Actor Mark Ruffalo testifies at Nevada solar panel hearing in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 7:25pmA big-name actor joined others in testifying Wednesday before a panel on Nevada solar power rates. A rate hike that took effect on January 1 has caused a ripple through the industry, resulting in hundreds of layoffs.
The Public Utilities Commission met in Carson City to discuss whether to suspend controversial new rates for rooftop solar power customers. They were looking at requests from solar company groups and the state consumer advocate to put a stay on the new rate hikes.
The actor is a climate change advocate and was greeted by a standing ovation after his testimony.

Three in custody in connection with fatal Carson City shooting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 9:22amUPDATE 2:00 p.m. - Three young adults were taken into custody Monday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a young man over a marijuana deal near a park in north Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The three — two men and a woman — were arrested without incident by Carson City SWAT at an apartment complex on Fifth Street near Harbin Street. The three came out following demands by SWAT to surrender after investigators learned they had been hiding inside a residence.

The road is steep and over granite along the 130 miles from the Carson Valley to Placerville. When not the middle of summer, the road is muddy or buried by snow. A horse could cover the terrain in 24-hours.
The road is Johnson's Cut-off and the year is 1852. It was built by John Calhoun "Cock-eye" Johnson as a way to cut off 50 miles and 2,000 feet in elevation from the common route people took over Donner Summit as they emigrated West.
Thousands of Nevada earthquakes kept seismologists busy in 2015

Polar Express with 240 passengers breaks down in Lyon County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 10:51pmPDATE 10:15PM: Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrived at the disabled Polar Express train and passengers are now being taken off the railroad cars to meet up with JAC and Virginia City shuttle buses, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
"There's lots of kids, lots of adults and they are in good spirits," said McDaniel of the effort. The diesel train stalled after 8 p.m. north of Linehan Road in Lyon County. No injuries were reported. There's upwards of 240 passengers on the train.
Douglas County deputies looking for perfume thieves

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on that Sunday, a man and woman walked into the cosmetics store located at 911 Topsy Lane and allegedly stole a large quantity of men's fragrance.

The ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the state capitol grounds featured remarks from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Nevada Department of Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Mayor Bob Crowell and Kevin Howell, father of Carl Howell.
South Lake Tahoe hockey team raising funds for international finals in Canada

In order to help the young boys and girls with travel expenses, the team has started a fundraising campaign selling "Tahoe Strong" T-Shirts.
All 14 team members have excelled not only on the ice, but in the classroom according to fundraiser organizer Tye Watson. They players come from South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, Reno, Carson City and Minden.
One dead, four injured, and five cars damaged in crashes at SR88 and Mottsville Lane

Gardnerville resident Janis Hill, 64, died when her BMW entered the intersection at the same time as a Ford Taurus driven by 22-year-old Holly Ducoing of Carson City. The two cars collided and then hit a Honda SUV driven by Minden resident Robin Owens, 64, who was stopped at the intersection.
Hill had been traveling eastbound on Waterloo Lane and Ducoing was southbound on SR88 approaching the intersection with Mottsville Lane.

Douglas County Deputies Matthew Sampson and Steven Kimbrell graduated from the academy on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after attending the academy for four months. The P.O.S.T. academy is located at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility, in Carson City, Nev.
Father in custody after four-year-old boy ingests meth

Taken into custody was Pedro Montanez, 27, on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of trafficking levels of a controlled substance.
Gas explosion damages two vehicles, interrupts traffic in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/21/2015 - 7:30pmAn apparent gas main leak at the entrance to the Sunridge subdivision caused an explosion that damaged two vehicles and disrupted traffic on Highway 395 and Mica Drive in Douglas County.
Southbound 395 and westbound Mica Drive now open and moving normally. Northbound 395 is being rerouted via South Sunridge and North Sundridge drives.
A resident who lives nearby, Rick Dodds, a retired Carson City Sheriff deputy, said he witnessed the explosion, and saw it blow dirt and rocks about 100 feet into the air. He said it appeared to have damaged a wall on the property.

Blue skies and warming trend for South Lake Tahoe; Chance for new storm Sunday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 10:58amA storm that didn't match predictions has moved east of Lake Tahoe, leaving behind fresh snow and clearing skies. Forecasts call for warming days and chilly nights around Lake Tahoe.
The storm hit the Reno and Carson City area the hardes, with lake-effect snow which dropped from 6 to about 18 inches. The deepest Reno-area snow fell in Stead, Panther Valley and Cold Springs. Over 36,000 Nevada Energy customers were without power overnight, causing some schools to close Tuesday.

KOLO reports it has spoken with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and they said the light in the sky was confirmed through the John Wayne Airport tower to be a Naval test fire off the coast. No further details.

Another storm Sunday could bring more snow to Lake Tahoe

Snow could impact travel in the Sierra on Sunday and in the valleys of western Nevada by Monday. Temperatures will be cold to start the week with well below freezing overnight low temperatures throughout the region.

Several earthquakes in the Carson City area Wednesday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 4:22pmOver a dozen earthquakes have struck the region Wednesday, the largest being a magnitude 3.0, at 7:22 a.m. according to the Nevada Seismological Lab.
A 2.4 magnitude earthquake was registered at 7:23 a.m. followed by a 2.0, also at 7:23 a.m. and a 1.2 at 7:44 a.m. The earthquakes were centered around 9 miles southeast of Carson City. The other five in that area ranged in magnitude from .1 to 1.2.
There was a small .1 quake near Carnelian Bay at 9:39 a.m. Wednesday, followed by two at Topaz Lake and one in Reno.
Teddy bear filled with syringes found at Carson City school

The boy was stuck with one of the needles, which was then tested and found positive for methamphetamine.

The driver of the bus and two children aboard were not injured, said Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans.
"There were no injuries to anyone on the bus and the parents of the kids were there to pick them up," said Schreihans.
South Lake Tahoe man jailed on sex abuse charges

Samuel John Hernandez was arrested at 2:31 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Carson Street after a brief pursuit by deputies. He was considered a fugitive from justice in South Lake Tahoe on El Dorado County, Calif., warrant charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. Hernandez is being held on $500,000.

Carson City IHOP shooting victims, survivors remembered

Four years ago Sunday, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which the mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons suffered injuries.
Carson City teen dies at Lake Tahoe in water-related accident
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/22/2015 - 8:57pmA Carson City teenager died Saturday after authorities were called to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe for an accident on the water. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed the victim is a 15-year-old Carson High School student.
The teen’s name has not been released. A chaplain from Carson City has notified the parents, said Furlong. The teen died after he was taken to a Reno hospital after emergency crews were called to Sand Harbor at around noon Saturday. Washoe County authorities would not confirm if it was a possible drowning.

Thousands of people lined the streets of the state capitol to honor Howell who was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call at 2:25 p.m. on Friday, August 12 about about a man breaking windows at a neighbor's home, then trying to set his own house on fire after a neighborhood dispute on Lukins Way. The suspect, Derek Ernest Bogard, was not in the area when police arrived.

Smoke from California fires fills Lake Tahoe basin

The air in Reno reached the unhealthy range at 4 p.m. on Saturday with a 151 air quality index.
There is no single fire contributing to this, rather many large wildfires and wildfire complexes in northern California.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/07/2015 - 3:48pmTwo from South Lake Tahoe were arrested Thursday on felony drug trafficking and other charges after a traffic stop led to the discovery of methamphetamine and heroin, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Elizabeth Gosh, 30, and Kyle Leake, 48, were taken into custody at 7:04 p.m. and booked into Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, deputies with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team were patrolling in an unmarked car and observed a white two door sedan with California plates run through a solid red strop light at the intersection of Roop and Long streets.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/05/2015 - 5:45pmA fight between two inmates Tuesday at the Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City resulted in one of the prisoners being flown by Care Flight to a Reno hospital after he was shot by guards with rubber pellets, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. Six others were injured.
