The 10th annual event will feature school-wide events in Carson City, Clark, Washoe, Lyon and many other counties. Children not taking part in an organized school event are encouraged to involve their families in safely walking or bicycling to school on this special day and throughout the year.
Planned Meyers roundabout project to get underway in April
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/06/2019 - 11:41pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to start work in April on their $4.1M project to convert the existing T-intersection at US50 and SR89 in Meyers into a three-leg roundabout.
Federal funds will be used to create what transportation officials say is a safety project by reducing the number and/or severity of collisions at the intersection. At this intersection there were 16 accidents on the Highway 50 side, and four accidents on the Highway 89 side from 2008 to 2013. There were no fatalities in those accidents.

The California Pedestrian and Bicyclist Enforcement and Education Project (CPBEEP) grant runs from October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019. During this year-long statewide campaign, CHP officers will conduct enhanced enforcement activities and public education campaigns.
Victim identified in fatal Lake Tahoe pedestrian - vehicle collision
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/04/2018 - 4:04pmSouth Lake Tahoe resident Michael Spate has been identified as the man who died after being struck by a vehicle just before 7:30 p.m. on September 28, 2018.
The preliminary investigation suggests Spate, who was 65-years-old, was crossing Lake Tahoe Boulevard near the driveway into Denny's and US Bank. He was not walking in a crosswalk.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/29/2018 - 12:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 65-year-old man died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle near Denny's on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Just before 7:30 p.m. on September 28, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received several calls about a pedestrian versus vehicle collision near the intersection of Lake Tahoe and Al Tahoe Boulevards.
Upon arrival they found an unresponsive man lying in the roadway in front of Denny's. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the local man deceased at the scene.
CHP School bus safety enforcement operation in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/20/2018 - 10:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California Highway Patrol officers will be riding on local school buses on September 24 during a state-wide school bus pedestrian safety enforcement operation.
Motorists across the state continue to disobey the law requiring them to stop for a school bus with its flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended. During a one-day survey in 2016 of 137 school districts in California, over 26,000 motorists failed to stop for a school bus that was stopped to load or unload pupils.
SR89 to close overnight in Meeks Bay
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/19/2018 - 4:38pmCaltrans is alerting motorists to a full overnight closure of a section of State Highway 89 in the Meeks Bay area on Thursday.
The highway is scheduled to be closed from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday between Meeks Bay Resort & Marina and Sugar Pine Point State Park to allow for a bridge to be installed at Northridge Drive as part of the ongoing bike path extension from the state park to the resort.
2019 project to reroute Upper Truckee River through South Lake Tahoe marsh
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/13/2018 - 2:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Money is on its way to South Lake Tahoe to restore the Upper Truckee Marsh, the largest remaining wetland in the Sierra Nevada, and reverse damage created by decades of development.
The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) announced Thursday they received $1,700,066 from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife towards their project to redirect the Upper Truckee River to its historic network of channels through the Marsh. Water flowing through the Marsh will slow down, allowing sediment to settle instead of reaching Lake Tahoe.

The public tour will take place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Meeks Bay Resort, 7941 Emerald Bay Road (Highway 89), Meeks Bay, CA 96142. The 45-day comment period begins with the publication of the Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Sep. 11, 2018. Comments are most helpful if received by Friday, Oct. 26, 2018.
Nevada law enforcement joining forces to emphasize importance of safe and sober driving

The enforcement began on August 25 and ends on Monday, September 10.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will dedicate extra officers to DUI enforcement as part of a statewide JOINING FORCES campaign aimed at reducing tragedies caused by people driving under the influence.

On Sunday, August 19 at 12:12 a.m., South Lake Tahoe fire and police departments responded to the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard (Hwy 50) and Lakeview Avenue on the call of a pedestrian versus vehicle crash.
Steve Teshara named president of California Association of Councils of Governments

Teshara will serve as the president of the California Association of Councils of Governments (CALCOG), a group whose membership includes 47 regional governments involved in the planning, funding, and development of the state’s transportation infrastructure.
He has been representing TTD on the CALCOG Board.

Big changes for Wye in North Lake Tahoe as iconic features removed

The iconic 21-foot trout sculpture has been sitting in the island intersection between State Route 89 and State Route 28 along with the Williamson Tree and Rotary Club flagpole.
Camp Richardson light to remain "off line" indefinitely
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/17/2018 - 11:40amCAMP RICHARDSON, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After meeting with partner agencies, Caltrans has decided to discontinue the use of the pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing device on State Route 89 in Camp Richardson indefinitely.
In an effort to make for safe pedestrian passage across the highway and to manage traffic through the State Highway 89 corridor, Caltrans installed the beacons in 2016 but they were often confusing to drivers with its yellow and red light system.
Fanny Bridge/SR-89 project in full swing, expect delays in Tahoe City
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/07/2018 - 2:11pmWork resumed May 1 on the SR 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project in Tahoe City, a project that will bring a new Truckee River Bridge, three roundabouts, and street improvements including lights and sidewalks.
The old Fanny Bridge will be replaced with one that has a new bridge rail that matches the original bridge rail, plus there will now be sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

Avalanche warning issued for Crystal Bay area

Per the Washoe County Emergency Management avalanche expert, due to weather conditions and forecasted incoming weather conditions, a Stage 1 Avalanche Warning has been issued for the residents of Crystal Bay/Third Creek subdivisions.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/15/2018 - 5:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - An early morning collision at the intersection of Venice Drive and Tahoe Keys Boulevard sent one to the hospital.
At 7:50 a.m. Thursday, February 15, a 16-year-old unlicensed driver hit a 94-year-old male pedestrian at the intersection of the two streets.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, JPA ambulance and South Lake Tahoe Police Department all responded.
The pedestrian was transported to Barton Hospital with a head injury.
According to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver is at fault.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
Pedestrian hit by car on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/26/2018 - 8:12amA 27-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident is recovering after being hit by a vehicle late Thursday evening.
At about 11:00 p.m. on January 25, a vehicle was heading southwest on Pioneer Trail and passing in front of the Americana Village when it hit the pedestrian.
The driver said they did not see the victim and immediately stopped and is cooperating with police. South Lake Tahoe Police (SLTPD) and Fire Rescue responded and the pedestrian was transported to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/03/2018 - 1:27pmThe Nevada Departments of Transportation and Public Safety are reminding Nevadans to share the road after Nevada pedestrian traffic deaths rose in 2017 amid a decline in overall statewide traffic deaths.
In 2017, Douglas County had a rise in all deaths on the road: Fatal crashes up from 5 to 9, fatalities up from 5 to 11, alcohol fatal crashes up from 1 to 2, and number of fatalities in those crashes up from 1 to 3.
