LTCC bans tobacco except in designated areas
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/30/2014 - 9:12pmThe Board of Trustees, students, faculty and staff of Lake Tahoe Community College recognize the serious health problems associated with smoking tobacco and other non-tobacco products and the use of smokeless tobacco. The college also recognizes that tobacco smoke poses a health risk to non-smokers. In order to protect students and staff who choose not to smoke from an unhealthy environment, the LTCC Board of Trustees approved a new policy that prohibits smoking within buildings or facilities owned or leased by the District, and designates marked outside areas on campus for smoking.

Pollock Pines man arrested for starting King Fire; Bail set at $10,000,000
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/18/2014 - 7:27pmWayne Allen Huntsman, 37. was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of Arson on Forest land with a Special Allegation of Arson with Aggravating Factors. Law enforcement officials held a press conference Thursday at the Cal Fire base in Camino, announcing the arrest.
Huntsman is being held in lieu of $10 million bail.
Arraignment is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in Department 7 of the El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville.
Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 2:43pm9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.
After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
Douglas County Sheriffs looking for man who skipped drug court
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/12/2014 - 8:15pmA 19 year old man is being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. Seth Daniel Rogers is wanted for failing to appear in drug court and for a warrant for traffic offenses.
DCSO is asking for the public's help in locating Rogers. He is described as having green eyes, being 5'10" tall and weighing 155 lbs.

Lake Tahoe Holiday Crowds Keep Law Enforcement and Fire Departments Busy
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/07/2014 - 3:26pm"It's a challenge to make sure they are all safe," said Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall. He was commenting on the increased number of calls his department received on the the 4th of July when tens of thousands of visitors come to the Lake Tahoe basin to celebrate. When more people come to Lake Tahoe the fire department sees a large increase in service calls.
"Our rescue crews were kept busy," according to Guevin.
DUI Checkpoints in South Lake Tahoe on Friday and Saturday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/02/2014 - 7:51pmThe California Highway Patrol, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be joining forces over the holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe by conducting sobriety, car safety and driver's license checkpoints on both sides of the state line.
The California Highway Patrol will have their checkpoint in Meyers on Saturday, July 5 on U.S. Highway 50 between Pioneer Trail and State Route 89. It will be staffed by officers who are trained in the detection of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers.
Fire Investigators Say Arsonist Started Four Brush Fires Along Lake Tahoe Hiking Trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/30/2014 - 10:11pmLake Tahoe fire officials, the U.S. Forest Service and Douglas County authorities are investigating a number of intentionally set brush fires lit near four hiking trails in the Stateline and Zephyr Cove areas.
In the past two weeks, four separate small brush fires have been started off of hiking trails, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks. Because of the nature of the fires, they are believed to have been started by the same person or persons, Brooks added.
South Lake Tahoe Grow House Burglarized: Suspect Arrested and Officer Injured During Pursuit
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/04/2014 - 10:48amSouth Lake Tahoe Police officers responding to 911 calls about a male breaking into a Bonanza Avenue residence on Tuesday ended up in a pursuit of an armed suspect. He was arrested and one officer was injured.
When officers arrived at the residence they saw the suspected burglar and gave chase to the suspect, who was carrying bags of stolen items from the residence.
The chase took them through yards and over a fence to a meadow near D Street and Highway 50. The suspect then attempted to pull a gun from his waistband but lost control of the 9 mm semiautomatic weapon.

South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/22/2014 - 9:32pmThe facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.
Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.
The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:
39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.
Douglas County Sheriffs Arrest Reno Man Suspected in Theft of Solar Energy Panels and Supplies
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/21/2014 - 3:36pmDouglas County Sheriff's Investigators have spent the last several months investigating the thefts of solar energy equipment around the region. On Tuesday they arrested 40 year-old Geoffrey Earl Meudt of Reno (a former Douglas County resident) for possession of stolen property, which is a felony charge.
Between November of 2013 and April of 2014 there were five separate thefts of solar panels and associated solar system components in Douglas County.
The equipment was sold by Meudt to unsuspecting buyers who thought the items were the result of a solar energy upgrade project in Reno.
North Lake Tahoe Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested After Pursuit in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/16/2014 - 10:18pmAn armed man walked into the Kings Beach branch of the Plumas Bank Friday morning, demanding money of two clerks. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect, identified as 55 year old Brent Muir of Carson City, was sighted near Sand Harbor by FBI agents responding to the robbery from South Lake Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe Secret Witness Offers Reward For Simpson's Jewelry Robbery

Detectives discovered a stolen Ford truck had been used in the crime. The stolen Ford has since been recovered locally.
In partnership with Lake Tahoe Secret Witness, a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in this case.
Man Arrested For Stalking Douglas High Student; Sheriff's Office Looking Into More Cases

A school official observed 59 year old Rodney Minton Skan watching participants at the school event, became suspicious and reported him to a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy who was at the meet.
The deputy began watching Skan and noticed he was watching and videotaping a specific student. As soon as Skan realized he was being watched, he attempted to leave the area.
Placerville Man Arrested in Sexual Predator Case

On Monday, April 14th, the boy reported to the Sheriff’s Office in Placerville that he had received sexually suggestive and descriptive text messages from an unknown 26 year old male, who identified himself as Glenn Coco. The text messages described the man's sexual desires for the 15 year old.

Four Arrested in South Lake Tahoe For Buying Alcohol For Minors

On March 15, 2014, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrested Stevie Smith, a 23 year old from Pasadena, Harvey Hampton, a 58 year old from South Lake Tahoe, Charles Kerr, a 72 year old from South Lake Tahoe and Hamza Salmi, a 32 year old from San Francisco. As of 10 p.m. Friday, 522 people had been arrested statewide during the largest decoy operation in California's history.

Zephyr Cove Resident Arrested for Murder of Her Husband

On Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 11:00 am, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to 452 Kent Way, Zephyr Cove, NV for a report of a male who had shot himself.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene and met with Tatiana Leibel who stated her husband, 64 year old Harry Leibel had shot himself. Tatiana stated she and Harry were the only people in or at the house at the time of the incident.

Police officers responded to multiple reports of a man discharging shots at a moving vehicle as it traveled on Fawn Way, which is located between Highway 50 and Glenwood Way.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is seeking an arrest warrant for James Michael Valero on three felony counts and one misdemeanor count following an attack Tuesday night on a 92 year old World War II veteran.

As previously released, four suspects were arrested related to burglaries. One of those suspects was Gary Joseph Masse who was paroled in July 2013 after serving prison time for a previous burglary conviction.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Moore was to be in court to exchange the children with Read on November 21. Attempts to contact Kathryn have been unsuccessful and a recent visit to her home has indicated that she has left with the children.

The Avoid the 6 DUI Task Force has given a fair warning to all partygoers: keep the party off the road.
“The scariest part of Halloween is not the spooky costumes and scary pranks, it’s the impaired drivers. All too often, partygoers don’t plan ahead and choose to drive impaired, but a costume can’t disguise drunk driving,” said Press Information Officer Dave Stevenson.

Raccoon skinning leads to arrest of at-large parolee, registered sex offender
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 08/20/2013 - 2:43pmSouth Lake Tahoe police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly skinning a raccoon after a foot chase ended on the South Tahoe Middle School ball field.
Kevin Burroughs, 37, faces several charges including unlawful taking of wildlife. He is also a parolee and a registered sex offender out of California and had a felony warrant for being a parolee-at-large. The raccoon’s remains were recovered and destroyed by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.
South Lake Tahoe police seek identity of unidentified patron in USA gas station murder
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 08/16/2013 - 6:06pmOn the night of Tuesday Aug. 8, an unidentified suspect walked into the USA gas station located at 2470 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe and killed Manpreet Singh, 27, of South Lake Tahoe, with a gunshot to the upper torso.
