Jet arrives in South Lake Tahoe via highway
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/11/2018 - 12:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) escorted a wide-load road truck and semi-trailer that were carrying an unusual cargo, a F-14 Tomcat. CHP picked up the escort at the Nevada-California state line on SR-88, helped it over Luther Pass on SR-89 and then to US-50 with a destination of the Lake Tahoe Airport.
When at the airport it was lifted off the truck, over trees and down to the tarmac.
Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/04/2018 - 8:37pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.
Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Christmas tree permits all sold out in South Lake Tahoe

As of 11:45 a.m. Friday, the US Forest Service office in South Lake Tahoe was sold out of the popular $!0 permits. The only other location in the Lake Tahoe Basin is in Incline Village. As of that same time they were down to about 275 permits and expected to be sold out by the end of the day.
Tahoe Fund looking for ideas that help solve Lake Tahoe's challenges

The nonprofit is interested in projects with fundraising goals of $5,000 to $1,000,000 that will improve lake clarity, outdoor recreation, forest resilience, transportation and stewardship.
Organizations are invited to submit project ideas by January 31, 2019 at tahoefund.org/challenge.

Veterans and members of the military can choose between the 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. brunch or 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. dinner at the Forest Buffet on the top floor of Harrah's Tahoe.
A military/veteran's identification card and a Caesars Entertainment Total Rewards Card must be presented. A Total Rewards card may be quickly obtained, free of charge, at the main Cashier/Total Rewards centers at either Harrah’s or Harveys.

Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 14
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/02/2018 - 9:01amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year once again when Christmas Tree permits go on sale at local Forest Service offices. With a limit of 2,00 permits there is no telling when they'll sell out.
Starting November 14, 2018, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin selling the $10 permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.
Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe as weather permits

Recreation facilities around Lake Tahoe closing for the season

Campgrounds already closed include Bayview, Fallen Leaf, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Nevada Beach and William Kent. Day-use areas and beaches closed include Baldwin, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Nevada Beach, Pope and William Kent.
The Tallac Historic Site closed up at the end of September though the grounds remain open.

Tallac Historic Site turning into haunted "Tahoe Terror"

Creative students and from South Tahoe High's Thunderclap AV Club and Key Club have created a haunted walk around the Baldwin House just in time for the Halloween season. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 19-21, guided and narrated tours from a host of spooky characters will take the public through the haunted grounds as the story is told of what happens to the servants and other unlucky souls at Lucky's estate.

$2.3M headed to Lake Tahoe for fire prevention projects

During their board meeting Thursday the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted their portion, a $2.3 million grant, for fire prevention projects and related efforts as part of the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.

Harrison was selected as the new Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Harrison arrived at the LTBMU a few weeks ago and comes to us from the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, where she served as the District Ranger for both the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts since 2014.

It takes a lot of partners to make location shoots successful and to recognize those that go above and beyond to make filming successful the California On Location Awards (COLA) are given out.
The COLA nominations were announced this week by the Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS) and one will find nominees from the county and South Lake Tahoe.

State schools chief visits California's smallest district - Alpine County

In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.

They restored crumbling stream banks, worked to protect native species and removed litter from Nevada Beach at Lake Tahoe.
“Hands-on restoration work is one of the most important actions we can take to Keep Tahoe Blue,” says Marilee Movius, the League’s community engagement manager, “and many hands make for lighter work to help out our busy land managers.”

In 1991, Tahoe had the most amazing roads; now, Tahoe has the worst roads. North Dakota – a very low tax state – just might have the best roads in the whole country. In 1991, there were many places to rent in Tahoe at affordable prices; now, too many people who work in South Lake Tahoe need to commute from the Carson Valley, unnecessarily increasing their carbon footprint.

Column: Decisions nearing for Shoreline Plan and Development Rights

TRPA will hold hearings for both these initiatives at the Governing Board meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 26, and could hold final votes on them as early as Wednesday, Oct. 24.
Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area

Crews from USFS, Lake Valley Fire and Calfire were called to the 5:20 p.m. fire on September 19. They staged at the Echo Summit Caltrans maintenance yard on Highway 50, and when determined to be on Forest Service land, the Engine 42 crew from USFS hiked into the fire location and the others were on call in case needed.

Eldorado National Forest consolidating Visitor Services along Highway 50 corridor

All visitor services currently located at the Pacific Ranger District three miles east of Pollock Pines will move to the Placerville Ranger District in Camino on October 15. The Placerville Ranger District location at 4260 Eight Mile road, Camino (take Highway 50 exit 54) will handle Desolation Wilderness permits, the Pacific District recreation information and rental cabins in addition to their regular visitor information services at that point.

Fire Fest 2018 will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and it's a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about fire safety and conservation.
Helicopters will star again this year as they land just outside the venue at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. What an incredible opportunity to get a close-up look at these amazing machines. Crews will be on hand to answer questions and explain how they help us when we need them most.
Parts of National Forest reopen as Boot Fire nears complete containment
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/14/2018 - 12:00pmIt has taken firefighters 10 days to contain 98 percent of the Boot Fire. The remaining open line is in the northern reaches of the fire area. Very steep slopes and thick timber made it unsafe for firefighters to work, thus delaying containment.
The fire burned 6,974 acres and at times closed US 395 between Walker and Bridgeport.
With the increased containment of the Boot Fire, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is now able to reopen some of the closed area on the Bridgeport Ranger District.
Fire damages South Lake Tahoe home during dangerous red flag conditions
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/12/2018 - 10:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Had it not been for the quick response by first responders, a fire at a South Lake Tahoe home Wednesday could have been much worse due to the dry conditions and high winds.
Lake Valley Fire Protections District (LVFPD) crews responded to a structure fire off of Lodgepole Trail. Upon arrival crews found the home in flames and additional resources were called to the scene to prevent further spread of fire to neighboring homes and vegetation.
"The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental," said Kileigh Labrado of LVFPD.
Fire dangers prompt ban on target shooting in National Forest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/12/2018 - 4:30amDue to extremely dry vegetation and very high fire danger, recreational target shooting is prohibited in the Eldorado National Forest until at least October 9, 2018. In the Lake Tahoe Basin, it is not prohibited but they suggest those wishing to target shoot go to one of the legal ranges in Carson City or Gardnerville for safety reasons.

The public tour will take place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Meeks Bay Resort, 7941 Emerald Bay Road (Highway 89), Meeks Bay, CA 96142. The 45-day comment period begins with the publication of the Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Sep. 11, 2018. Comments are most helpful if received by Friday, Oct. 26, 2018.

It continues to burn in the North Fork of the American River Canyon, and area characterized by steep, rugged terrain. The Helibase has been been moved to Truckee. It remains at 10% contained.

9:00 a.m. update 9/4/18: Updated mapping has shown the North fire has burned 500 acres. Hand crews, dozers, and engines worked through the night establishing an anchor point and starting to flank the fire with handline, hose lays, and dozer line. 10 percent contained.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/30/2018 - 11:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nature is healing, and a new partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and Barton Health is bringing the benefits of 154,000 acres of wellness around Lake Tahoe to the public.
"Nature is medicine, nutrition is medicine and you don't have to pop pills for health," said Nancy Laurenson of Barton Health during a recent wellness outing on the Rainbow Trail at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.
