South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Snow removal, fire code, state of emergency and more

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

Highway 50 back open over Echo Summit; Cars stuck on side roads

Echo Summit was closed this morning so crews could work on avalanche control, creating a backup not only on Highway 50 in Meyers, but on side roads leading to the summit. Heavy snow stranded several motorists on North Upper Truckee near Mt. Rainer. Lake Tahoe Blvd was closed at Sawmill Pond while the highway was closed to prevent more drivers from driving towards North Upper Truckee.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit closed for avalanche control, traffic backed up

8:25 p.m. update - Traffic is starting to move over Echo Summit.

8:00 p.m. update - Highway 50 from Meyers to Sly Park remains closed at this hour due to avalanche control. There have also been several spin-outs and other weather related issues according to and earlier Caltrans report.

Traffic has been backed up for hours on Highway 50 as people head to South Lake Tahoe for a weekend of fresh powder. Snow, snow covered roads and chain controls have made travel slow and now the road is closed between Meyers and Pollock Pines for avalanche control.

SLT Police contending with drivers going too fast and not prepared for conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - There are basic rules when behind the wheel, not only in fair weather, but also in stormy and snowy weather as South Lake Tahoe has been experiencing.

Here are tips for driving in snow from the American Automobile Association (AAA):
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly
- Drive slowly
- The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds
- Know your brakes
- Don't stop if you can avoid it
- Don't power up hills. ...
- Don't stop going up a hill
- Stay home

Another major storm for Lake Tahoe, feet of snow at lake level expected

1:00 p.m. update - The National Weather Service in Reno is updating their forecast as the storm heading to Lake Tahoe Sunday and Monday is trending towards "Big Snow."

On Friday, another round of heavy snow will start just after midnight Friday morning, impacting traffic throughout the day. Reno and the rest of Western Nevada will be impacted as well with up to several inches of valley floor snow.

NDOT reopens Kingsbury Grade

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced that State Route 207/Kingsbury Grade, the main connection between South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley is back open after temporary repairs were made to stabilize the sink hole.

"We actually put in an interim repair and in the spring or early summer we'll come back and completely reinstall the eroding drainage pipe that caused the sinkhole," said Meg Ragonese, NDOT Public Information Officer.

She told South Tahoe Now to remind motorists that even though the road is open tonight, chains or snow tires are required.
