The Commission on Aging for El Dorado County is currently seeking a new member to fill one vacancy. The Commission strives to attain a balanced geographic representation and applicants are being sought from all areas of the County, including South Lake Tahoe. Preference will be given to individuals aged 60 years and older.

Community round table discussion on EDC budget

The El Dorado County Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Don Ashton has been going from community to community, holding round table discussions about the upcoming budget for the county.

All residents from the South Shore are invited to a round table discussion about the budget Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at the California Conservation Corps Tahoe Center at 1949 Apache Avenue in Meyers from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

El Dorado County may take 2% TOT hike to the voters

Revenue will need to increase in El Dorado County in order to complete a list of needed projects including those for repaired roads and economic development, both items that are affected by tourism.

The El Dorado County Board o Supervisors will start the discussion at the their next meeting on March 13 to the possibility of taking a tax increase to the voters in 2018, one the voters will benefit from but won't have to pay for.

EDC Supervisors to vote on purchase of old Bijou Post Office for new office space

The old Bijou Post Office on Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe may soon be home to new El Dorado County offices. This property is across the street from their current government center at the corner of Takela Drive and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

During the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, there will be a vote on the agenda item regarding purchase of the property for $1,250,000. Supervisor Sue Novasel said they have been putting money aside to be used in an El Dorado Center Campus in South Lake Tahoe. The project includes a major remodel of both buildings.

Juvenile arrested after allegedly making threats at South Tahoe Middle School

A South Tahoe Middle School student was arrested after allegedly making threats to bring a gun to the school's dance Friday night and harm students.

Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) made contact with the young man at his home. The residence was searched and at this time it is believed that he did not have access to any firearms.

Due to the nature of the threats, and the number of other students who were placed in fear by them, the male juvenile was arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Juvenile Treatment Center on Criminal Threats, a felony.

Man convicted of attempted murder after shooting in Meyers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - On March 7, 2018 after a two week trial, a South Lake Tahoe jury convicted Ignacio Madrigal Arizaga of Galt, California of Attempted Murder; Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle; Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and, Illegal Possession of Ammo by a Convicted Felon.

He faces 41 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced on April 2, 2018.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel held a Town Hall meeting on February 28, providing a forum for residents, law enforcement and staff to discuss solutions. One suggestion that came out of that meeting was put into place on Sunday, March 4 and was fairly successful.

This series will be held weekly on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. beginning April 16, 2018, and ending May 21, 2018, at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

The educational series will give instruction and support for people who provide care for a family member or friend aged 60 years or greater.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 7 years in prison for DUI crash

South Lake Tahoe resident Patrick Bryan Baker was sentenced to seven years in state prison after he pleaded no contest to one felony count driving with a blood alcohol level over .08% and causing injury.

El Dorado County VHR meeting canceled due to weather

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has rescheduled the special vacation home rental (VHR) meeting, trying for the third time to get the public together to discuss the county's revamping of their ordinance to address concerns.

A meeting is now set for Saturday, March 24 at South Tahoe Middle School's Multipurpose room from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

On February 1, the first meeting for the discussion of the Board of Supervisors had to be postponed due to an overcapacity crowd filled the South Lake Tahoe Council Chambers and airport.

Tahoe Search and Rescue locate two skiers at Heavenly

Two skiers who went out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort Sunday were found safe and uninjured at approximately 6:50 p.m. March 4, 2018.

The pair were in waist deep snow and had trouble getting out according to El Dorado County Sheriff Sgt. Anthony Prencipe. They called for help and Tahoe Search and Rescue responded at about 5:30 p.m.

Prencipe said they two skiers, whose names and hometowns were not released, were uninjured and able to ski out on their own once help arrived.

Choices for Children seeking child care providers in South Lake Tahoe

If you are a parent looking for child care, you have probably encountered some challenges. There is currently a shortage of child care slots in El Dorado County. Many child care facilities who offer care are full and have waiting lists. This situation is very frustrating for parents and their employers. In order to work, parents are forced to juggle child care between friends, neighbors, and family members which can often be inconsistent and unreliable. Parents may also be forced to consider a child care situation of questionable quality.

County's ad hoc cannabis committee meetings announced

El Dorado County's ad hoc Cannabis Committee will have eight public meetings between March 5 and May 14 as they develop a new ordinance. All meetings will take place in the County Supervisor's chambers located at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

El Dorado County Sheriff's lieutenant moves to the District Attorney's Office

A former El Dorado County Sheriff's lieutenant is now the chief investigator for the District Attorney's office. Jeff Dreher was sworn in during a ceremony on Friday.

El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini, who was present for the swearing in ceremony said, "Although this is a loss for the Sheriff's Office it is a significant gain for the DA's office and all of law enforcement throughout El Dorado County."

Chain controls and road closures around Lake Tahoe

With over a foot of new snow Friday morning, crews are working to clear the roadways and area highways have been closed a few times due to collisions, heavy snow and avalanche controls.

Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from Douglas County and El Dorado County save lives each year, and many times they have to respond to adverse conditions just as was the case when they were called out to Mott Canyon after two skiers were lost last week after skiing out of bounds at Heavenly.

El Dorado County VHR meeting postponed due to weather

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisor's vacation home rental meeting rescheduled for Saturday, March 3 has been postponed, this time due to the blizzard conditions.

This meeting was to be a continuation of the February 1 meeting in South Lake Tahoe held to dicuss the county's new vacation rental ordinance. That meeting had to end after just a few minutes due to over a capacity crowd, almost double of the 112 people allowed in the SLT council chambers where the meeting was held.

Meyers Area Plan approved by TRPA, on to County Supervisors

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved El Dorado County’s Meyers Area Plan, the fifth local area plan approved at Lake Tahoe to implement the 2012 Regional Plan.

Body found in South Lake Tahoe; Police investigating

6:00 p.m. 2/26/18: The man who was found dead on the side of Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe has been identified as local resident Douglas Knapp.

The El Dorado County coroner's office said they will be doing an autopsy and at this time they do not have a cause of death for the 55-year-old man.

There is no indication of foul play or that Knapp was hit by a vehicle, according to South Lake Tahoe Police.

The body of a middle-aged man was found in South Lake Tahoe Sunday morning.

SAR volunteers aid in search of Bay Area man missing in Yosemite

A weekend hike in Yosemite turned into a six-day long ordeal for a Bay Area man this week.

Oakland resident Alan Chow, 36, had his backpacking gear and wilderness permit when he set out on a solo hike Saturday, February 17 on the loop trail in Yosemite's northern wilderness area above Hetch Hetchy, about a mile from O'Shaughnessy Dam.

He became disoriented and lost his way.

SAR volunteers spend night with skier near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Douglas County, El Dorado County and Washoe County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, paramedics and Blackhawk rescue helicopters all assisted in the location and retrieval of two skiers who went missing at Heavenly Mountain Resort Thursday evening.

Douglas County 911 operators received a call on February 22 at 5:00 p.m. from two male adults who said they were lost at the resort. They said they had some water, but were wet and cold, their cell phone batteries were diminished, and one of the skiers suffered from a medical condition.

Free consulting available for South Lake Tahoe small businesses

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Small businesses in the South Lake Tahoe area are now able to receive mall business consulting through a partnership between Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) and the Sierra Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

Former El Dorado County judge facing disciplinary charges

The Commission on Judicial Performance has initiated disciplinary proceedings against recently retired El Dorado County Judge Steve Bailey. Bailey is now seeking the GOP nomination for state attorney general.

Steven Bailey faces 11 counts of ethical wrongdoing dating to his time on the bench, including placing defendants in a private-sector alcohol monitoring program without disclosing that the provider employs his son, according to the judicial watchdog agency.

Four potential candidates so far for El Dorado County Supervisor 5th District

Candidate season has already started for not only the State of California but also El Dorado County.

So far, for the El Dorado County Supervisor representing Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoma and Pollock Pines (District 5) four candidates have taken out papers.

Current Supervisor Sue Novasel, local businessman Ken Curtzwiler, former Supervisor Norma Santiago, and transportation technology and land use expert Jeffrey Spencer have all taken out papers during the filing period which began February 12.

Solutions being sought to alleviate tourist traffic in Meyers

Holiday traffic leaving South Lake Tahoe this weekend created another bottleneck in Meyers as well as on side roads throughout the area from those attempting to find a quicker getaway. The choices they made Monday created a three-hour drive from the Y in South Lake Tahoe to areas in Meyers.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit is designed to handle 1,200 cars per hour without any issues, but those numbers dropped Monday, February 19. Just how much they dropped is unknown as the traffic counters normally placed over the roadway are removed for snow removal.

Holiday traffic and slick roads keeping tow trucks and law enforcement busy

North Upper Truckee and Sawmill Road have become parking lots Monday afternoon, reminiscent of 2017's problems of ill-equipped vehicles on snow covered back roads.

The California Highway Patrol and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office have spent Monday responding to several calls in the Meyers area of cars stuck on side roads as they attempt to circumvent the backlog of traffic on Highway 50.

Along with those issues there have been several accidents and as of 3:30 p.m, State Route 88 may have to close due to a crash

South Lake Tahoe's Sierra Boulevard study released for public review

The Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project is slated to start construction as soon as the building season in South Lake Tahoe gets underway in 2018. As part of the process, an The Initial Sturdy/Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) is now up for review and public comment. Comments can be made until March 26, 2018.

City of South Lake Tahoe sues fire truck company

In 2014, City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) took possession of a 2013 model Ferrara ladder truck at the tune of almost $1,050,000. It was purchased to replace the aging ladder truck SLTFR had from 1982 and paid for with funds from California sales tax money devoted to public safety.

County business property statements mailed out incorrectly

The El Dorado County Assessor today discovered that Business Property Statements (571-L) mailed last week to businesses in the County included a return envelope with a Napa County address.

“We caught the printing vendor’s mistake early and are taking steps to resolve the error and ensure that filed statements are properly processed,” said County Assessor Karl Weiland. “The Napa County Assessor’s office has agreed to forward to my office any El Dorado County statements they receive.”

Weiland said less than 500 statements were mailed out with the wrong return envelopes.

Tahoma murder suspect identified

LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Sunday's suspicious death in Tahoma has officially been ruled a homicide by El Dorado County Sheriff’s Detectives.

Jeremy David Virgo, 47, was arrested for murder after a chase ensued after deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to shots being fired in the area of Timber Wolf Drive and Alder Street in the West Shore community of Tahoma.

Death in Tahoma leads to chase and arrest at Homewood Ski Resort

Three still hospitalized in Reno after South Lake Tahoe vehicle collision

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Three victims from Saturday's head-on collision on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe are still hospitalized at Renown Medical Center.

According to Officer Jeff Gartner of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), he called Renown Monday morning and was told that all three were still hospitalized with their injuries.

Head-on collision in South Lake Tahoe sends six to area hospitals

Update 6:45 p.m.: The driver of one of the vehicles, a 29-year-old woman from Stateline, Nevada has been arrested on charges of a Felony DUI and is in the El Dorado County Jail on $125,000 bail.

She was driving a Range Rover eastbound when, for reasons unknown at this time, she traveled into the westbound lane, striking a BMW with five occupants, ages 19-31, all from the Bay Area. The Range Rover was traveling about 40 mph at the time of impact according to the CHP. This is the speed limit at that area of Pioneer Trail.

Student arrested after making threats at El Dorado County middle school

A student at Marina Village Middle School in El Dorado Hills was arrested Friday after making threats and threatening the safety of the school.

On February 2, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified of the threats. Upon receiving the information, deputies worked with school staff to ensure the safety of our schools and determine if the threat was credible. The suspect was identified and interviewed. Several witnesses were also identified and interviewed.

VHR meeting postponed after over capacity crowd attends

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting held in South Lake Tahoe had to come to an early end Thursday after a City fire official deemed the over 150 people crammed into the airport council chambers too many over the maximum occupancy of 112 to be safe.

Approximately 300 people filled the airport, all wanting a chance to participate in the County's discussion of amending their vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance. Those not in the council chambers filled the airport lobby.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE CALIF. - A 35-year-old California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Reno, Nevada.

Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.
