Community food availability spots in South Lake Tahoe

The following is a list of locations at this time. All locations are in South Lake Tahoe unless otherwise noted:
Monday

Social determinants of health are defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as the conditions in places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect outcomes for health and quality of life. These determinants are complex, and can be deeply rooted; including income and employment opportunities, housing instability, food insecurity, family and social support, transportation, and adverse life effects.
Barton's Attic Thrift Store serving needs of community prior to reopening

Community support of volunteer time and donations has been overwhelming during these trying times.

Christmas Cheer All Year and the Northern Nevada Food Bank have teamed up to provide fresh produce for those in need in the South Lake Tahoe community.
They will be at the American Legion parking lot from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2020.
The American Legion is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Thank you also to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association for their $500 donation.
Many local individuals and businesses stepped in to make the holidays a little brighter for those in need, and for that we are grateful.

American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/09/2018 - 12:13amTwenty-six local nonprofits were awarded $78,974 Thursday in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship thanks to funds raised during the 2018 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.
“The continued support from our partners American Century Investments and NBC Sports means so much to this community,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “These contributions benefit so many in the South Shore a long time after the tournament ends.”

The next Shops at the Heavenly Village Wine Walk on Thursday, March 22, will be raising funds for Christmas Cheer All Year. It takes place at shops throughout the village from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Sample wine crafted from Amador County, food specials, and chances to win great prizes at every location.
Check in at the tent in the center of the Village. Cost is $20 per person.

Once again we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our South Shore community. 160 pounds of food and 85 toys were collected.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/09/2017 - 5:53pmAmerican Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.
On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

There were a total of 78 vehicles and approximately 200 people on foot either walking, biking, or dancing. American Legion Post 795 served as the parade marshals.
The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to say "Thank You" to all the parade participants, businesses and volunteers for making the 4th of July parade a fantastic community event!

Holiday Parade heads through South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The fourth annual Holiday Parade will make its way through South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, December 12 starting at 3:00 p.m.
Golden Bear Events is the organizer of the event which will raise money and food for Christmas Cheer, South Lake Tahoe's year-round food pantry.
This year, ten parade entries will start at the top of Ski Run Blvd, head down towards the lake, turn west on Highway 50 and end in the TJMaxx parking lot where people can enjoy cookies and a visit with Santa Claus. The parade should end there at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Over 100 people attended and together we raised $3,650 for charities Christmas Cheer All Year and Bread and Broth. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout and the amount of donations we received. We’d like to thank Riva Grill for hosting the event and providing the generous spread.

Christmas Cheer is a local food pantry in South Lake Tahoe that relies 100 percent on donations and is located at 1022 3rd St. South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Christmas Cheer's food pantry pilfered by bears
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/15/2014 - 9:35pmBears apparently found the food pantry at Christmas Cheer All Year too good to pass up on Monday night. Board Member Tom Davis reported that bears broke into the food pantry and helped themselves to the food used to feed those community members in need.
Christmas Cheer All Year is asking for the community’s support with food and monetary donations as they begin to restock their shelves.

As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."
As a community that is in the midst of change, we can be reminded of these quotes as we move forward and live in a town we're both proud of, and a vibrant part of.
A Time of Giving: STAR Spreads Good Cheer

They gave Christmas Cheer All Year $5,000 prior to the holidays and have now given both Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free $5,000.
