South Tahoe High grad killed in single car accident near Pope Beach

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol continue to investigate a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a South Lake Tahoe teen early Saturday morning.

According to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers, 19-year-old Jillian Pruitt was the lone occupant in a car that collided with a tree on State Route 89 at 3:40 a.m. March 26, 2016.

Byers said the accident is still under investigation and few details are available at this time. He said that circumstance of the crash are making it complex.

South Lake Tahoe man seriously injured in felony hit and run in Meyers

A South Lake Tahoe man was hit by a car on Saturday night, resulting in serious injuries and an arrest for felony hit and run.

Scott Murphy, 26, was walking along the eastbound side of Highway 50, east of Apache Avenue, talking to his girlfriend on the phone at about 9:45 p.m. on March 26 according to the California Highway Patrol. A BMW driven by Roberto Luna, 21, was also heading east and, for unknown reasons, allowed the right front side of his car to hit Murphy. Luna, of San Francisco, Calif., was driving an estimated 50 mph, ten miles above the posted speed limit.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Members of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) handed out checks to 22 different project that are created by non-profits to serve the women and children of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Student arrested at South Tahoe High after bringing a knife to school

An 18-year-old South Tahoe High School student was arrested on campus Friday for bringing a knife to school.

"There was no immediate threat to our students thanks to vigilance of school personnel," said STHS Principal Chad Houck.

The student was booked into El Dorado County Jail on a felony charge of bringing a weapon to school. He has since been released. His bail had been set at $10,000 but it is unknown what he posted.

Firestorm surrounding ambulance service in South Lake Tahoe

In the mix you have El Dorado County, the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Valley Fire Protection and the Cal Tahoe JPA. More importantly, and most likely the reason for the passionate responses from all involved, the mix also contains the safety of the public.

On March 15, 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe sent a letter to the JPA, stating their intent to pull out of the agency that was created in 2001 to supply ambulance service to the City and the County and a portion of Alpine County.

Jail inmates create colorful Easter eggs for South Lake Tahoe kids

Can you imagine dying 4,000 eggs for your family's Easter egg hunt? Probably not as many of us may have had enough after two dozen, but that is exactly what local inmates are tasked with.

Each year, the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club hosts a community egg hunt at Lake Tahoe Community College, and for the last ten years the inmates at the El Dorado County Jail have been coloring the hard boiled eggs for the event.

Normally the kitchen crew at the jail both boils the eggs and colors them, but due to a staffing shortage at the jail they could only color them.

Suspects in South Lake Tahoe murder plead not guilty

Two of the men suspected of killing 40-year-old Dennis Wright, Jr. in South Lake Tahoe appeared before Judge Suzanne Kingsbury in El Dorado County Superior Court on Monday.

Tristan Batten, 18, and Harvest Davidson, 20, both entered a not guilty plea.

El Dorado Savings in Georgetown robbed at gunpoint

The El Dorado Savings Bank in Georgetown, Calif., was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown man on Monday, March 21. 2016 at 12:49 p.m.

The suspect is identified as being a white male adult, was wearing blue jeans, blue rain coat and a San Francisco 49ers ball cap. He was armed with a black pistol and seen leaving the area in a red Dodge Durango, most likely a 2004-09 model.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies, detectives and CSI personnel, along with allied law enforcement, responded to the bank and interviewed numerous employees, customers and witnesses.

Elsa is about 3 years old and looking for a home. She was found injured in a snow bank by a motel employee, and was taken to the vet. Elsa is now ready to be adopted!

Youth use drums to grow while at Juvenile Treatment Center

At an event held at the Juvenile Treatment Center in South Lake Tahoe, five youth from the Challenge Program recently performed for their families, other detained youth at the facility, Juvenile Service Council members and community members.

Tahoe Tot Spot changes owners, celebrates with St. Patrick's Day party

A South Lake Tahoe couple has taken over the ownership at Tahoe Tot Spot, a place where the younger set can enjoy activities, interactions with other kids, crafts and more.

Julie Pardysz was relocating to Colorado and had the business up for sale. The Tot Spot was on the verge of having to close as no buyers were coming forward. At the last minute, Jen and Chris Bloch made an offer to keep the doors open.

STAR looking for volunteers in El Dorado County

The Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees (S.T.A.R.) Program in El Dorado County is looking to bolster their volunteer corps. STAR is comprised of senior citizens who are utilized to enhance vital crime prevention services in the community. The STARs conduct patrols in specially marked STAR vehicles, functioning as the eyes and ears of the Sheriff’s Department, reporting any suspicious activity observed. The S.T.A.R. Program is a Crime Prevention Program exercising proactive law enforcement principles.

Judge hands down sentence to man who killed bear in South Lake Tahoe

"These are always tough cases," said El Dorado County Judge Suzanne Kingsbury Friday as she handed down an unexpected sentence to the 78-year-old man who killed a bear near his South Lake Tahoe home on July 10, 2015.

Gilbert Alan Wetenkamp pleaded no contest on March 11, 2016 to the misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking of a bear.

Full closure of Highway 50 in El Dorado Hills early Sunday

On Sunday, March 20, the Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Closures are as follows:

Mobile food bank to be in South Lake Tahoe; Volunteers needed

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be back in South Lake Tahoe at the American Legion Hall on Wednesday, March 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to distribute food to those in need of emergency supplemental groceries.

They are also looking for volunteers from the community to assist from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will be assisting in handing out food and signing people in. Attempted beer theft in South Lake Tahoe leads to two arrested on felony charges

Two South Lake Tahoe men were arrested Monday night on charges of robbery and conspiracy after attempting to steal four-12 packs of beer from a local grocery store.

South Lake Tahoe police officers responded to a call from the Safeway on Lake Tahoe Blvd. at 11:02 p.m. on March 14, 2016 after a physical altercation occurred when two store employees and two citizens tried to stop 19-year-old Jose Rodriguez and 18-year-old Jose Romero as they allegedly attempted to leave the store with the beer without paying.

Pets of the Week: Spike and Trinity

We have two "Pets of the Week" this week, Trinity and Spike. They are a 7-year-old brother and sister pair and we want to keep them together.

They are declawed on their front paws. They have lived with dogs and other cats.

Spike is a little shy whilst Trinity is more of a player and cuddler.

South Lake Tahoe man pleads "no contest" to killing bear last summer

The 78-year old man responsible for killing a bear found off Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe on July 10, 2015 has pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking of a bear.

Appearing in El Dorado County court Friday, Gilbert Wetenkamp admitted to killing the bear that he said in July caused damage to his home over several incidents, and that he feared for his life.

Clean up criminal records at an upcoming free clinic

You may be able to clean up your criminal record at an upcoming clinic if you were convicted of misdemeanors or felonies in El Dorado County over one year ago that resulted in jail time, alternative sentencing, or probation.

At the free clinic, you will receive information on whether you are eligible to petition the Court for a dismissal of certain convictions in California. If you were convicted in El Dorado County and successfully completed all the terms of your sentence, you will receive instructions on how to “clean up” your record.

South Shore Business Walk March 15-16 to survey employer needs

Volunteers will be canvassing the community from Meyers to Round Hill this week to assess the employment needs of local businesses including their current employment situation, determine future needs, and ensure Tahoe can attract and retain talented workers for a variety of occupations.

Between 2003 and 2013, Lake Tahoe experienced a steady decline in jobs, with 5,500 jobs lost. Since then, there are several factors affecting the prosperity and sustainability of both the current and future workforce and economy.

Educational series on caring for the aging presented by El Dorado County

A six-week educational series that will provide support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member of friend over the age of 60 will be presented by El Dorado County starting April 18, 2016.

The "Aging & Caregiver" series will be held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

Carson City man arrested on slew of charges in El Dorado County

An early morning armed robbery in Camino, Calif., led to the arrest of 22-year-old Aaron Friesen of Carson City on charges of robbery, vehicle theft and on an outstanding felony warrant for domestic violence.

At 5:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, the Wine County Station just off Highway 50 was robbed at gunpoint with the suspect getting away in a vehicle. An alert witness at the scene gave law enforcement detailed information about both the suspect and the vehicle used in the getaway.

City adds another location for electric car owners to charge up

Visitors to South Lake Tahoe have several options to charge their cars, with the newest location added in the City owned Heavenly Village parking garage.

The City partnered with ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging station company, and added a system on the first floor of the garage near the elevator. Users will need to have an account with ChargePoint.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy on paid leave has third DUI

John "Tony" Broadfoot, a deputy with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on March 4 on charges of driving under the influence after an accident in the Shingle Springs area. This was Broadfoot's third DUI arrest in as many months.

On December 8, 2015, Broadfoot was placed on administrative leave after being arrested on DUI charges by the CHP in South Lake Tahoe. Then on February 25, 2016, he was arrested, again by CHP officers, when found to be under the influence after rolling his vehicle near Ice House Road and Highway 50.

Pepper is a super sweet 18-month-old who loves children and babies. She walks nicely on leash and loves to play with other dogs. She also does well keeping the cats and squirrels out of the yard so she does need to be in a cat free home.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief: Updates on crime, cleanup and murder case

Great news! Compared to last year, our violent crime rate is down 41% (from 112 occurrences in 2014 to 66 in 2015). The news is not all good. Our property crime rate is up 6% (from 516 in 2014 to 548 in 2015). This was not unexpected as we reported on a significant upward trend in property crime 6 months ago. Total crime is down 2.2% over last year.

Missing Spinoni Italiano dogs may have been spotted in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe Now and Carson Now carried the story of a helicopter search for missing Spinoni Italiano dogs near Carson City, and now reports of the two pets being spotted in South Lake Tahoe are coming in.

On Friday night, owners Stacey and Lorne Bell were walking the dogs, Mara and Adele, in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.

Man's body found off Timber Cove Pier in South Lake Tahoe

3/3/16 Update: The man who died off the shore of Lake Tahoe on Monday has been identified as David Mark Flynn. The cause of death has not been released.

The body of a 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was pulled out of the water by the Timber Cove Pier Monday afternoon.

At 3:28 p.m. on February 29, 2016, South Lake Tahoe Police received a call of a drowning victim in the water at the Timber Cove Pier, just off Connolly Beach and behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat & Lodge.

When officers arrived, the found the local man deceased in a few feet of water.

Missing ski instructor Carson May found in five feet of snow

Two search and rescue teams training in the snow at the Sugar Bowl Resort on Monday found the body of missing ski instructor Carson May.

The El Dorado County Search and Rescue dog teams, along with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team, located May under five feet of snow in an avalanche prone out-of-bounds area at the resort.

Carson May, 23, was a ski instructor at the resort and went missing Jan. 15, 2016. He was not found despite an intensive, four-day search by dozens of volunteers and law enforcement officers.

Body of missing Lake Tahoe woman found at Emerald Bay

A Search and Rescue team from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office found the body of Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman who was reported missing on February 17.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office had been searching for the 69-year-old woman when her car was found parked at Inspiration Point overlooking Emerald Bay on February 19. At that time, the car was covered in a foot of snow from recent snowfall.

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

2:45 p.m. 2/28/16 update:

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.

At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Caltrans looking at roundabout or traffic signal in Meyers

Due to the unsafe intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89, Caltrans is looking at safety improvements in the area to reduce collisions, and their severity. At this time, the preferred option for Caltrans is adding a roundabout at the intersection to improve conditions after a reported seven accidents at the intersection.

The estimated $3.1 million project is scheduled for construction in 2018-19. It is currently in the environmental phase, with the environmental document scheduled to be finalized in November 2016.

Two more suspects identified in South Lake Tahoe homicide

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has identified two more suspects in the January 30, 2016 murder of Dennis Wright, Jr. at the Beverly Lodge.

Ex-firefighter from Placerville sent to jail for five years for arson

Benjamin Cunha, 33, of Placerville, was sentenced Tuesday, February 23, 2016 to five years in prison for arson after being found guilty of setting at least 30 wildland fires during the summers of 2006 and 2007.

Two of these fires burned onto federal land. Cunha indicated that his motivation for setting the fires was to overcome boredom, to earn overtime pay for fighting the fires, and to impress his peers.

United States District Judge John A. Mendez also ordered Cunha to pay $246,862 in restitution to Cal Fire, his former employer.

Missing woman's car found near Emerald Bay

The car belonging to Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman missing since February 15, has been found near Emerald Bay, but there is still no sign of the 69-year-old woman.

The California Highway Patrol located the vehicle in the area of Inspiration Point, overlooking the bay near South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue team, along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue are searching the area where Batchelor's car was found.
