“For the last 18 months, El Dorado County has developed and executed a strategic approach to economic development in order to elevate the profile of our part of the Greater Sacramento Region,” said Don Ashton, the County’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Still time to vaccinate against the flu this winter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/07/2017 - 9:25pmFlu season is ramping up and the El Dorado County Public Health is reminding people to get vaccinated. Two Washoe County residents in their 80s died this week due to the flu.
“Thanksgiving week was the first week this fall that the numbers of people in the U.S. who saw their healthcare providers for flu-like symptoms were higher than baseline, heralding the onset of the flu season,” said El Dorado County Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams. “Vaccination can prevent the flu.”

Gardnerville man sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/29/2017 - 11:04pmStephan L. DeGraffenreid will be spending the next 15 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Howard D. McKibben.
DeGraffenreid plead guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor in September. He was sentenced to the minimum number of years for those charges.
Wine Walk at Heavenly Village to raise funds for fire victims

The Heavenly Village will have a Wine Walk on Thursday, November 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sample wines crafted and shared by the Carson Road Wineries (El Dorado County), food specials and chances to win great prizes at every location.
The cost is a $20 donation and all proceeds go directly to Santa Rosa area families and first responders who were affected by the recent wildfires.
Parking every night after 5:00 p.m. in the Heavenly Village parking garage is just $5 for the evening. The tent for the event is by the fountain and stop by for your tickets there.
Small child found asleep in car with hypodermic needles and pill bottles
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/27/2017 - 9:23pmFour people were arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) after a child was found asleep in a car full of hypodermic needles and pill bottles at the Red Hawk Casino in Shingle Springs, Calif.
Security officers from the casino noticed the car in their parking structure with the occupants asleep with a child asleep in the back seat. As they looked closer they could also see many hypodermic needles and pill bottles throughout the vehicle and called the deputies.
Grinches ruin El Dorado County tree farm's Christmas season

The heartless holiday crime will end a 40-year tradition.
“They clearly busted in the door, they broke off the steal bar, and huge padlock that was on here,” says Gary Schoennauer of the Cedar Ravine Tree Farm in PLacerville, Calif.

10:58 p.m. - Driving without a license - Stockton Ave - A TRAFFIC STOP WAS CONDUCTED ON A VEHICLE FOR AN INFRACTION. IT WAS LATER LEARNED THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE WAS UNLICENSED. THE 32-YEAR-OLD FEMALE DRIVER WAS LATER CITED AND RELEASED.

New EDC Traction Control Ordinance ready to be enforced
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/24/2017 - 1:43amVehicles without the proper traction control device on their cars while on El Dorado County roads this winter may be fined and/or towed.
Massive traffic jams on Sundays in Meyers throughout last winter led drivers onto side streets without chains or snow tires on their vehicles, creating a parking lot of disabled cars that were stuck in the snow. Those drivers attempting to circumvent traffic ended up using Manda, North Upper Truckee and other local roads but a new ordinance will try and alleviate those issues.

Changes on the way for Tahoe Paradise Park; New board member sought
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/20/2017 - 10:36pmIn the works since 2010, the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District is now officially a "recreation and park district." Governor Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 1023 into law that year, creating an expedited procedure for resort improvement districts to convert into community service districts, and in the case of Tahoe Paradise Park, into the recreation and park district.
That "expedited" procedure has taken almost six years for the Tahoe Paradise district to work out.
Navy veteran goes from streets to a home for Thanksgiving
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/20/2017 - 6:56pmA formerly homeless Navy veteran in El Dorado County now has a place to call home thanks to the kindness of many in the community.
Keith Lozier moved into Eskaton Lincoln Manor in Placerville Monday, the first home he has had in years.
A patrol sergeant with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) first came across Lozier as he was picking up trash in the Cameron Park Safeway parking lot. He told the sergeant that he was cleaning up trash “because it was the right thing to do.”

El Dorado County joins others in state to temporarily ban sales of cannabis
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/19/2017 - 1:44amThe El Dorado County Board of Supervisors have voted for a temporary ban of commercial licenses for both medical and recreational cannabis in El Dorado County with the exception of medical cannabis dispensaries allowed to operate under ordinance 4999.
At the same time, they voted to create a new ad hoc Cannabis Advisory Committee to study and create ballot measures for different cannabis commercial uses tied to
taxation for a local election.
Supervisor Sue Novasel, who represents the South Shore will join Supervisor Ranalli on the new committee.

In writing this letter, I am only expressing my own opinion and not that of

Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in the County are out of control. As is
evidenced by the number of residents complaining about noise, parking, trash,
over-occupancy, etc, it is time for our government representatives to act and
change the current ordinance to respect our rights to live in peaceful
neighborhoods.

Final step on $68 million public safety center approved for El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/17/2017 - 12:23amIn the works since 2014, the last hurdle for the new El Dorado County Public Safety Project was approved on Tuesday at the Board of Supervisor's meeting when they unanimously approved a $49 million contract to design and build a new public safety facility. Clark/Sullivan Construction and Broward Builders were awarded the contract to design and build the facility.
Kudos: First Responders team up with Cub Scout Pack 592

Scouts were able to see first-hand the tools and techniques that first responders use to keep the community safe and how they work together when someone needs help.
Update on recovered bodies at Fallen Leaf Lake

Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.
El Dorado County awarded DUI prosecution grant
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/12/2017 - 10:18pmThose arrested for DUI in El Dorado County, especially repeat offenders and those involved in fatal or injury crashes, can expect to face highly trained, specialized prosecutors, funded by a $195,677.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office will fund a Vertical Prosecution team that will work cases from arrest through conviction and sentencing.
New program for family and friends of those with mental health conditions

"We are delighted to be able to provide an educational experience for those that care deeply about a family member or friend in the community," said Jeanne Nelson, NAMI El Dorado County President. "In just four hours the participants may walk away with some tools and techniques that could directly make a positive difference in the recovery process."

Vacation rental scams through Craigslist continue in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.
Barton celebrates South Lake Tahoe non-profits and philanthropy

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.
Man found guilty in South Lake Tahoe assault, faces 150 years to life in prison

Measure C failing even with majority of voters approving of a tax increase

With a final tally of the precinct votes and some mail-ins received by 10:49 p.m., the "yes" votes totaled 54 percent, with the "no" votes getting 46 percent. The measure needed two-thirds to pass.
There may still be some late mail-ins to be counted and the vote has not been certified at this time.
Of the 9,889 registered voters, just 2215 ballots (22.4 percent) have been received tonight.

Meyers Area Plan could be adopted at upcoming meetings

The Meyers Area Plan is the comprehensive long-term plan for the Meyers Community and, if approved, will replace the original Meyers Community Plan (MCP) adopted in 1993. The MCP currently serves as the comprehensive land use and zoning plan for the community of Meyers, consistent with the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan and the El Dorado County General Plan. It was originally meant to last a decade, not the almost 25 years its been in place.
Tax increase to fix South Lake Tahoe roads to be determined Tuesday

Voters will decide if a one-half cent sales tax will be added in the town to provide approximately $2.5 million that will fix potholes and pave, repair, maintain local roads.

Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.
"Revenge Porn" gets man one year in prison
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 11:21amA man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.
Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/04/2017 - 7:00amIts election time and the only local issue is Measure C; an increase of one-half percent in local sales tax (excludes groceries and prescriptions) for a term of 15 years to fund road rehabilitation. I voted YES to the measure because there is no long term funding solution within the current budget or the foreseeable future. And, our roads are in terrible shape.
Five cases of viral meningitis in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/03/2017 - 3:58pmSeveral viral meningitis cases have been reported from Susanville and Reno to El Dorado County.
As of November 2, 2017 a total number of four confirmed cases have been identified at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs and one confirmed case has been identified at El Dorado High School in El Dorado.
The school district has notified parents of the situation and extra cleaning has been done at the schools. Public Health is working closely with school staff and has notified county health care providers.
South Tahoe Now: Why Measure C is needed now

El Dorado County may revamp VHR ordinance
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/02/2017 - 11:28pmAs with meetings concerning vacation rentals (VHRs) in the City of South Lake Tahoe, many residents from the county turned out to voice concerns with the El Dorado County's Tax Collector C.L. Cherie Raffety Wednesday.
What was different than the City's meetings, Raffety limited how the public could speak about noise, parking, occupancy, hot tubs, zoning and other issues they have in their neighborhoods. She broke up the issues and heard concerns, one subject at a time.
Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/02/2017 - 10:25pmThe updated Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project was presented to the community Thursday night, with changes incorporated after input from the public at their first meeting August 17, 2017.
Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.
Student leaders sought for new NAMI club at STHS
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/02/2017 - 9:06amThere is a brand new club at South Tahoe High School that needs the help of student leaders to bring awareness about mental health to their fellow students on campus. Together, the students will work to end the stigma and made it understood that its okay to seek help, and where and when to find it.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of El Dorado County has spearheaded the new club which is called "STHS NAMI On Campus/Brain Health Leadership Club."
