The South Lake Tahoe and Meyers communities were out in force at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School on August 1 for the first local observation of National Night Out.

Volunteers hit Lake Tahoe beaches to clean up after the 4th of July

5:00 p.m. update: The beach cleanups for July 5 have concluded, and according to the League to Save Lake Tahoe, 1,678.25 pounds were picked up by their 321 volunteers at 5.64 miles of beaches. And that to the 4,000 pounds collected at El Dorado area beaches and there was 2.84 tons of trash picked up in one day.

As the sun came up over Lake Tahoe the day after the July 4 celebrations, scores of volunteers were headed to the beaches to help clean up the trash left behind on local beaches.

Plastic, light and sound pollution focus of movie screening in Lake Tahoe

Light and sound affect people and wildlife. Find out more when the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science hosts the next TERC talk and movie screening in Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m.

"The Smog of the Sea" will be shown. It is a short film that chronicles a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea to assess the fate of plastics in the world's oceans. As the crew sieves the water they find a fog of microplastics permeating the world's oceans.

TRPA, Keep Tahoe Blue and area schools log big miles during Tahoe Bike Challenge

Staff with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue) took the top prizes in the 2017 Tahoe Bike Challenge, while hundreds of Tahoe youth rode in increasingly large bike-to-school events.

Each year, for the first two weeks of June, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors participate in the Tahoe Bike Challenge. In teams or as individuals, participants join a friendly competition to see who can replace the most car trips with trips by bicycle.

Western Nevada College hosting Journey of Hope

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity’s Journey of Hope is a group of philanthropic-minded cyclists traveling across the country to help people with disabilities, and they'll be in Carson City on Friday, June 16.

Since 2014, Western Nevada College has hosted the group as they make their annual journey across 32 states, 12,000 combined miles of cycling.

Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue beach cleanups

Each year, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for our largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from our beaches. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by joining a beach cleanup site!

DJ, facepainting and lots of donuts mark Rainbow Sprinkles grand opening

Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt held their official grand opening and ribbon cutting in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, bringing out a parking lot full of fans and future fans.

Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo opened the doors of their shop in January, 2017, but with the heavy, and long, winter, they wanted to wait until weather was nicer to roll out the official red carpet. Plus, Saturday was just a day after National Donut Day!

The Meyers community plans OMG Fun Run and Angora Fire event

Register Now for the 2nd Annual OMG Fun Run on Old Meyers Grade, Sunday, June 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Costumes are encouraged and this year the best costume will receive a prize. Additional prizes will be awarded for the first to Reach the Top and Most Laps for the man, woman, and child (12 and under) divisions. Winners in each category and participants who complete at least three laps will have their names posted on the Meyers Community website after the event.

Ditch the car, ride on two wheels during Tahoe Bike Challenge Week

For the 12th year the Tahoe Bike Challenge will see how many locals and visitors will park their cars and use a bike to get to work, school and play. This year's event is from June 1 to 14.

Returning is the popular and friendly competition which pits students from local schools, businesses and agencies against each other in friendly competition to see who can replace the most car trips by bicycle.

Help clean South Lake Tahoe bike trails

LTCC student art exhibition kicked off with reception and awards ceremony

This month-long art show is always a hit. Approximately 400 works of student art will be on display from digital art and printmaking to sculpture, a culmination of students' creations over the past year.

Family Resource Center's 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival Friday

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is holding their 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Friday, May 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Tickets can be purchased at the center for $20 or at the door for $25. Children ages 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free. Raffle tickets for chances at prizes donated by local businesses are available for $5 each of 5/$20.

Lake Tahoe roadside boat inspection stations open for season

Boating season in Lake Tahoe is here, and with it comes the return of roadside stations that will inspect and decontaminate motorized boats and watercraft heading to the lake.

All motorized watercraft require inspection for aquatic invasive species (AIS) prior to launching into Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake and Echo Lake. Invasive species, such as quagga mussels, New Zealand mudsnails, and hydrilla, are known to multiply quickly and colonize underwater surfaces, including docks and piers, water supply and filtration systems, buoys, moored boats, and even the beautiful rocky shoreline.

6th annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

South Shore youth treated to 10,000 eggs and prizes at Lake Valley Fire hunt

Children from the Meyers and South Lake Tahoe communities took part in the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's (LVFPD) second annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Park.

10,000 plastic eggs were hidden in the park, each filled with candy, Lake Valley tattoos and some special golden eggs with prizes.

Jamie Sessions, and her husband LVFPD Fleet Manager Andrew Session, took two of their chickens to the event for the kids and their families to enjoy.

Lake Valley Fire Deparment thanks the community

Lake Valley Volunteer Firefighter’s Association held its 55th annual Fire Fighters Ball on March 10, 2017. The Ball was given a new theme this year as the fire fighters hosted a sold out elegant event at the Edgewood Tahoe which included fine dining, a presentation by Lake Valley FD Honor Guard, auctioning of firefighters skills such as yard cleanup, car detailing to name a few, an ongoing silent auction packed with dozens of items that were so generously donated to Lake Valley by our community and live music and dancing.

South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club holds 50th annual Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg Hunt planned by Lake Valley Fire Department

2nd annual Dual on Dynamite fundraiser for Sierra-at-Tahoe Avalanche Dogs

Kenny Curtzwiler, the Lake Tahoe SkiBum, has organized the 2nd annual Dual on Dynamite bump race to be held at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Sunday, April 2 as a fundraiser for the resort's avalanche dogs.

This event will also be the used as the inaugural "Remember Zach 'Zach-Mac' McAllister" event.

A South Lake Tahoe native, McAllister died unexpectedly in November, 2016 at the age of 26. The 2008 South Tahoe High graduate was a firefighter-paramedic at Northstar Fire Department for four years and a ski patroller at Sierra-at-Tahoe for eight years.

American Legion Post 795 holding St. Patrick’s Day dinner

South Lake Tahoe fundraiser to raise funds for Fallen Leaf Lake trail

Kudos: Virtual race helps fund cancer wellness program

On behalf of the organizers of the Lake Tahoe Virtual Race, I would like to thank Lake Tahoe community members and businesses as well as Barton Health employees and physicians for their incredible generosity.

Barton Health recently hosted the first Virtual Race Challenge. Racers walked and ran for 72 days and recorded their mileage on a 72 mile digital map of Lake Tahoe. Together, with their financial contributors, the racers raised $4,044 in donations to help expand Barton Health’s Cancer Wellness Program.

Santa Train arrives this weekend!

A holiday favorite, the Santa Train, is heading to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City for two special weekends, December 10-11 and December 17-18.

Santa will join the museum crew on historic steam trains from the Virginia & Truckee Railway for 20 minutes trips where children can visit with Santa, write him a letter at a special table and receive candy canes.

Youth invited to enter California State Park art contest

With several state parks around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding Sierra Nevada, budding Van Goghs have a lot of local experience to draw upon as they enter the California State Park Foundation's art contest, "Discover State Parks."

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.
