Douglas county manager resigns just days after accepting position

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Just one week ago the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners made the announcement that Tom Stone accepted their offer of employment, making him the new county manager.

On January 16, 2019, Stone submitted his resignation.

“Effective immediately I am resigning from my position as Douglas County Manager. I want to thank the Board for giving me this opportunity to serve,” stated Stone.

Having to search for a new county manager isn't something new for Douglas County.

The recent past in the office:

Steve Mokrohisky - County manager from July 2011 to Feb. 28, 2014

Larry Werner - Filled in as county manager for six months in 2014.

Jim Nichols - County manager for 17 months from September 2014 to January 2016 until he resigns

Larry Werner - Returns February 4, 2016 to stay until end of year. Instead, stays until August 2018.

During this time frame the County has also gone through a few assistant county managers.

At the December 17, 2018, meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, the Board passed a motion to have Douglas County make a conditional offer to Tom Stone as Douglas County Manager based on passing the requisite background checks and successful contract negotiations, the County said in a press release.

On January 7, 2019, the county commissioners approved Stone's contract by a vote of 3-2 and he started work January 10.

An item will be placed on the Douglas County Board of Commissioners agenda for February 7, 2019, to accept and ratify Stone's resignation. It is also anticipated that a separate item will placed on the agenda to allow the Board to discuss the vacant position and determine the best course of action moving forward.
