe were no different.

He talked to Barton RNs Siobhan Keller and Rachelle Pakes, friends of his from childhood, and asked what they needed.

Sugar pine seedlings to be handed out to students at South Lake Tahoe elementary schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A team of volunteers will be handing out sugar pine seedlings to students at four South Lake Tahoe school sites on Friday, April 24.

The Sugar Pine Foundation has given a box of seedlings to Bijou Community School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School. The free seedlings will be given out when students pick up their meals between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. while supplies last.

At Tahoe Valley, TRex will be on hand to hand out the sugar pines, and at the Middle School, meet Hans the service dog.

No new confirmed COVID-19 cases in El Dorado County; Incline Village now at 18

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There were no new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County today, leaving the total at 39. The statistics also remained the same for recoveries (34). 1,655 people have been tested, 35 additional people and 1,616 tests have been returned as negative or results are pending.

The Lake Tahoe region of the County (Kyburz to South Lake Tahoe, Meyers to Tahoma) has 13 cases.

Earthquake swarm between Mammoth and Mono Lake nears 500

The area around Mammoth Mountain and Mono Lake has been a hotbed of seismological activity for thousands of years and the recent earthquake swarm is not an abnormal event.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe and surrounding counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County is reporting one new case of COVID-19. A woman in the 50-64-year-old age group from El Dorado Hills tested positive on Tuesday, April 21.

This brings the total number of cases in El Dorado County to 39. Three more people have recovered from the virus, bringing that total to 34. Thirty more people were tested for coronavirus today. To date, 1,620 people have been tested with 1,581 negative or pending.

The Lake Tahoe region of the County (Kyburz to South Lake Tahoe, Meyers to Tahoma) has 13 cases.

Full closure of US50 over Echo Summit planned for June

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work on US50 over Echo Summit to replace an 81-year-old bridge has resumed. The $14.1 million Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project will replace the bridge with a structure that meets current seismic and safety standards.

Travelers can expect daytime work with one-way reversing traffic now, with around-the-clock one-way traffic control from May 26 until May 31, then full closure from June 1 until about June 14.

Caltrans and its contractor expect work to be completed this year.

Two new cases of COVID-19 in Lake Tahoe region of El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County, both in the Lake Tahoe region which includes Meyers and South Lake Tahoe.

One male, one female in the 18-49-year-old range were confirmed over the weekend. Their ages dropped the median age of positive cases from the age of 49 to 47.

This brings the total positive tests in the county to 38.

The county reports 130 new tests administered, and no new recoveries. To date, 1,590 tests have been administered with 1,552 coming back as negative or are pending.

Reopening plans underway for South Lake Tahoe once given the state and county go ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In less than 90 days life has changed in South Lake Tahoe, California and the United States. The West caught up quickly to the novel coronavirus pandemic that was first contracted by a human in China on November 17, 2019.

Scientists and doctors pled for the public to stay home to keep the virus from spreading, and that plea worked better in some areas than others.

El Dorado County supervisors add $1,000 fine for vacation home rental use in Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to issue citations to anyone violating the ban on nonessential travel in the Lake Tahoe Basin as it pertains to the use of vacation home rentals (VHRs).

Anyone found using a VHR is subject to a $1,000 fine per day of violation.

Sugar Pine Foundation giving away seedlings to be planted around Lake Tahoe

4/20 Update: The response was huge this weekend and all of the seedlings the Sugar Pine Foundation had to give way were gone in the first day! They have 2,000 more to distribute on Saturday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. while supplies last, except at the Mountain Hardware location.

Fundraising campaign started to keep Emerald Bay Bar & Grill in business

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Times are tough for many during the coronavirus pandemic with small businesses struggling to make ends meet when unable to have their doors open.

One of those businesses is Emerald Bay Bar & Grill at 888 SR89 in South Lake Tahoe.

Formerly known at Brother's Place, owner Spencer Weiss and his family and friends have turned to GoFundMe as a way to get donations and save the business.

El Dorado County COVID-19: One new case; Recoveries up to 31

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There was one new reported case of COVID-19 in El Dorado County Friday, and it was the first one in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz area. This case is a man 65 or over.

On the positive side of things, two more people have recovered. There have been 36 reported cases with 31 recoveries.

Events Center approved by Douglas County Commissioners

STATELINE, Nev. - In what has been a hotly debated topic for months between the five Douglas County Board of Commissioners and members of the public, the Tahoe South Events Center passed the final hurdle Thursday. In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners approved bond issuance, the final step in the approval process. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) had previously unanimously approved it.
