Kudos: Contributions of $645,000 for the South Lake Tahoe community
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/26/2020 - 8:06pmIt is undeniable that the areas hit the hardest economically by the COVID-19 pandemic are those heavily reliant on tourism. South Lake Tahoe is unquestionably one of these areas, suffering not only because of the closure of its tourist economy but suffering higher infection rates due to the very tourism it relies upon. It is for these reasons that so much of the focus of the El Dorado Community Foundation, who serves all of El Dorado County, has been directed toward South Lake Tahoe. We recognized very early on that South Lake Tahoe would be the hardest hit region in the county.

Kudos: Dental Assisting program thanks South Lake Tahoe area dentists
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/29/2020 - 9:52amOur local dental offices are SUPER HEROS! When COVID-19 shut the world down, it shut our dental offices for about 2.5 months. When they could reopen, they were faced new required PPEs and a shortage trying to get what was needed to reopen. Then there was me, asking them to take my dental assisting students for an externship which requires a minimum of 50 hours spent in the office. Lake Tahoe Community College provided each student with the required PPEs, so it would be less of a hardship for the dental offices to take them.
Column: Dreaming of a just and permanent solution
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/26/2020 - 8:24amWith its decision last week, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a real sense of relief and a bit of a reprieve to approximately 800,000 DREAMers in America, including 200,000 in California alone. When the justices sided with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, ruling that the way the Trump administration rescinded the program in 2017 was unlawful, it was a big victory for immigrant communities and their many allies.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/03/2020 - 3:55pmIt’s difficult to find the right words. Even now, a week after the on-camera murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, by police officers, and all of the fallout felt nationwide, I’m still trying to understand the world, how to respond as a community leader, and how to explain it to my kids. All of the frustration, sadness, and outrage — it all seems so familiar since we’ve all been witness to these acts before, all seen and read and heard about cases of unarmed black people and other people of color killed in police custody when it was clearly avoidable.
