CAPP Fund created to help South Lake Tahoe high school students with college application costs
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/09/2020 - 3:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new nonprofit organization based on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe has been formed to help high school seniors apply for colleges by picking up the application fees.
The CAPP Fund was opened in 2020 with a goal of increasing access to higher education by helping high school seniors at both South Tahoe High School and George Whittell High School with the costs of a four-year college application. Each application costs between $60 and $100 and the costs can add up when seeking the college(s) of their choice.

Having sponsored five to six Bread & Broth (B&B) meals annually for the past several years, the Rotary Club has demonstrated its commitment to dedicating their time and talents to tackling humanitarian challenges.

Family Resource Center “Bookworks” celebrates 27 years serving South Lake Tahoe community

The nonprofit's store is currently located in the Lakeview Plaza, 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd # 9, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Their current hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Through the generous support of the local community with donations of books and the volunteers who manage the store, there are currently over 5000 books that cover over 160 genres for sale.

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.
Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Soroptimist International Club of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) invites the community to their weekly meeting on Thursday, February 27 when they feature Barton Health's Neurology Specialist, Rituparna Das, MD. The doctor will share insights on brain function and brain health.
The meeting will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Coffee will be served and both men and women are invited.

The Moose Lodge sponsored their annual Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment by donating $300 to cover the costs of the food and associated expenses necessary to provide the hot, full-course meal served at the dinner.
Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe recognizes World Spay Day with free surgeries
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2020 - 12:56pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is joining local veterinarians as well as the Town of Truckee in providing free spay and neuter surgeries during World Spay Day on February 25 and February's Spay/Neuter Awareness Month around Lake Tahoe.
The procedures are available for qualifying cats or dogs in the community to mark World Spay Day on February 25th, 2020. South Lake Tahoe appointments are full that day, but there are still some available on the North Shore.
Positive results for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe during their first two months
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/12/2020 - 8:26pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Providing a much-needed service in the community, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been filling a void with special pet therapy training, wellness clinics, spay and neuter programs.
Since opening in December 2019, HSTT has provided over 100 spay and neuters to the community for free or at a reduced rate. They have also trained 60 new volunteers.

Funding for reimagination and renovation of Spooner State Park now in place

A collaboration between Nevada State Parks, Nevada State Lands and the Tahoe Fund has been successful in securing funding and donations to complete plans for the 35-year-old park.

More than 120 community members attended the January 23 mixer to raise money and food for the group that feeds almost 180 school-age students with a backpack of weekend food as well as hot meals for everyone on Monday and Friday evenings.

Ever since the inception of B&B’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorship program back in 2012, the Kiwanis Club has been adopting the second Monday dinner in the month of January. The Club was one of the first organizations to host an AAD and they have been a consistent supporter of B&B’s goal of easing hunger in our community.

Thank you also to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association for their $500 donation.

"He was a fabulous guy with a rock-star charisma," says the description on the page. "Mark was A dedicated father to his daughter Taylor and an active volunteer in the South Tahoe community. His sudden passing on December 18 has left his family and friends in shock."

Identified through SOS Outreach, the kids met with the jolly Santa Claus and were given bags of gifts to take home.
Barton Gala raises $90K for Family Birthing Center in South Lake Tahoe

Their pledges and donations during the evening hit a record-breaking $90,000 to support community health in the Lake Tahoe area.
This year’s Gala beneficiary was the Family Birthing Center at Barton Memorial Hospital, with proceeds from the black tie soiree funding medical equipment and training to keep at-risk newborns close to their families in those precious first moments together.

The South Lake Tahoe Association of REALTORS® (STAR) would like to thank realtors and the local community for taking part with their donations to fulfill the wish lists of 50 children.
Holiday “Wish Tree” gift tags were crafted from the list provided by BGCLT and each child selected received two gifts, said Jana Nelson, co-chair of the program and STAR communications and public relations chair.
Climb Up! Program in South Lake Tahoe to give under-served youth climbing experiences

The Climb Up! program is planned to improve the lives of under-served youth by introducing them to the adventure and joy of rock climbing. Climb Up! uses mentorship to teach youth about five core values which can be applied to climbing and can carry over into all aspects of life: Communication, Balance, Trust & Teamwork, Resilience and Confidence.

Ronald Gordon Renaldi ~ 1933 - 2019

Born in Oakland, California on October 26, 1933 to Hazel and Joseph Renaldi. Ron grew up in Oakland, graduating from Saint Elizabeth High School in 1951. He earned a BS from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955.
Warm Room plans to open in South Lake Tahoe on Monday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/14/2019 - 9:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Warm Room is set to open for the winter on Monday, December 16 at 5:00 p.m. The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) announced today they have secured 989 Third Street for their location this season and will open pending completion of a final City inspection.
During the winter, TCH provides overnight refuge from the elements at the Warm Room. The Warm Room provides a safe and warm environment for adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness.
Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/10/2019 - 9:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.
HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

Until December 17 they will be receiving items at their Stateline, Nevada Visitor Center location across the highway from Lakeside Inn at 169 US50. They are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble raise almost $4K for Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless

The City of South Lake Tahoe and TCH were cosponsors of the event and are thanking the community for their support.
“This event just keeps getting better and better and that is thanks in large part to the community support,” said Recreation Superintendent Lauren Thomaselli. “This year's Turkey Trot was one of the best we’ve had and all raised money and donations for some very worthy causes.”

It started on November 7, 2018. Ricky Reich, a local man who has become known as "The Angel of Tahoe's Guardian," walked into the studios of KRLT-FM on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada. He had been listening to Howie Nave's Morning Rush shown on the station and wanted to pay homage to Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe.

The museum opens its doors at 11:00 a.m. Enjoy book store specials, a decorated historic cabin, docent tours, and their special spiced cider, all until 7:00 p.m.
Then, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., join in all the reindeer fun! The party moves over to the SLT Recreation Center gym for an evening of free family enjoyment.

Choices for Children holding Winter of Warmth clothing and accessory drive
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/03/2019 - 8:30pmChoices for Children will be able to give away winter clothing and accessories to the youngest and most vulnerable members of the community due to a grant they received from the El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF) for their Winter of Warmth (W.O.W.) initiative.
Community agencies including child care providers, social workers, and Head Start teachers can soon refer families of children ages 0-5 (not yet in TK or Kindergarten) to get the boots, gloves, socks and snow clothes that they need.

On Campus
Thursday morning, woodshop teacher, Nathan Crnich was arrested at the STHS campus on sexual misconduct charges. While news was shocking to many, students said they feel safer.

The 30th annual community Bread & Broth Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Monday, November 25 inside Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The meal is open to all members of the community just as it has been every Monday at Grace Hall since 1989.
During the Thanksgiving Dinner, 300 pounds of turkey, 100 pounds of stuffing, 50 pies, 50 pounds of carrots, 90 pounds of green beans and bags of sweet potatoes are cooked for about 300 members of the community.
South Lake Tahoe group seeks school supplies to take to migrant children
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/14/2019 - 8:45pmA group from South Lake Tahoe will be returning to Tijuana on November 22 to deliver school supplies to children who are living in shelters while they seek asylum in the United States. The shelters house hundreds of children, many of whom have spent months, if not years, outside of the school system. Many may not have ever been able to attend in their home countries.
The children are being taught by a volunteer-led mobile school project. The most needed supplies are: Notebooks, backpacks, paint, glue, table games, and all general school supplies,

New Vail Resorts report highlights community and sustainability achievements

In the Lake Tahoe area, $1.9 million in grants was given to 93 local organizations.

It takes a toll on everyone. Personally, I have a cousin who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and he likely has less than two years with his family.

The Monday Meal, served from 4 – 5:30 p.m., is a hot, nutritious, full-course dinner and the Second Serving meal, served on Fridays from 4 – 5:00 p.m. is a soup served with a simple entrée.

Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.

Tahoe Douglas Fire raises funds to award scholarship to Douglas High student
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/04/2019 - 6:39pmROUND HILL, Nev. - Every Labor Day, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) holds a pancake breakfast to support local students in their quest for higher education, and in particular in the field of public service.
They serve Douglas County at Lake Tahoe from the top of Kingsbury Grade to the top of Spooner Summit. This year they chose to invest in the Douglas High School graduating class of 2019 and awarded Alexa Moss with their annual scholarship.
Many of their employees and retirees reside in the valley and have raised their families there.
Community Toy Drive at South Lake Tahoe American Legion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Help bring joy to a child this holiday season by joining in the Community Toy Drive on Saturday, October 5 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 795.
There will be live music with Tony and Al, a raffle and silent auction.
Bring a new, unwrapped toy (no toy guns or toy knives please) and/or non-perishable food items for Christmas Cheer. Cash donations are also accepted.
