Law enforcement searching for paroled sex offender in Meyers

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a phone call Thursday, alerting them of a convicted sex offender in Meyers who had cut off his ankle monitoring device.

Deputies searched for 25-year-old Alexander Paul Childs in the area but were not successful. Deputies have been on the lookout for him and EDSO has notified surrounding law enforcement agencies as well.

The anonymous caller told EDSO that Childs had called her and said he'd been without his ankle device for about a month and that he wanted to leave Meyers and head to Sacramento.

Placerville murder suspect arrested

Placerville murder suspect Bernardo Castillo was taken into custody early Friday morning in El Centro, Calif.

Castillo, 24, is accused of killing 49-year-old Silvia Castillo of Placerville and stabbing a four-year-old multiple times on Tuesday, June 13. An arrest warrant was issued immediately, and photos of the suspect and his car were distributed.

California Tahoe Conservancy gives over $400k to West Shore forest health

LAKE TAHOE - The California Tahoe Conservancy Board today authorized $414,074 to the California Department of Parks and Recreation for projects that improve forest health and reduce the risk of wildfire at Tahoe State Recreation Area and Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. The funding is the first allocation of more than $6.8 million in Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act funds awarded to the Conservancy at last year’s Presidential Summit.

Murder suspect arrested in South Lake Tahoe

A Sacramento area woman was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday on an arrest warrant out of Placer County for the murder of a Sacramento man.

Raelyn Bergsten, 20, was arrested without incident by South Lake Tahoe Police officers.

Bergsten and three others have all been arrested and charged in the connection with the May 26 shooting death of Tu Duc Nguyen, the Placer County Sheriff's Office said.

Nguyen's body was found in a field on Friday, May 26, near Sunset Boulevard West, in the unincorporated area of Placer County. He had been shot numerous times.

Roads, mental health and seniors focus of next El Dorado County BOS meeting

There will be three presentations at the next El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on June 20 that pertain to fiscal year 2017-18 budget. They are required to approve it by June 30 each year.

"Every year, the County’s Chief Administrator provides a Recommended Budget to the Board of Supervisors for their consideration," said Chief Administrative Officer, Don Ashton. "It is but one step along the path to having an Adopted Budget approved by the Board in September.”

Socioeconomic study on South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals released

When the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted on a new Vacation Rental Ordinance in 2015 they also promised to hire a consultant to prepare a socioeconomic study on the impact vacation home rentals (VHRs) have on the community.

The results of the study were presented to the City Council and the public during a special meeting on Tuesday.

Woman dead, child stabbed in El Dorado County; Search on for suspect

6/14 update 4:00 p.m. - The victim from yesterday’s homicide has been identified as 49-year-old Silvia Castillo of Placerville. The four year old girl who was stabbed multiple times had emergency surgery and is expected to survive.

The search continues for Dan Pham, the Bay Area man who went missing on Thursday, June 8 after embarking on a kayak trip from Lester Beach towards Emerald Bay. The search was suspended for two days due to bad weather but boats were back on the lake Monday to search for Pham.

Kayaker reported missing in Lake Tahoe

The search has been suspended for a man who was reported missing near Lester Beach, north of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

On June 8 at 9:15 a.m., Pham Dan Vu Thanh (who goes by Dan), called a friend to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.

Highway 50 at Kyburz closed due to mudslide

5:00 p.m. - A section of Highway 50 in El Dorado County is now closed after new slide activity at the location pushed a heavy amount of debris onto the roadway. Crews are in the process of putting the signage up.

El Dorado County Sheriff looking for gas-masked bandit

A man wearing a hard hart and full respirator walked into two banks in El Dorado County on Tuesday afternoon, making off with money from one.

At about 4:30 p.m. on June 6, the suspect pulled up to the El Dorado Hills branch of Golden One Credit Union driving a white F150. He got out and entered the bank with a gun, wearing the hard hat and gas mask along with sunglasses and a reflective green vest. For an unknown reason he left the building as quickly as he entered.

Crash knocks out power to 2067 customers in South Lake Tahoe

A driver at the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe ran into the guy-wire for a power pole, cutting power to over 2,000 Liberty Utilities customers Tuesday afternoon.

The driver was not injured.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police Departments responded to the one vehicle crash after getting the call at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday June 6.

Power was knocked out in South Lake Tahoe at 12:46 p.m. but was restored by 2:45 p.m. A new power pole was placed on Pioneer Trail by Liberty Utilities crews.

Nevada State Fair this weekend, El Dorado County Fair follows

Area residents and visitors can enjoy two big fairs with rides, music and exhibits. The 2017 Nevada State Fair runs from June 8 to June 11, and the El Dorado County Fair goes from June 15-18.

The 2017 Nevada State Fair returns this week to Carson City bringing four days of fun, entertainment, carnival rides, culture, music and more to Mills Park.

Lake Tahoe to hit 81 Tuesday, chance of rain at end of week

In typical June fashion, the forecast brings both warm temperatures and rain, and even a slight chance of upper level snow this week for Lake Tahoe. KOLO-TV said Monday morning that snow could hit elevations above 7500 feet on Friday, but in the meantime its warm and clear.

Due to the warm weather, there is a Flood Advisory in place until June 9 for El Dorado County for streams around the South Lake Tahoe region due to snowmelt. Some minor flooding is possible along Heavenly Creek, Trout Creek, Cold Creek, and the Upper Truckee River.

Tragedy averted on Upper Truckee River Saturday

A Concord, California man enjoying a kayak ride on the Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe had a near miss with tragedy Saturday after his kayak flipped, catching him in some bushes.

With an increase of $4.5 million to CalPers in 2018, changes to some social service programs, the impact of prison realignment, a "challenging" budget for El Dorado County is now available for public review. It is going to the Board of Supervisors (BOS) as well and they will have future meetings on the subject.

Teen who died near Vikingsholm identified

A 14-year-old from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota has been identified as the victim in Wednesday's fall at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe.

Chloe Conn fell approximately 50-feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm Trail at about noon on May 31.

No other details about the fall, or who Conn was with in Lake Tahoe have been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

SMUD planning to expand cloud seeding over the Sierra

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is planning to more than double their current cloud seeding program over the American River watershed from the current 190 square miles to 444 square miles.

Since 1968, SMUD has been involved in the practice of cloud seeding in El Dorado, Amador, and Placer counties to benefit electricity generation in the Upper American River Project (UARP) in Eldorado National Forest.

Teen dies after fall at Lake Tahoe

A 14-year-old female died on Wednesday, May 31 after she fell approximately 50 feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm trail at Emerald Bay.

Just after noon, On May 31, 2017, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received the call and responded along with CHP, Cal-Star, CA State Parks, Lake Valley Fire and South Tahoe EMS personnel. An off-duty law enforcement officer who was recreating in the area began CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of on-duty first responders.

As an active leader in the South Lake Tahoe chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, I work closely with family members who have loved ones with mental health issues. For many, one of the hardest times was learning about their child, partner, or friend’s diagnosis and not knowing what do next. Some were shamed for not addressing their loved one’s needs sooner and others were told they were too protective or doing too much.

As a response to the movie and how students will react to it, Lake Tahoe Unified School District intervention counselors will be holding a community panel discussion called "300 Reasons Why Not" on Tuesday, May 30 at South Tahoe Middle School's Multi-Purpose Room starting at 6:00 p.m.

El Dorado County gymnastics coach arrested for sexual abuse

Keith Willette of Cameron Park was arrested by deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) on May 25, 2017 on suspicion of sexually molesting a minor between 1999 and 2004.

The victim contacted EDSO on May 18 and reported the 54-year-old gymnastics coach had sexually abused her for multiple years

Willette was a gymnastics instructor in El Dorado and Sacramento Counties, as well in Ohio, Minnesota, and Washington. He is also a professional photographer.

240 building allocations released by TRPA to Lake Tahoe jurisdictions

In a unanimous decision during their May 24 meeting, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board voted to release 240 housing allocations to jurisdictions in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Farmers markets return to South Lake Tahoe

The snow has melted (most places) at lake level and spring is finally here, so that means it's time for farmers markets in South Lake Tahoe.

First market to open is the Lake Tahoe Market on Wednesday, May 24 at Kahle Community Park, 236 Kingsbury Grade near the state line from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They will be open on Wednesdays through the summer.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

The first South Lake Tahoe Police Department community gathering was a successful one on Saturday as the 50th anniversary of the department was celebrated with hundreds of people at Lakeview Commons. There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.

Going above and beyond the call of duty was recognized with awards to both staff members and the public.

El Dorado County cyclist wins 7th stage of Amgen

After cycling for seven days and 583 miles across California, Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s George Bennett (NZL) claimed the 2017 Amgen Tour of California race championship today in Pasadena with an overall time of 22 hours, 54 minutes and 38 seconds at America’s largest professional cycling stage race.

SLTPD 50th anniversary to have boat rides, K-9s, Calstar, BBQ, concert and awards

The community is in for a treat on Saturday, May 20 as the South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50 years of service with a party at Lakeview Commons from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Locals and visitors, young and old, can ride on the SLTPD boat, see the department's K-9s, watch a demonstration over the water with CalStar at 3:00 p.m., watch how the drone assists in rescues, an awards ceremony that will honor three citizens as well as staff at 4:00 p.m., and a free BBQ. There is also a free concert on the beach.

Two plead guilty to stealing recreation fees

Two suspects have pled guilty to stealing from fee tubes on the Eldorado National Forest and other sites in El Dorado County.

Brian Lisanti and Deseree Tougas entered the pleas in El Dorado Superior Court after a multi-agency investigation uncovered the crimes.

Food Bank returns to SLT with food supplies and new location

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will return to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the parking lot of St. Theresa's Catholic Church.

Bags of emergency supplemental groceries will be distributed to qualified recipients. The Mobile Food Pantry makes stops in remote areas of the county from SLT to Placerville. While in town they will also stop by the Family Resource Center and Bread & Broth to drop off food supplies to those agencies.

Public safety memorial wall to be dedicated in South Lake Tahoe

The public is invited to the dedication of a new public safety memorial wall at Happy Homestead Cemetery on Friday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Local law enforcement and fire departments will be participating, with South Lake Tahoe Mayor Austin Sass, El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel, fire and police chiefs speaking during the ceremony. A large contingent of agency equipment is expected along with honor guards and traditional bell ringing.

Four car collision on SR89 sends three to hospital

Three people were injured after a head-on collision on State Route 89 near Cascade Estates on Saturday, May 13.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Subaru WRX was being driven northbound on SR-89 near Cascade when the car overheated. The driver pulled to the right shoulder and called his father for assistance. The dad arrived in his Volkswagon Touareg and he parked on the right shoulder behind his son’s WRX, out of the traffic lanes with its hazard lights on.
