Keith Karl Klein, age 78, died peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, surrounded by his wife and close friends, following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Toxic algae tests underway on samples from South Lake Tahoe beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are testing water and algae in the Kiva Beach area after a man reported the death of his dog after allegedly being in Lake Tahoe behind Tallac Historic Site a week ago.

The death of the dog came to the attention of Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board late Wednesday, August 21. The following day they were joined by the El Dorado County Environmental Health Department along the stretch of beach the dog's owner said they were at the previous Sunday. They spoke with the owner and retraced their steps that day.

Marlin Joseph "Hersh" Herschman ~ 1943 - 2019

Hersh Herschman was never a certified tennis professional, but many of those who he instructed would say otherwise.

Born Marlin Joseph Herschman on Jan. 12, 1943, in St. Ignatius, Montana, he would always be best known as Hersh or The Hersh Man. He died Aug. 7, 2019, at The Chateau at Gardnerville in Nevada of inoperable brain cancer. His wife, Sheryl, and best friend for more than 40 years Greg Painter were with him. He was 76.

After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Montana in 1961, Hersh joined the U.S. Army for two years. He spent two summers at West Point.

Krista Kline Carson ~ 1971 - 2019

Krista Kline Carson passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019 surrounded by family and friends after a 3½ year battle with cancer. Always positive, always upbeat she would constantly describe her life as AWSOME! She was a positive force for everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband Jesse Kalin (Philip) Carson, daughter Trella Ruth Carson, parents Don and Gwen Kline, brother and sister-in-law Scott and Jen Kline, step-daughter Madison Merz, step-son Travis Steidle and uncles, cousins and other relatives too numerous to mention.

Final piece of the Lake Tahoe fire camera network now in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What would happen if fire-fighting agencies could stop a wildfire before it gains momentum and wipes out homes, communities and/or forests? That is being answered with well over 100 fire cameras now in place across the west, all because of foresight of Dr. Graham Kent, the Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

Swimmer drowns near Crystal Bay in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is reporting an adult male drowned Friday off the shore at Crystal Bay on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

The initial call was received at 11:45 a.m. on August 2. The caller reported a non-responsive swimmer was spotted off the shore of a private beach. North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and WCSO both responded.

Witnesses on the beach were able to pull the man out of the water and start with life-saving measures. Emergency personnel continued but were unable to revive him.

Holocaust Survivor & Author Leon Malmed to Speak

The Chabad at Lake Tahoe will welcome author and Holocaust survivor Leon Malmed for a special presentation and accompanying book signing of his memoir “We Survived … At Last I Speak”

In 1942, Malmed and his sister were separated from their parents in occupied France when Malmed was 5-years-old. His parents ultimately perished at the now infamous death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and he and his sister never saw them again. Malmed eventually immigrated to the United States in 1964, and went on to live in New York for the next 18 years.

One drowns in Lake Tahoe; another rescued

7/22/19 10:20 AM Update: The El Dorado County Sheriff's office said the man who died in Lake Tahoe Saturday was 27-years-old. He drowned after falling off of a watercraft near Lester Beach in South Lake Tahoe. He was not wearing a life vest.

The man's name and hometown will not be released until his family has been identified and notified of his death.

San Mateo County correctional officer identified as Lake Tahoe drowning victim

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A correctional officer with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has been identified as the man who drowned at Zephyr Cove on Tuesday.

"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Correctional Officer Andreiam Jeffrey “AJ” Arqueza. AJ passed yesterday afternoon in a drowning accident while enjoying days off with friends in the Lake Tahoe area," said the San Mateo County Code 30 Foundation on a Facebook post.

Former South Tahoe High Teacher loses cancer battle

Vali Dees, beloved wife and daughter, passed away at her home in South Lake Tahoe this July 7th, 2019 at 6:45 PM. She was attended by her husband, Jeff Davies, and her mother, Helen Valborg, when she finally succumbed to the cancer she had been so determined to overcome. Her death deprives the world and all who knew her of a bright and healing light.

Bay Area man drowns in Lake Tahoe at Zephyr Cove

10:45 p.m. update: A San Mateo County Correctional Officer has been identified as the victim in Tuesday's drowning at Zephyr Cove.

Ray Kope ~ 12/19/43 - 1/13/19

Raymond Donald Kope passed away on January 13, 2019, at his winter home in Cathedral City, California, with his wife, Cat, by his side.

Ray was born to Michael Kope and Edith Roskos Kope on December 19, 1943, in Lakewood, Ohio. When he was a young boy, his family left their home in Ohio and headed west to the San Jose, California, area where Ray attended grammar and high schools.

Identity of man found deceased on South Lake Tahoe golf course released

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- The identity of the man found deceased on the 4th of July at the Bijou Municipal Golf Course has been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff Coroner. 55-year-old Dean Kohler of South Lake Tahoe was found near the entrance to the golf course which is located on Fairway Avenue.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said the deceased was not wearing clothing but no foul play is suspected. The case is still under investigation and cause of death is not known.

Body of man found near South Lake Tahoe golf course

3:10 PM update: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department says the body found today at Bijou Municipal Golf Course is that of a 55-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident. No foul play is suspected.

The name of the deceased person will not be released until next of kin has been notified. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The naked body of a man was found at the Bijou Municipal Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is at the scene along with other agencies.

As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.

Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

Fatal DUI suspect makes Douglas County court appearance

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The man accused of causing the death of Carson City resident Hugo Parra-Solis was in Tahoe Township Court on Tuesday.

Dressed in his jail-issued jumpsuit and shoes, the chained Jerrad Dominguez appeared in front of visiting Judge Nancy Oesterle. He does not have an attorney and told the judge he was trying to secure a Nevada attorney. Due to a lack of counsel, Dominguez did not enter any pleas.

Aryan Brotherhood prison gang drug and murder ring broken up with help of El Dorado County DA's Office

The El Dorado County (EDC) District Attorney's Office recently helped with a state-wide investigation focused on offenders operating a criminal enterprise from both inside and outside state prisons.

Sixteen members and associates of a prison-based gang have been charged after a long-running investigation into drug trafficking and murders inside and outside of California’s prisons.

The EDC DA office's investigative division has the kind of highly trained and experienced detectives that are often called in to help with operations of this magnitude.

1982 Mt. Rose murder solved through genetic genealogy

On July 17, 1982, the body of a woman was found off of a hiking trail in the Sheep's Flat area near Mt. Rose just a few miles above Incline Village, was found. There was no identification or jewelry on the victim and investigators could tell by her clothing she may have been headed to Lake Tahoe when she was murdered.

And there was no suspect.

For over three decades, both her and her killer's identity have been unknown but with new DNA technologies, hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists, the case has been solved.

El Dorado County woman accused of abusing and torturing adopted daughters

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A 63-year old Placerville woman is behind bars tonight after being arrested on charges she brutally abused her four adopted daughters for years.

Patricia Taylor was an adoptive parent of four juvenile females who had lived in her residence from young ages and are now between the ages of 11-16. Taylor had fostered and adopted several other children in the past who have since become adults and moved out of her home.

Susan Allison Mancini ~ 3/26/62 - 4/30/19

Allison, also affectionately known as Allidaughter, was born in Bishop, California to Mary Strobel and Robert Dietz when Robert was the manager of the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.

Judge's decision in South Lake Tahoe courtroom calls California law unconstitutional

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One could feel the air let out of a South Lake Tahoe courtroom as visiting Judge Gary Mullen read his decision to the five defendants, their five lawyers and family members in attendance, one that tossed out their request to drop murder charges against all of the suspects in the robbery and murder in 2016 of Dennis Wright.

Judge Mullen declared California Senate Bill 1437 unconstitutional. The bill was signed by then-California Governor Jerry Brown in September 2018 and changed the liability for accomplices to felony murder.

Kelly Jay Arnold ~ 1963 -2019

The memory of Kelly Arnold will be celebrated at a gathering of his friends at the American Legion Hall in South Lake Tahoe on May 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Kelly Jay Arnold, 56, of South Lake Tahoe, California died from a brain abscess on April 1, 2019, in Reno, Nevada.

Kelly was born in Greeley, Colorado on March 24, 1963 to Gerald and Dorothy (Bartlett) Arnold. Growing up he was active in Boy Scouts and attended John Evans and Greeley Central High School.

Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

Bread & Broth celebrates 30 years, volunteers and Father Grace just before his death

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a celebration of 30 years of serving food to the local community through St. Theresa Church's Bread & Broth program. It was a celebration of the volunteers that make their Monday Night meals, Second Serving meals and Bread & Broth 4 Kids so successful in feeding those in need, not only of food but for camaraderie and community.

Local author to hold talk and book signing at museum

Local author JoAnn Conner will be speaking and signing books at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum on Saturday, March 30, at 1:00 p.m. The topic will be "The Importance of Research in Writing." Conner will introduce her latest book, Death Song, and will have all three of her mystery novels available for sale. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Historical Society.

The museum is located at 3058 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
