Carson Tahoe invites the community to join a free webinar on September 22 at 10 a.m., led by internationally recognized memory care expert David Troxel, MPH. The engaging online discussion will provide insight into the effective techniques and approaches for caring for loved ones living with forgetfulness, memory loss, Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

Yesterday at approximately 4:20 p.m., Carson Tahoe Health wheeled its first COVID-positive, intubated patient, Linda McCain, out of the Regional Medical Center and back home to her family.

The Gardnerville resident had been in their care for 26 days.

Staff gathered in an Honor Walk to cheer on McCain, who had been using a ventilator to assist in breathing and fighting the severe respiratory illness, COVID-19. She was brought to tears by the support of Carson Tahoe throughout her stay, as well as during her farewell, as were several staff members.

Back in 2019, the World Health Organization, the American Nurses Association and others pronounced 2020 Year of the Nurse, and in 2020 it would celebrate nurses and nursing. They chose this year because it’s the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing who trained nurses to focus on compassion with a commitment to patient care.

As we approach the one-month mark of socially distant living, I want to assure our community Barton Health takes the risk presented by COVID-19 seriously. We have planned, prepared and implemented pathways for patients to receive appropriate care in the safest possible environment.

This is an unprecedented time in health care and Barton, like the rest of the nation, is working to care for current and future patients during this pandemic, sometimes using new and innovative ways to reach and treat them.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is bringing a free five-week-long Aging and Caregiver educational series to South Lake Tahoe from April 13 - May 11, 2020.

The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.

The educational series will be held at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe, on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following dates:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE and TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has been selected to participate in the 2020 class of Cat Pawsitive, a life-saving initiative that introduces positive-reinforcement training to cats in shelters and rescues. Supported by the Petco Foundation, this innovative program aims to increase feline adoption rates and maintain cat “mojo.”

HSTT provides services both in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe.

Choices for Children of South Lake Tahoe is holding Parent Cafe, and evening with food, adult conversation and a chance for parents, grandparents, caregivers to get together and make connections. You are not alone in this journey.

The free evening on November 12 shows those interested in making their families stronger about the small, but significant changes that support not only them, but also the community, in their journey.

The Parent Cafe will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe which is located at 3079 Harrison Avenue #12. Childcare will be provided.

Keep Memory Alive hosted its annual Summer Social and Rodeo at Shakespeare Ranch, a private Lake Tahoe estate, this past weekend to raise money to support the work of Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and its fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ALS and more.

The El Dorado County Family Caregiver program is offering a six-week series of classes designed to provide instruction and support to caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.

It started on April 15 but participants can still join and attend any or all of the remaining sessions. This series is offered twice a year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced their 2019 grant recipients. This year, there were over 27 organizations who applied for the grants, with $84,000 being distributed to 14 non-profit organizations

Focus Grant recipients in the category of Poverty, Housing, or Basic Needs (up to $10,000 each):

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a free legal seminar on Friday, March 8 to help caregivers and family members of those with mental illness navigate the system to remove barriers and improve access to care for their loved ones in South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding communities.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After the recent tragic accidents and murders in Douglas County, many people may be feeling grief and anxiety as well as feelings of being unsafe. County officials want residents to know they aren't alone and there are several support groups in the community that offer help, reassurance and comfort during this difficult time.

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up another great Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children, teens and adults to read all summer long. Patrons at our library logged a total of 5,236 books and earned a total of 817 prizes! We would like to thank the businesses and organizations that donated prizes and funds to our program.

Prizes that children could choose from included gift certificates from Applebee’s Restaurant, Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza, Heavenly Village Cinema, McDonalds, and Modern Makers. Thank you to all of these businesses for their generous donations!

The Family Caregiver Support Program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency is pleased to present a free “Aging and Caregiving” educational series in South Lake Tahoe. This series will be held weekly on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. beginning April 16, 2018, and ending May 21, 2018, at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

The educational series will give instruction and support for people who provide care for a family member or friend aged 60 years or greater.

The series will feature a different topic each week:

Dr. Devendra I. Patel, aka Devendrakumar I. Patel, 58, of Elko, Nev., was arrested Tuesday on 39 charges of unlawful distribution of prescriptions opioids and Medicaid fraud.

Patel is charged with 36-counts of distribution of controlled substances such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and three-counts of health care fraud. He is a cardiologist at his medical practice, Northeastern Nevada Cardiology. The statutory maximum penalty for distribution of a controlled substance is 10 years in prison and the maximum penalty for health care fraud is 10 years in prison.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Philanthropy and South Lake Tahoe non-profits were recently celebrated by the Barton Foundation as they honored their 2017 grant recipients in a luncheon at Riva Grill.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and South Tahoe Now will be running a series of stories on suicide prevention.

“For anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to suicide, this month can be especially hard,” said Laura Walny, manager with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). “We hope that by supporting one another and working together to raise awareness about suicide, we can ultimately save lives.”

The community is invited to join the South Lake Tahoe Community Mental & Behavioral Health Cooperative for the 4th annual forum at South Tahoe High on Tuesday, May 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This is a free event and parents, caregivers, educators, coaches, therapists, clinicians, and volunteers are encouraged to attend.

The morning event will be facilitated by Michard Ward and is hosted by the Barton Health Foundation.

Ring in the holiday spirit at Barton Health’s eighth annual Festival of Trees & Lights. The winter celebration features events and entertainment starts Thursday, December 1 and continues through Sunday, December 4 at MontBleu Resort on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

“The Festival of Trees & Lights provides a warm and family-friendly atmosphere to inspire people to get into the spirit of holiday giving,” says Kindle Craig, the director of the Barton Foundation. “All the money raised goes back into the community and supports health and wellness programs.”

Historian Steve Davis will speak on a visual exploration of photography and the American West in the nineteenth century, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 3, at 10:00 am.

For the seventh year, the Barton Foundation is holding their annual Cocktails for a Cause event on Wednesday, September 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe. Not only will attendees get samples of alcoholic creations made by ten local bartenders, but they'll be treated with heavy appetizers, live music and a raffle.
