Mental Health Forum focuses on unmet needs of the community

El Dorado County has 2.5 times the state average of maternity mental issues. The domestic violence rate in El Dorado County is 1.5 times higher than the state average. More people are living in the county with mental issues than ever before.
A day long forum of mental health care providers, agencies, medical professionals and other community members was held in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday in order to find what needs are being met, and unmet, in the area.
22% of stores tested sold cigarettes to teens in El Dorado County

County health and law enforcement officials released the results of a recent operation where trained youth volunteers, aged 14-17, went into stores to purchase cigarettes. Of the 142 retail stores the youth went into, 32 stores sold them tobacco.
Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The two Lake Tahoe stages cover a total of 124 miles with the first on Friday, May 8, circumnavigating the Lake; the second is two-laps through South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, Calif., the town seven miles west of South Shore on Saturday, May 9.
South Lake Tahoe to be start and finish line for Amgen Tour women's race

Fourteen teams will take part in the three stage cycling competition which will have both start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort's California Main Lodge
The race is sanctioned by Union Cycliste International, denoting the highest level for a non-World Cup event.

On February 28, 2015, the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Valley Division Recruitment Unit will be hosting a “Law Enforcement Recruitment Event” at the California Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento. The CHP is currently looking to recruit both women and men throughout the state to become CHP Officers. This recruitment event is designed to educate women and men on the endless opportunities and benefits associated with a career with the CHP. Officers will also be available to answer any questions regarding career opportunities and the CHP recruitment process.
Noise issues fuel review of SLT vacation home rental ordinance

With the large number of visitors "living" in the area neighborhoods next to full time residents their impact has created tension over noise, trash and parking issues.
In the City limits there are currently 1,574 houses that have a permit to be operated as a vacation home. In comparison there are about 15-20% that number in vacation cities Santa Cruz and Napa.
Fees to be charges for required stormwater commercial inspections
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/17/2015 - 9:25pmThe City wants to recover some of the fees involved in the enforcement of a state mandated stormwater program which requires them to ensure commercial businesses are not discharging waste or pollutants into the storm drain system.
Keeping grease, oil and other contaminants out of the system is the goal of the program. Jason Burke, the City's Stormwater Program Coordinator, told the City Council on Tuesday that he will provide outreach and education to the high profile businesses that use grease and oil on a daily basis.

Fact. When sending or receiving text messaging behind the wheel, a driver’s eyes are off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, equivalent to driving the length of a football field at 65 miles per hours.
Fact. The likelihood of crashes dramatically rise when your actions require a combination of visual, manual and cognitive attention
Tahoe Valley Area Plan one step closer to adoption

John Hitchcock, the City of South Lake Tahoe Planning Manager, gave the Council another presentation on the status of the plan and where things stand as of today during Tuesday's City Council meeting.
First proposed in the early 1990's, the resurrection of the Tahoe Valley Area plan made great strides towards adoption in 2014 with Hitchcock holding four public meetings where input was requested, presenting the plan to TRPA three times, three times to City Council and twice to the planning commission.

Before the internet existed these “confidence scams” were frequently perpetuated through direct contact and bolstered by a victim who is too trusting. With the internet and other technology, criminals have shifted their efforts so as to accomplish their rip-off over long distances and without direct contact. Unfortunately, local law enforcement has limited capacity to track and ultimately prosecute such crimes.
South Lake Tahoe fire captain arrested on porn charges is resident of Chico
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/02/2015 - 4:14pmA Chico man who works as a captain for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of child pornography.
Mark McLeod Wygant, 44, appeared in federal court Friday and is scheduled for preliminary examination Feb. 13, unless he is indicted earlier, which would change the appearance to arraignment, said Lauren Horwood, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Bond was not offered and he remains in custody at Sacramento County Jail.

Are you prepared for a rise in burglaries?
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/19/2015 - 9:43pmSince the beginning of December, 2014 there have been 19 thefts, six burglaries and two robberies reported in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. While many of these are petty thefts, others have resulted in the theft of valuable jewelry, electronics and other belongings from residences while the owners weren't home.
Have you protected your home to the best of your ability? Many of us may think that "it can't happen to me," but when a home was burglarized around the corner from me, I changed that mode of thinking and started looking into ways to better protect mine.
Sacramento drug dealer sentenced to over 21 years in prison

England Jr. to 21 years and 10 months in prison for possessing more than 163 grams of crack cocaine, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
South Lake Tahoe not immune from fake vacation rental scams

That scenario happened over the recent holiday when not one, not two, but four different groups thought they rented a home on Bonita Road near Heavenly Mountain Resort. All of the groups found a home for rent on Craigslist, a popular website used for buying, selling and renting.

3:00 a.m. - DUI - Lake Tahoe Blvd - 24-YEAR OLD WOMAN WAS STOPPED FOR AN EQUIPMENT VIOLATION AND FOUND TO BE UNABLE TO SAFELY DRIVE DUE TO HER LEVEL OF ALCOHOL INTOXICATION. A CHEMICAL TEST REVEALED A BAC OVER .08%. THE SUSPECT WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED ON THESE CHARGES.

Douglas County man arrested in child abuse case; Infant dies
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/09/2015 - 6:31pm1/10/15 11:45 a.m. update - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child abuse case involving a 2 month old infant.
On January 10, 2015 at 12:48 a.m., the two month old infant was taken off life support and died. The cause of death is pending autopsy.
Suspect Trent Getty was located in Sacramento, California at a Greyhound Bus Depot and was taken into custody by the Sacramento Police Department. Suspect Getty is in custody in the Sacramento County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Douglas County, Nevada.
Investigation continues.

Who is the target market for marijuana candy?

With marijuana now legal in many states, issues are arising that may have been overlooked in the eagerness to make marijuana legal.
Marijuana (cannabis) candies are hitting the market like a storm, and more people are now ending up in the E.R., or even dead, after ingesting them as well as brownies and cookies made from cannabis.
Traffic deaths in Nevada rose in 2014
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/05/2015 - 6:41pmPreliminary data released today by the Nevada Departments of Public Safety and Transportation show that there were 284 traffic fatalities in the state in 2014, up by 18 deaths from the prior year.
Even though the crash fatalities are far below the state's high in 2006 of 432, the previous downward trend has been reversed the past few years.

Arrest made in deadly Incline Village accident
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/02/2015 - 6:23pmA New Year's Day head-on collision on Mt. Rose Highway left one person dead, two sent to Renown Hospital by helicopter with major injuries and one taken by ambulance with serious injuries. The accident happened when a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo crossed over the center line and struck a 2003 Jeep Liberty. All three occupants of the Liberty were taken to the Reno hospital.
The driver of the Isuzu left the scene on foot after the accident which occurred just after 6 p.m. Witnesses said he was bleeding and looked injured.
Mild New Year's Eve for South Lake Tahoe/Douglas County Law Enforcement

Perhaps it was the cold temperatures or several activities spread out, but crowds on the street weren't as massive as known in the past.

SnowGlobe two days in: 52 arrests and six noise complaints
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/31/2014 - 9:07pmWith crowds approaching 14,000 nightly, one would expect some complaints and arrests. SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe had both during the first two nights.
On Monday, the first night of the techno-music concert there were 17 arrests for miscellaneous alcohol related violations, mainly minors in possession of alcohol or providing alcohol to a minor. There was one arrest for selling drugs and two noise complaints phoned into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department's dispatch.
Armed Robbery at South Lake Tahoe's KFC
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/23/2014 - 12:14pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant on Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe Monday night.
At about 11:30 p.m., officers arrived in response to the armed robbery which had just occurred. When they arrived the suspect, described as 5'8" and 130 pounds, had already fled.

Reno man pleads guilty after flying marijuana across country

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in South Lake Tahoe

With holiday parties and festive occasions, more people will be drinking that during a normal week.
League to Save Lake Tahoe gets $235,000 donation

Two store clerks cited for selling alcohol to minors
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/08/2014 - 9:48pmMinors helping the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were able to buy alcohol at two local businesses on December 5, resulting in citations and fines for the clerks.
The participants of "Minor Decoy" tried to purchase alcohol from 33 licensees in the city.
LTCC trying to add four year Public Safety Administration degree

They are waiting to hear from the California Community College's Chancellor's office to see if they are one of the 15 community colleges in the state who will be allowed the opportunity to offer one four-year degree.
LTCC's Baccalaureate Degree Steering Committee submitted a proposal to the Chancellor's office and should hear on January 21, 2015 if they are going to be offering a four-year degree in Public Safety Administration.

So. Lake Tahoe woman drives car through building after argument
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/17/2014 - 8:49pmA domestic argument in South Lake Tahoe Monday night lead to a woman getting into her car, driving over large boulders, through a building and coming to rest against a tree.
South Lake Tahoe Police, Fire, Paramedics and El Dorado County Sheriffs responded to a 911 call reporting that a car went through the local Jack in the Box. When responders arrived they found a car partially inside a building on the corner of Sussex and Brockway Avenues, across the street from the restaurant.
NHP: Click It or Ticket campaign to be enforced on local roads

The Nevada Highway Patrol has launched a multi-county "Click it or Ticket" campaign to educate drivers on the importance of using seat belts.
In Nevada, between 2007 and 2011, 441 unbelted vehicle occupants lost their lives and 1,197 were seriously injured in traffic crashes on our roadways

South Lake Tahoe Police Department receives grant to prevent traffic injuries and deaths
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/13/2014 - 6:57pmThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department was awarded a grant for $47,000 that will be used to fund part of the city’s ongoing commitment to keep the roads safe through enforcement and education.
A rise statewide in pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities created an unfortunate need for grant funding of road safety programs. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) awarded the grant.
“Without this much needed funding from the Office of Traffic Safety, we would not be able to address the problems of drunk and drugged driving within our community”, said Sgt Shannon Laney.

Gangs are a problem in South Lake Tahoe

Our mountain hamlet has white gangs, a black gang, hispanic gangs, motorcycle gangs and even white supremacists and sometimes they cross racial lines in order to beef up numbers. The gang names won't be mentioned in this article because of the advertising value it would give them as they try and recruit children and new members.
Last week's arrest of three gang members for a home invasion robbery brought the comment to the forefront..."Tahoe has gangs?"

It's midnight on Friday night in January. You're catching the end of a good movie in front of the fire but are finding it hard to hear the TV in your own home. The loud talking and screaming from the young adults in the hottub next door is louder that it should be.
Public's help sought in search for attempted murder suspect's knife
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/21/2014 - 8:42pmLaw enforcement and police dogs have been searching an area near the Tahoe Keys for a knife used in last week's attempted murder of a South Lake Tahoe woman.
Thomas Payne is accused of cutting his wife's throat with a large knife on October 16. He took off after the incident and returned to the scene several hours later. The knife used in the attack has not been found.
Payne's wife was taken to the hospital with life threatening injures and he was arrested on October 17 for attempted murder.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Faces Slew of Charges after Hit and Run
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/14/2014 - 5:44pmA 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman remains jailed Tuesday evening on charges of hit and run, resisting, DUI and assault with a deadly weapon. Alejandra Lopez was driving westbound on Highway 50 in the vicinity of South Tahoe Middle School at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday morning when the series of events occurred that landed her in a cell at El Dorado County Jail. Lopez is accused of splitting the two westbound lanes with her car, hitting the cars in each lane. The drivers of the two cars which were hit got of their vehicles after the accident when Lopez tried to run one of them over.
