Visit South Lake Tahoe recreation center and museum during community event

The City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates their 50th anniversary this year, and as part of their year long party they are holding events throughout town.

This weekend, join them at both the Parks and Recreation Department and the Lake Tahoe Historical Museum on Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn what is offered at the Rec Center this summer. This is the perfect time to sign up for the popular South Tahoe Adventure Recreation (STAR) Summer camp, enroll in swim lessons, enjoy refreshments and more! The Recreation and Swim Complex is located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

South Lake Tahoe Community Blood Drive on Friday, May 1

BloodSource will hold a South Lake Tahoe Community blood drive to meet the community need for blood and blood products. The new blood drive location will be at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Center Gymnasium at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. The blood drive is sponsored by the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Walk-ins are welcome.

Douglas County invites public to review Johnson Lane Park plans

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Commission invites the community to review the phased improvements planned for Johnson Lane Park located on Stephanie Way during its Commission meeting on April 7, 2015, 6:00 pm at Piñon Hills Elementary School.

The Parks & Recreation Commission will be reviewing a conceptual phased improvement plan for the Johnson Lane Park. The estimated construction budget for the improvements is $750,000 and will include the following:
• A new playground system
• A picnic pavilion
• A restroom remodel

List of new and familiar names seek City commission appointments

In their meeting of 2015, the South Lake Tahoe City Council will make appointments to four commissions.

Residents seeking one of the two available spots on the Airport Land Use Commission are Ted Long and Michael Siracuse. There are seven openings on the Building/ADA Board of Appeals, and six people seeking the spots: David Huber, Keith Cloutier, William "Chip" Henderson, Robert King, Dale Rise and Randy Vogelgesang.

Lake Tahoe Sno-Park season and day passes available

Lake Tahoe area Sno-Parks can now be enjoyed with the purchase of an annual pass as well as with a daily pass.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation operates 21 Sno-Park sites that provide snow-cleared parking lots with sanitation facilities and access to snow play areas, cross-country ski and snowmobile trails.

In the Lake Tahoe area there are several Sno-Parks: Echo Lake, Taylor Creek, Donner Summit, Hope Valley, Blackwood Canyon, Carson Pass and Meiss Meadow.

Ski Club still sliding after 50 years!

Zephyr Cove Ski Club is a non-profit organization of parent volunteers who enjoy working with youth in the community to help them learn how to ski and snowboard with the help and skills of Heavenly Ski School. ZCSC is associated with Douglas County Parks and Recreation and the Douglas County School District. Our purpose is to provide an affordable, fun and safe skiing and snowboarding experience for the children of our community.

Grand opening for Douglas County Community and Senior Center

A brand new, 83,225 sq ft community and senior center will be unveiled December 6. The $16.9 million center was expected to open in February, 2015 but construction is ahead of schedule.

Billed as something to serve the community from cradle to grave, the Douglas County Community and Senior Center located across the street from Lampe Park in Gardnerville, NV will have a senior center with a dining room for 300 people, administrative offices, senior day care, health nurse office, preschool, activity rooms, fitness and workout areas and gymnasiums.

The Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan has identified the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex for future renovation, but exactly how that renovation will look is up to the public.

The City's Parks and Recreation Commission is holding a public workshop to gather input from the community on what their desires for the complex are.

Divers in Emerald Bay to remove Asian Clam control mats from bottom of lake

Divers are mobilizing at the mouth of Emerald Bay to start removing 5 acres of rubber mats that were laid on the lake bottom two years ago for a pilot project to control Asian clam populations in the area.

Divers are anticipated to be working in the water through November, so boaters are asked to exercise caution when entering and exiting Emerald Bay and obey a no-wake zone that extends 600 feet from shore at Lake Tahoe.

Nineteen positions open on City of South Lake Tahoe Commissions

They are now collecting applications for two-year appointments to the Airport Land Use Commission, Building/ADA Board of Appeals, Parks & Recreation Commission and the Planning Commission. Some of the openings are for City residents only while others just need to live in the Lake Tahoe basin portion of El Dorado County.

Douglas County names Jim Nichols as new County Manager

Douglas County can now say they have a County Manager, a position that hasn't been filled since the former manager left earlier this year.

Jim Nichols has accepted the position of Douglas County Manager at a pay rate of $172,000. He is expected to begin September 29, 2014.

Drought affecting California State Parks including D.L. Bliss in Lake Tahoe

A lack of water in California has prompted water restrictions to be imposed at California State Parks including Lake Tahoe's D.L. Bliss.

Due to the drought conditions showers, flushing toilets, and trailer dump stations will not be available at the park and chemical toilets have been put in their place.

According to the park's website, drinking water will continue to be available at the spigots throughout the campground but there will be no showers.

South Lake Tahoe Citizens Academy Holds 4th Graduation

The fourth session of the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Citizens Academy graduated during Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The Spring 2014 academy was held from April 9-May 21, 2014 and consisted of 13 attendees including: Douglas Bolton, Tom Burkart, Ian Caruth, Tobias Devor, Janill Gilbert, Misty Johansen, Jen Menzel, Jo Mutz, Lannette Rangel, Jonathan Schank, Leslie Schultz, Brandon Swartz, and Judy Weber.

Free Tennis Clinic for Local Kids at Zephyr Cove Tennis Center

There will be a free tennis clinic for all local children at the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club on Saturday and Sunday, June 14-15. The event is being sponsored by the Douglas County Parks and Recreation, Coyote Grill and the tennis club.

The clinic is open to all Lake Tahoe basin kids ages 8 and older.

Community Insight on Recreation and Tourism Sought in Upcoming South Lake Tahoe Workshops

A visioning round table in South Lake Tahoe will discuss the role that outdoor recreation plays in enhancing tourism and community livability in South Lake Tahoe. All residents are invited to either workshop to share their insights about parks, recreation, trails, events and programs so that recreation opportunities can improve on the South Shore.

Sixteen Graduate From South Lake Tahoe Citizen's Academy

Another group of locals successfully completed the South Lake Tahoe Citizen's Academy. The graduates were presented with certificates at Tuesday's city council meeting. Citizen Input Sought on New Recreational Plan

The City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County wants the help of all locals in creating a new plan for parks, recreation facilities, trails and programs. The area's recreation opportunities attract and serve residents locally and visitors from around the world.

Complete this questionnaire to provide input to help the City and County make decisions about parks and recreation in the South Shore area of El Dorado County. Anyone ages 10 and over is encouraged to respond.

South Lake Tahoe and canine association team up to install agility equipment at Bijou Dog Park

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association are working in partnership to prepare and install the agility equipment at the Bijou Park.

After careful consideration and discussions with all of the City Departments involved in this project it has been decided that the dog agility park will be located across from the dog park instead of inside the current dog park. We believe this is a better option and will be easier to maintain.

South Lake Tahoe graduates second session Citizens Academy

The second session of the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Citizens Academy graduated today during today’s city council meeting.

South Lake Tahoe Spring into Summer Kick-Off Party

South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot Race Results

The City of South Lake Tahoe held the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run last Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility. The Fun Run was a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant was a winner of either a turkey, pumpkin pie or swim pass. Thank you to the many local volunteers who pitched in to make this event a success, including Raley’s for their generous donation of all the turkeys and pies ad well as the Optimist Club for their continued support of this annual event.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to remind the community that the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run is being held this Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility at 11am. The Fun Run is a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant will win a prize. We would also like to thank the many local volunteers, including Raley’s and Optimist Club for their support of this annual local event.

Six-week Asian clam control project begins at Emerald Bay

Boaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

Turkey Trot 2012 at the Community Recreation Center

Get into the holidays with fitness in mind with Turkey Trot 2012 at the South Lake Tahoe Community Recreation Center. The event is hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club and the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department. Sign up at 10am.
Races held snow, rain or shine! Race distances range from 25 yards for the kids to 2.8 miles for the adults. Youth races begin at 11am and adult race begins at noon. Winners in each division win a turkey. Second and third places receive pumpkin pies.

Asian clam control project at Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay

A team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program is scheduled to begin implementation of the largest Asian clam control project in the history of Lake Tahoe on October 15, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay.

South Lake Tahoe City Council Recognizes Graduates of First Citizens Academy

The South Lake Tahoe Citizens Academy was launched in July 2012 to provide citizens an opportunity to increase their knowledge about the workings of local government and to become more involved in the shaping and development of their community. Nineteen residents participated in six sessions conducted over a 12 week period.

Reilly is the Program Manager for HICAP, California’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, and is an expert on Medicare.

Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Train with the California National Guard in South Lake Tahoe

On Sunday, February 12, 2012, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team hosted a joint training with the 1-168th Medevac Wing of the California National Guard and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team. Training was conducted in and around Emerald Bay State Park. The 1-168th Medevac Wing, based at Mather Army Air Field Base near Sacramento, brought two Blackhawk helicopters equipped for search and rescue operations with hoists as well as their crew of Chiefs and Medics.
