Planning Commission denies changes to planned cannabis microbusiness in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is now an open license for a South Lake Tahoe cannabis microbusiness after one of those approved in 2019 will not finish up the process of opening. On January 14, 2021, the City Planning Commission denied a request from James Street LLC to change the name of the approved operator and extend their deadline to open by six months.

Special Planning Commission meeting to address new building standards and cannabis permit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.

First on the agenda is a possible vote on an update to City Code and the design standards included in it after receiving a grant from the State to do so. There have been public workshops and meetings with contractors and developers, along with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), to get their input on the updates the standards.

"In God We Trust" sign added to Douglas County board chamber wall

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A new "In God We Trust" display has been added to the wall of the Douglas County Board Chamber. In 2019, the County Commissioners passed a resolution supporting the display of the national motto in the chambers and after fundraising efforts the sign was created by the winning bidder, YESCO, LLC.

The new "In God We Trust" was installed during the commissioner's December 10, 2020 meeting.

Former South Lake Tahoe CSO now Douglas County clerk-treasurer

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Former South Lake Tahoe Police Department Community Service Officer Amy Poole was named the new clerk-treasurer for Douglas County Thursday.

Poole was one of three candidates vying to fill Clerk-Treasurer Kathy Lewis's term. During the Douglas County Commissioner meeting, Poole was selected and fill the remaining two years of Lewis' term. Lewis resigned and her last day is Friday, December 18.

“I love every aspect of government,” said Poole Thursday. “I’m willing to be trained and I’m humble enough to know that the staff knows more than I do.”

Gary S. Slossberg appointed as El Dorado County Superior Court Commissioner

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A new court commissioner has been announced by the El Dorado County Superior Court. After an extensive search and vetting process, Gary
S. Slossberg was appointed by Presiding Judge Suzanne Kingsbury.

Slossberg will be based in Placerville but will serve in all of the courts in El Dorado County. He will specialize in cases involving family law, child support, domestic violence and civil harassment, juvenile dependency and delinquency, traffic, limited civil cases, as well as overflow matters as assigned by the Presiding Judge.

More ballot counts have been released by the elections departments at both El Dorado and Douglas Counties.

El Dorado County election officials have released another tally of ballots counted. The results remain the same as of the November 10 count. Votes Cast: 116,744 of 135,554, or 86.12 percent of eligible voters.

Douglas County officials give update on Saturday's protest

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In response to the number of people and groups expected at a protest in Minden, Nevada on Saturday, Douglas County officials have expanded traffic controls to keep everyone safe.

Cement walls have alread been installed to block motor vehicle traffic on Water Street to allow participants to move safely and freely on foot in the area. The protest is planned for 11:00 a.m. on August 8 on the steps of the Judicial Law Enforcement Center in Minden. The road is planned to be closed until Monday.

Incline Village and Crystal Bay homeowners to get $56M tax refund

Incline Village and Crystal Bay property owners will be soon getting refunds from Washoe County after the County Commission approved a settlement of an estimated $56M during their meeting Tuesday. Half of those funds will come from Washoe County and the rest will come from the other beneficiaries of those tax payments - Washoe County School District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Incline Village Improvement District, and the State of Nevada.

Carson Valley Days festival canceled but parade is still happening Saturday

TRPA approves 6,000 seat Tahoe South Event Center

STATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board today unanimously approved the Tahoe Douglas Visitor’s Authority Tahoe South Event Center planned for the parking lot area of Montbleu Casino Resort in Stateline. Edgewood Tahoe has donated the 13.3 acres at the corner of Lake Parkway and Highway 50 needed for the center.

Two Douglas County Commissioners get into altercation during Lake Tahoe meeting

STATELINE, Nev. - There was an altercation between two members of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Thursday, May 16 at a meeting in Stateline at Lake Tahoe.

The incident happened at around 5:55 p.m. and involved two board members, Commissioner Chairman Barry Penzel and Commissioner John Engels.

According to a Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges, the Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the commissioners meeting at Stateline for a heated argument. A few minutes later an altercation broke out. Both parties were separated on their own, only minor injuries were reported.

Douglas County VHR Task Force holds first meeting

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - This past fall the Douglas County Commissioners approved a new Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance with a promise to continue to modify as needed as they balance the rights of the property owner with the rights of those living in the neighborhoods around them.

They appointed a VHR Task Force to operate as an advisory group that will meet, discuss and offer recommendations to the County Manager on the permitting, management and/or limitation of vacation home rentals.

Douglas County looking at automatic sprinkler ordinance at commissioner meeting

STATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Commissioners will be considering the adoption of a new fire code which would require the installation of automatic fire sprinklers on new construction of homes less than 5,000 square feet. Their approval would acknowledge that benefits outweigh the cost to homeowners.

The meeting in Minden, which starts at 1:00 p.m., is normally fed live through the internet but as of 10:00 a.m. there were some technical difficulties and it may not be shown online.

Douglas commissioners oppose Nevada gun background check law

Douglas County has made it clear to the State of Nevada they won't stand for any legislation that exceeds federal firearm transfer requirements. Their reaction came after Governor Steve Sisolak signed SB 143, a bill that would require background checks on gun sales, on February 15, 2019.

Douglas County again looking for task force members as they revamp VHR ordinance

STATELINE, Nev. - Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in Douglas County were on last Thursday's agenda for the Board of County Commissioners, leading them to seek additional representatives for their newly appointed VHR Task Force.

Douglas County uses the services of Host Compliance, the same company hired by the City of South Lake Tahoe to seek out unlicensed VHRs and under-reported Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT). They charge the County $94,000 annually for their services.

Douglas county manager resigns just days after accepting position

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Just one week ago the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners made the announcement that Tom Stone accepted their offer of employment, making him the new county manager.

On January 16, 2019, Stone submitted his resignation.

“Effective immediately I am resigning from my position as Douglas County Manager. I want to thank the Board for giving me this opportunity to serve,” stated Stone.

Having to search for a new county manager isn't something new for Douglas County.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Due to a forecast storm and concerns for driving and safety, the Douglas County commissioners have postponed their January 17 meeting.

A special meeting has been scheduled for January 24, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe to hear the items from the January 17, 2019 agenda. The agenda has been removed from the County's website so it is unknown at this time what those items might be.

Tom Stone selected as new Douglas County manager

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - It has been announced by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners that Tom Stone is the new county manager.

Stone, who beat out 42 potential candidates for the position, has lived in Douglas County since 2011.

“I’m looking forward to working with all five commissioners and the great staff at Douglas County”, said Stone. “Seldom in a person's lifetime do they have the opportunity to serve two exceptional counties in two great States. I am truly honored.”

Douglas County seeking citizens for Vacation Home Rental Task Force

There is a Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Task Force being formed in Douglas County and interested representatives from the community have been invited to apply.

At their November 15 meeting, Douglas County Board of County Commissioners asked staff to organize the task force for the purpose of offering recommendations to the County Manager on the permitting, management and/or limitation of vacation home rentals. This group will be advisory only.

Oversight committee to be appointed for South Lake Tahoe recreation funds

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An oversight committee will be established for the 2016 voter-approved Measure P which raised tourist accommodation tax (TOT) by two percent to build a new recreation center in South Lake Tahoe.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting the elected team reviewed criteria for the future committee, and what sectors of the community will be sought. Those chosen will take part in the review of how funds are spent and report back to the public.

Douglas County VHR survey results released: Topic on next board meeting agenda

Over 1,000 Douglas County residents responded to an online survey regarding vacation home rentals (VHR) and those results are now available. The input on the surveys is equal to approximately 50 hours of public comment.

New interim manager hired for Town of Genoa

After losing their town manager to the Douglas County Public Works Department, the Town of Genoa has approved an interlocal agreement to appoint Melissa Blosser in their top spot.

Blosser is also Douglas County's community relations manager and public information officer and will be splitting her duties between the two roles through an interlocal agreement.

The $4,500 month-to-month contract was approved by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners on October 18, 2018. Former Town Manager Phil Ritger accepted a position as the County's new public works director.

New City Manager hired for South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe City Council today voted unanimously to hire Frank Rush as their new city manager starting December 5, 2018.

The 49-year-old Rush gave his notice to the Emerald Isle, NC town commissioners, resigning the position he'd held for 17 years in the small oceanside resort community.

Public input sought for BIjou Community Park master plan

SOUTH LAKE THAOE, Caif. - What does the future Bijou Community Park look like? Will it expand, offer different recreational opportunities or does it remain the same?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Commissioners and City staff will host a public workshop at Bijou Community Park on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to obtain feedback from community members on opportunities to expand and create access to outdoor recreation.

The workshop is going to be "fun and interactive," according to organizers and will also include refreshments.

Douglas County wants resident input on VHRs

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Vacation rentals are a hot issue on both sides of the state line, and Douglas County Board of County Commissioners have approved updating their County Code concerning short-term rentals of homes for 28 days or less in the Tahoe Township.

Interim county manager named for Douglas County

Jenifer Davidson was appointed as the interim county manager during the Douglas County's Board of County Commissioner meeting August 16, a job she will start on August 31.

Currently Davidson is the assistant county manager, a job she has held since March of this year.

County Manager Larry Werner asked in June to be released from his contract as of August 31.

Restoration of Upper Truckee River planned near Lake Tahoe Golf Course; Public comment ends July 30

There are just two days left for the public to comment on a proposed restoration project of the Upper Truckee River that runs adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course and Washoe Meadows State Park.

All agencies which wish to request grant funding from the Board of County Commissioners, Community Grant Program for Fiscal Year of 2018-19 must complete and submit a Grant Application. Please be advised that due to limited funding, not all applicants may receive funding and some applicants may only receive partial funding.

Douglas County Manager Larry Werner asks to be released from contract

Douglas County Manager Larry Werner has requested to be released from his contract giving a 60 day notice effective August 31, 2018.

“The time I have spent working for Douglas County has been challenging but rewarding,” said Larry. “I know that it is time for me to pursue retirement and family, but I will miss working with the great people in this community in this capacity.”

Discussion of Larry’s resignation and a plan for the future of the position will be held at the July 5, 2018 Board of County Commissioners meeting and has been placed on the meeting agenda.
