Forest Service and South Lake Tahoe Police Urge Safety for 4th of July

The busy 4th of July holiday is just a week away, and with Lake Tahoe's increased crowds, excess traffic, fireworks and dry conditions, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are asking everyone to use caution.

Looking for an enjoyable way to contribute to the Lake Tahoe community, either as a local or as a visitor?

Adopt-a-Beach is one of the nicest and easiest ways to protect this valuable and beautiful treasure and they're looking for several volunteers to help this summer. This program is sponsored by the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority, U.S. Forest Service, League to Save Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and South Tahoe Refuse.

Forest Service Beings Mastication Project on North Shore

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit began a mastication project last week on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe off of Fairway Drive near Tahoe City.

The project will eliminate material left behind after thinning for fuels reduction and involves using a masticator, which is a large lawn-mower type of heavy equipment that runs over debris and chops it up into smaller pieces.

Rain and Cooler Temps Expected in South Lake Tahoe; Clearing and 70's By Holiday Weekend

An upper level disturbance off the Pacific Northwest coast will drop southeast over California into Nevada by Tuesday evening, bringing an enhanced threat of showers and thunderstorms to the Lake Tahoe region, which may have an impact on the existing wildfire in Reno.

Monday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. West wind 5 to 15 mph becoming northeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 53. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Full City Council Agenda on Tuesday Including Tahoe Wellness Cooperative's Event Permit Appeal

The City Council agenda for Tuesday, April 14th runs the gamut from a presentation on the Tahoe Valley Plan to the Cal Trans Master Agreement to hearing an appeal by Cody Bass of the Tahoe Wellness Cooperative.

Council will meet in closed session at 8 a.m. on anticipated litigation. The regular meeting will be called to order at 9 a.m.

Free Handbell Concert by Tintabulations at SLT Library

New Terrain Opens at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort

Just in time for the Martin Luther King holiday, Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort is opening Boulder Lodge, Boulder Lift and Boulder Bowl on the Nevada side of the mountain.

Even with only 2-3" of new snow over the last few weeks, snow making operations are going to allow skiers to access the mountain from all four base mountain lodges.

Also opening on Saturday is Groove run for ski-thru, with a single jib line featuring seven small rails and boxes on the left-hand side of the run as well as EpicMix Racing, located on lower Ridge Run.

Holiday Pet Food Drive at Coldwell Banker Select in Zephyr Cove A Huge Success

On December 28th, Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate in Zephyr Cove decided to give back to the pets in the community by hosting a Holiday Pet Food Drive, yielding big results. Leading up to the 28th, close to 600 lbs of dog and cat food were donated to pets in need. In addition, many pet toys and other items were donated, on top of $170 in check donation.

A Time of Giving: STAR Spreads Good Cheer

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) has spent the last several months spreading good cheer to local non-profits. They gave Christmas Cheer All Year $5,000 prior to the holidays and have now given both Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free $5,000.

Free Bus Rides in South Lake Tahoe Until January 5

Passengers will be riding Blue GO buses along Highway 50 for free through January 5. Routes 50 and 53 run from the "Y" to the Kahle Community Center from 5 am to 11 pm.

Tahoe Transportation District is offering the free rides to keep cars off the road during the higher traffic holiday season and to show riders how they can help the South Lake Tahoe air quality and to see how convenient, comfortable and affordable the bus system is.

South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial Tree Decorated for the Season

It appears that Santa's elves were busy at the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial this week. The memorial, located on the corner of Highway 50 and Wildwood Avenue, got a holiday makeover. Not only was the area decorated for the Christmas but there was a stocking placed at the site in memory for each local child who is memorialized there.

Organizers don't want any child to ever be forgotten nor do they want them to be without their own Christmas stocking for a little something from Santa.

A processional of cars followed behind the decked out fire truck (which also had holiday music coming from inside), the decorated Police Commando truck, and some decorated business vehicles. All were greeted at the end by a crowd that watched the lighting of the city tree, Santa and hot cocoa and cookies.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites everyone to their annual Holiday in History Open House on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8. On Saturday from 11 to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, visitors can tour the 1930s log cabin, view a Victorian holiday scene, enjoy free cider and cookies and children can even call the North Pole from a special antique phone! Sierra at Tahoe Opens on Friday

Cold weather and snow this week is allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort to open for the 2013-14 season on Friday, December 6, 2013 with early season conditions and very limited terrain. The ski resort will operate the Easy Rider Express chairlift which will give skiers and snowboarders access to the right half of Broadway trail. This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.

Holiday BAHM for Charity in South Lake Tahoe

Santa Run in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday to Raise Funds for Local Charities

The 2nd Annual Santa Run will be bringing out runners in all of their holiday costume as they run from Blue Angel Cafe on Ski Run, up the hill to the end at Himmel Haus. It will be held on Sunday, December 1 at 4:30 pm.

You'll see Santas, elves, presents and whatever other costumes the runners can come up with as they run the mile long course. At the end of the run there will be door prizes, a buffet and prizes awarded to the top three finishers in costume and best costume.

Jazz For the Holidays Show Set for December 20th

With the holiday season now in full swing, it’s only appropriate that the Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) brings Jazz for the Holidays to Northern Nevada for all to enjoy on December 20, 2013 at The Nightingale Hall - University of Nevada. Accompanying the accomplished musicians of the RJO are vocalists Cami Thompson and Kenn Pettiford, international Tap star Sam Weber and performers from the Sierra Nevada Ballet under the direction of Rosine Bena. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Vern Scarbrough, will open the holiday performance which starts at 7:30 pm.

Opening Day on the Lake Tahoe Slopes

After winds delayed Friday’s initial opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort opened for the 2013-2014 ski and ride season on Saturday, November 23. The resort opened the Gondola and Tamarack Express, accessing 14 acres and 1.5 miles of skiable terrain. The resort plans to open additional terrain this next week, conditions permitting.

Northstar California Resort also opened today, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort is slated to open on Monday, November 25, giving access to three Tahoe resorts leading into the Thanksgiving holiday. Sierra at Tahoe may join them, depending on conditions.

Holiday Parade to Benefit Christmas Cheer

18th Annual Holiday Faire at Valhalla

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Snow on the ground, a decorated Grand Hall which is home to the 18th Annual Holiday Bazaar at Valhalla Friday through Sunday. Local artists and vendors will have a variety of hand crafted and other special items for purchase.

On Saturday and Sunday there will also be performances by the local school choirs and other musical groups, Santa will stop by to spread holiday cheer and an assortment of hot cider, hot mulled wine and holiday cookies will be available for purchase.

Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree Permits Go On Sale November 18

Is cutting down a Christmas tree in the forest part of your tradition or wanting to start a new one? This is the time of year that tree cutting permits go on sale, and they'll go quickly! Just 2,500 permits will be available to those wishing to cut down their own Christmas Tree in the Lake Tahoe basin this year. Available are a variety of pine, fir and cedar trees from designated cutting areas around the lake. The permits cost $10 each and available only on a first come, first serve basis starting on November 18, 2013. There is a two permit per family limit.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “PEANUTCRACKER – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17th in Reno, Nv. Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker”, PEANUTCRACKER is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Fun Runs This Weekend

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Tri Club have partnered to provide a series of three fun runs this Fall season including Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run, Turkey Trot and Jingle Jog.

The 1st Annual “Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run” will be held this Sunday, October 13th at Lake Tahoe Community College Playfields located at 1300 Al Tahoe Blvd. The Fun Run will begin at 10am and participants are encouraged to dress in Halloween attire with prizes for Best Costume and Most Ridiculous Costume being awarded.

Back Roads - Lake Tahoe to Apple Hill via Highway 4

My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.

South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts keeps Christmas Cheer doors open with $5k donation

Christmas Cheer, one of South Lake Tahoe’s local food banks, could not open its doors on some Sundays this fall from lack of available funds and contributions. The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) came to the rescue with a $5,000 donation that will significantly replenish the shelves at the food bank for the 400 households it serves.
