How can children focus on solving a math problem or writing an English paper when he or she is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? School work is forced to compete with hunger.

TahoeChamber was present to officiate the ribbon cutting and Mayor Hal Cole cut the ribbon. It was a great turn out and a good start in the Lake Tahoe Humane Society’s mission to let the community learn about all their fantastic services, such as spay and neuter vouchers, emergency pet medical care assistance and an emergency pet food bank.
South Lake Tahoe Teen Victim of Hit & Run in Stable Condition
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/11/2014 - 12:08pmA 15 year old South Lake Tahoe teen is in stable condition today after being struck by a car, dragged through an intersection, and left in a snow bank at the corner of Washington and Third Streets on Monday evening. The suspect, a male driver, left the scene in a white or off white subaru.
His mother, Aisha Sequoiyah, spoke to SouthTahoeNow.com today from Renown Medical Center in Reno. She said her son Abiyah is doing okay and is undergoing cognitive tests today to determine that there is no brain damage. She hopes he will be released later today.
Barton Health's Outpatient Lab Moves to Fourth Street in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/05/2014 - 9:30pmBarton’s Health’s Outpatient Laboratory Services on South Avenue is moving to 1067 Fourth Street. Formerly the Tahoe Women’s Care building, this new spot will create an inviting, improved experience for our community and their laboratory needs.
The move will take a day or two, starting on February 20. Laboratory draws will be available for the public at the following two locations during the move: Barton Memorial Hospital (2170 South Avenue in South Lake Tahoe) and at Stateline Medical Center (155 Highway 50 in Stateline, Nevada).
"Always My Buddy" Has a Presence at SnowGlobe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/29/2013 - 10:29pmTragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.
Out of that tragedy, the "Always My Buddy" program was developed. Alyssa's family wanted to make sure another family didn't have to go through what they did by making sure everyone that is an unfamiliar place is safe.
American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.
Terri Arnold of South Lake Tahoe Wins Carson Valley Rider Contest

In September, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority announced its nationwide search for a “storyteller on horseback.” Fifteen women answered the call and in video submissions, which ranged from a poetic ode to the Carson Valley to a distinctive pair of pink stilettos, made their case to be the area’s spokeswoman.

A Farewell to Local Firefighter Mitch Underhill
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/20/2013 - 3:49pmThe South Lake Tahoe community said their goodbyes today to Lake Valley Firefighter Paramedic Mitch Underhill, both from the streets bordering his procession into town from Lake Valley to those inside the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. The 34 year old South Lake Tahoe native unexpectedly passed away on September 29.
Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.

LTCC Mourns Unexpected Death of Tahoe Firefighter, Former Instructor
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/02/2013 - 2:35pmLake Tahoe Community College joins the Lake Valley Fire Protection District in mourning the unexpected loss of firefighter paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill. The 34-year-old, known as Mitch, died Sunday, September 29th.
Underhill has been an instructor at LTCC as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy since 2009. He joined the Lake Valley Fire District in 2005, and served the community for just over 8 years in that capacity. He is survived by his wife, two young children, his parents, and his brother and sister.

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) came to the rescue with a $5,000 donation that will significantly replenish the shelves at the food bank for the 400 households it serves.

September 22, 2013 - 7:00am The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 12TH Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby is being held this Sunday, September 22, at Tahoe Paradise’s Lake Baron. The Derby is FREE to all children under the age of 16. The lake is being stocked with thousands of trout just for this event.
Don't worry if you don't have fishing equipment: fishing poles, tackle, power bait, and worms are also provided free of charge, or bring your own if you want.

NHP: Carson City man dies from injuries in Highway 50 hit and run at Stateline
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 09/02/2013 - 12:39pmA 31-year-old Carson City man hit by a vehicle that left the scene of the accident last month along Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe at Stateline has died from his injuries, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. Cody J. Dobson died on Friday, Aug. 23 from injuries in the early morning accident, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.
On the morning of Aug. 10, NHP troopers were dispatched to a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian who was struck just east of the casino corridor near Lake Parkway in Douglas County, said Allen.
Robbery at South Lake Tahoe El Dorado Savings Bank
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 08/21/2013 - 11:43amThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify the suspect who robbed the El Dorado Savings and Loan at 3443 Lake Tahoe Boulevard this morning around 9:30am.
Based on surveillance footage, the suspect appears to be a white male adult in his fifties, approximately 6’-2” tall, weight proportionate to height, wearing a beige baseball cap, a short-sleeved plaid button down shirt, khaki cargo shorts and flip flop sandals.
The suspect walked into the bank and presented the teller with a demand note. The suspect claimed to be armed but did not display a weapon.
South Lake Tahoe police warn of vacation rental property scam

At least 3 families have been victimized by this scam recently, and it is suspected there may be more victims of this crime that have yet to be reported.

Submitted by admin on Mon, 07/22/2013 - 6:30pmA single engine Mooney airplane crashed shortly after take off from the South Lake Tahoe airport at approximately 11:10 AM today.
The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.
The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.
Bank robber known as 'Fedora Bandit' sentenced to 9 years in prison

Wagner announced.

Police: South Lake Tahoe man confesses to El Dorado Savings Bank robbery

Paul Cortez was arrested by Reno police and booked into Washoe County Jail where he will be transferred to South Lake Tahoe and booked into El Dorado County Jail. Police say he confessed to details about the robbery and how much money was taken.

Police look for man who robbed South Lake Tahoe bank

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, with a black hoodie and snow googles. He is described as being slight to average build with scruffy facial fair and a black patch of hair on his left cheek, similar to a mole. He was wearing blue pants, black jacket with leather sleeves, similar to a letterman's jacket, South Lake Tahoe police report. No weapon was seen.

With the Factory Stores at the Y signing a multi-year lease agreement with Big 5 Sporting Goods, the South Lake Tahoe center may be able to find solid financial ground.
“I’m still in negotiations with the bank and trying to get a loan modification. Certainly the Big 5 lease helps me. But nothing has been settled yet,” Shannon Casteel told Lake Tahoe News.

Right now they contain the mural paintings of Kit Carson, V&T Railroad, Dat So La Lee, the Carson Mint, Carson Nugget, Roosevelt’s Speech Capital Building, Carson Brewery and Capital Building; but soon those walls could contain so much more.
