El Dorado County safety personnel kept busy on South Shore

Wednesday and Thursday were very busy for local safety personnel and volunteers in El Dorado County as they responded to four search and rescue calls and another call concerning suspicious gunshots.

At noon Wednesday, August 9, Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers were initially told a male hiker on the Tahoe Rim Trail near Freel Peak was suffering from an allergic reaction to peanuts. The victim was able to walk out to awaiting rescuers near Willow Creek Road below Horse Thief Canyon.

Traffic issues at Sand Harbor causing dangerous conditions and congestion

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is becoming concerned with traffic issues around Sand Harbor on State Route 28 near Incline Village, especially early mornings on Saturdays and Sundays.

Drivers parking and those stopping in the middle of the road trying to park are creating backups and dangerous situations before the popular beach even opens.
On many weekend mornings the traffic is backed up all the way into Incline Village, causing major delays, and this is when there is no road construction.

Teens arrested at In-N-Out after Placerville robbery at Payless Shoe Source

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrested two juveniles in Placerville on August 8 after a robbery at the Payless Shoe Store on Missouri Flat Road.

Just before 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, the two allegedly entered the store and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. One of the two males had a knife. They then fled on foot.

A short time after the deputies located the teens at In-N-Out Burger and they were arrested.

According to EDSO, witnesses and the victim identified the teens as those who committed the crime as did video surveillance.

El Dorado County Supervisors respond to judge's ruling on Measure E

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today issued the following statement
about El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Warren Stracener’s decision regarding the constitutionality of Measure E, which was passed by voters in June 2016. It enacted or reinstated certain restrictions and policies concerning roads and traffic congestion, especially traffic issues related to new development:

Three-car crash near Sierra sends two to hospital

The California Highway Patrol released their report today of the July 29 three-car collision on US50 east of Sierra at Tahoe Road that sent one to Renown on Care Flight and another to Barton, both with multiple injuries.

Caltrans working on I-80 and Hwy 50 this week

Those traveling to and from Lake Tahoe this week may want to take note of traffic alerts on both Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be doing overnight Work to repair rough spots in the roadway Monday night through Friday morning. They will be doing grinding and paving work on U.S. Highway 50 on the section of the roadway that descends after Echo Summit into the Tahoe Basin.

Tahoe Rim Trail work days to reroute trail near Mott Canyon

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is holding their biggest trail project of the year and are looking for volunteers to lend a hand. They will be rerouting the trail near Mott Canyon off the dusty, steep access road.

Once finished, the trail will be a beautiful single-track trail with expansive views of the Carson Valley.

Two die in Minden skydiving accident

August 4 update: The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The pair's parachute deployed but there was an unknown problem that caused it to not slow their descent.

Update 2:55 p.m.: At approximately 10:15 am on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017, deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were called to a report of two skydivers down near the Minden Airport. Upon arrival, deputies found two deceased skydivers on the ground outside the perimeter of the airport.

Tahoe Arts Project to hold annual Music on the Beach

Johnson Lane residents invited to meeting on area drainage master plan

Woman injured after high speed motorcycle chase in South Lake Tahoe

An attempted traffic stop in South Lake Tahoe Saturday afternoon led to a high speed chase through town that ended with a woman being injured and the suspect getting away.

At 12:35 p.m. July 29, a call came into police dispatch about a disturbance between a male and female on the side of Tahoe Keys Boulevard near the intersection with Michael Drive. The caller said it appeared the female was trying to leave the area but was being prevented by a male on a motorcycle.

Air quality issues close Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe

8:00 p.m. update: Road construction on Highway 50 is what led to the closure of Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe.

"Nearby construction resulted in an air quality issue at our South Tahoe Branch, which was quickly identified and is being remedied," Anita Fox, Senior Vice President of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for Bank of the West told South Tahoe Now this evening. "We anticipate re-opening the branch no later than Thursday."

In the meantime, those wishing to conduct in-branch transactions can visit the bank's Tahoe City Branch at 150 West Lake Boulevard.

El Dorado County receives loan to build 11-acre public safety complex

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County has received a $57.14 million loan to build a public safety complex in Diamond Springs that will bring together the Sheriff’s Office operations which are currently spread out across 13 different locations in the county.

The loan is provided through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program.

Area fire update: Detwiler, Preacher, Ranch and Latrobe

Douglas County's lightning caused Preacher Fire is 20 percent contained this evening and has burned 5,386 acres since starting early Monday morning. The fire is burning in the Pine Nut Mountains in steep and hard to access terrain.

South of Folsom near Rancho Murieta, the Latrobe Fire has burned 1,000 acres and is now 40 percent contained. The fire, which started Wednesday afternoon, is near Latrobe Rd & Scott Rd.

Man arrested in Bay Area also suspect in Tahoe ski area indecent exposure cases

Ongoing indecent exposure cases in two counties over 200 miles apart may have been solved with the arrest of 34-year-old Wellington Potter of San Jose, Calif.

At 7:00 p.m. on July 17, 2017, a white Volkswagen Jetta stopped on a San Jose street and its driver exposed himself while masturbating after he called a 9-year-old over to his open window. The suspect drove away.

A few days after this incident a Santa Clara Police Detective reviewed a law enforcement flier put out by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County declared disaster area after Preacher Fire scorches 4,651 acres

Douglas County Board of Commissioners signed a Disaster Declaration today due to the lightning caused Preacher Fire which is burning seven miles southeast of Gardnerville.

The fire is currently estimated at 4,651 acres as of 6:00 p.m. on July 25. It is being managed at this time by Sierra Front Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) with support from East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Mapping glitch downsizes Preacher Fire to 4,651 acres burned

8:45 p.m. update: Firefighters on the Preacher Fire have gained ground on the fire and have been able to get it 20 percent contained. It was actively burning all day with single tree torching, creeping, and wind-driven runs. The total burned remains at 4,651 acres.

4:45 p.m. update: Acreage burned in the Preacher Fire is a lot less than previously reported due to a glitch in mapping. The fire, which started Monday with a lightning strike, has burned 4,651 acres.

Preacher Fire near Gardnerville swells to 3,130 acres, evacuations in place

9:00 p.m. update: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has initiated evacuations for areas east of Pine Nut Road to include Fred's Street, Sandoval, Taildragger, Bluebird, and Bar-J Roads as well as in the Sierra Spirit Ranch area including, Blue Sage Road, Badger Lane, Robinson Road and Lena Lane. In addition, Washoe Tribal Police are evacuating the Bodie Flats area in the vicinity of Courtland Avenue.

The lightning-sparked Preacher Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains southeast of Gardnerville has swelled to 3,130 acres according to DCSO with winds moving north.

Sale of Kingsbury Middle School is focus of special school board meeting

A special meeting of the Douglas County School Board will be held on Monday, July 24 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss, review and vote on one of two options surrounding the sale of Kingsbury Middle School.

The district closed the school during the 2008-2009 school year due to declining enrollment. Zephyr Cove Elementary School and Whittell High School adjusted the grades the serve to absorb the middle school students. The district put the school building and property on the market in 2012 and it has now been vacant for over eight years.

Boy suspected of starting Auburn fire while smoking marijuana

8:45 p.m. update: A juvenile has been arrested by CalFire law enforcement officers for starting Thursday's fire in Auburn.

The boy told officers that he was smoking marijuana when the nearby brush caught fire. He then called and reported the fire. He was taken into custody by CalFire at the scene and booked at the Placer County Juvenile Hall on arson-related charges.

Expect delays on Kingsbury Grade Tuesday as trees removed

Motorists traveling on Kingsbury Grade between Daggett Pass and Highway 50 can expect delays on Tuesday, July 18 as crews from NV Energy removes two large trees.

Single lane closures with a traffic flagger alternating traffic will be in place on between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. near Buchanan Road.

The trees are encroaching near power lines and need to be removed.

Head on collision on Black Bart Ave in South Lake Tahoe

Three people were`sent to the hospital Thursday afternoon after two cars collided on Black Bart Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Just after 4:00 p.m., the driver of one of the cars involved apparently fell asleep at the wheel, drifted over the yellow line into the path of a second car according to Ruth Loehr of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Loehr said both drivers were transferred to the hospital as well as one passenger.

CHP, El Dorado County Sheriff's officers, Lake Valley Fire and paramedics responded to the crash which closed a section of the road for almost an hour.

Local firefighters stop by celebrity golf to support Charles Barkley

"Charles Barkley became a beacon of hope and support for the firefighters and the recovery efforts of the community," Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshal Eric Guevin told the crowd at the 10th tee Friday morning. "Charles, we are here to support and cheer you on in your game today. We want people to care, be aware and prepare for wildfires. On behalf of the Fire Chiefs of Lake Tahoe, Sir Charles thank you for caring."

Two new fires in Northern Nevada in Washoe Valley and Cold Springs

11:30 p.m. update: All evacuation orders have been lifted on both the Brenda Fire and the Cold Springs Fire.

Multiple resources aggressively attacked both fires Friday, preventing them from moving through the dry hillsides.

As of tonight, Truckee Meadows Fire Department is reporting 1500-2000 acres have burned in the Cold Springs Fire.

The Brenda Fire east of Washoe Lake has burned an estimated 1200 acres and it is 10 percent contained.

"Best hole ever" - Justin Timberlake hangs out with boys from wimZr

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since golfing in his first American Century Championship in 2015, Justin Timberlake has enjoyed the camaraderie at Edgewood Tahoe's hole #7 during the Celebrity-Amateur tournament on Thursdays of celebrity golf week.

This year, he wanted to one one of the boys so he showed up and hung out for a couple of hours, dancing, dishing out comments about the celebrity's golf swings and shots and had what looked like a great time.

Big rig gets stuck trying to get around Emerald Bay; Road reopens

A big rig jackknifed on State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay at Cascade Lake Road Tuesday afternoon, closing the road as crews worked to get it off the road.

According to Caltrans, the big rig became stuck at 4:41 p.m. when it was unable to make it through a hairpin turn. All traffic was stopped in both directions until 6:22 p.m. when the rig was moved to a pull out by Eagle Point.

Traffic is now moving in both directions.

Construction underway on Gondola Vista Estates in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the works since 2002, construction has begun on a new housing development project underneath the gondola in South Lake Tahoe.

Victims identified in fatal Kingsbury Grade crash

Carson City residents have been identified as the victim's in Tuesday night's fatal collision on Kingsbury Grade.

On July 4 at 9:26 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene of a head-on collision on SR207/Kingsbury about two miles up from Foothill Road. Upon arrival they found a crash involving a 2013 Ford F150 and 2012 Scion XB.

The NHP preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Scion was driving eastbound and allowed his vehicle to cross over the double yellow lines into the path of the Ford, causing a head-on collision.

Highway 50 down to one lane due to accident near Round Hill

There is a three-vehicle accident at Highway 50 and Elks Point Road near Round Hill. The highway is down to one lane in both directions as vehicles involved are blocking left lanes.

Please slow down and use caution.

According to the NHP there are no injuries.

Four teens uninjured in Pioneer Trail crash

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four teenagers were in a car that crashed on Pioneer Trail Tuesday night after the fireworks show in South Lake Tahoe. Even though the car they were in suffered major damage, no one was injured.

For unknown reasons, the 17-year-old male driver allowed his 2006 Volkswagon Jetta to leave the road and collide with a guardrail as his was driving southbound just north of Jicarilla.

California Highway Patrol officer Ruth Loehr told South Tahoe Now that the passengers were all female, ages 17, 15 and 14.

There is no other information available at this time.

Fatal crash in Alpine County

A single car crash in Alpine County Monday afternoon claimed the life of a Nevada man.

At 3:30 p.m. on July 3, the driver of a Ford pickup was headed east on Airport Road one mile east of State Route 89 in Markleeville, Calif. For an unknown reason the car drifted off of the paved portion of the road and onto the shoulder. The pickup and driver went down a steep dirt embankment and overturned onto it's roof. It was a single crash.

The unidentified 61-year-old male driver was from Moundhouse, Nev. No alcohol appears to be involved.

Fatal crash on Kingsbury Grade; Road closed

11:10 p.m. update: The Nevada Highway Patrol Fatal Team is at the scene of tonight's fatal crash on Kingsbury Grade between Tramway Drive and Foothill. The road is closed on the valley side and all traffic trying to head over from the lake side is being turned around at Tramway.

Kingsbury Grade is closed at this hour between Tramway Drive and the Carson Valley as emergency crews work to clear an earlier fatal crash that claimed the lives of two people.

The crash happened about two miles up from the valley floor.

New fire now burning near Spanish Springs

Crews with Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Department of Forestry and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District have responded to a new fire burning near Spanish Springs and the Pyramid Highway. Dubbed the Winnemucca Ranch Fire, flames have consumed 1,500 acres since starting at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Both ground and air resources are on scene.

At least 11 homes are threatened, according to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

Ironwood Road is being evacuated, according to the Washoe County Sheriff.

South Lake Tahoe road lined with spectators for 4th of July parade

For the second year in a row the City of South Lake Tahoe hosted the annual 4th of July parade through town, bringing hundreds of spectators and participants.

Over 75 vehicle and float entries were joined by more than 200 walkers and cyclists along the route which went along Lake Tahoe Boulevard from the Y to Bijou Park. Hundreds of holiday revelers lined the street wearing red, white and blue, cheering and waving as the parade went by.

Foothill Fire burning near Genoa Lakes Golf

7:15 p.m. update: Fire crews have halted the progress of the Foothill Fire in Douglas County near Genoa Lakes Golf Resort. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center has updated the amount of acreage burned to 25 acres.

Winds in the area are still an issue and firefighters remain on the scene.

A grass and brush fire in Douglas County has grown to 85 acres according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Known as the Foothill Fire, it is burning in the area near the new Genoa Lakes ranch course off of Jacks Valley Road in Douglas County.

Small fire and jet ski accident keeping fire and police busy in South Lake Tahoe

The long 4th of July holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe got off to a busy start Saturday with a water rescue and fire.

A boater saw smoke coming from the hillside near Heavenly, called it in from their location off the Ski Run Marina at 1:29 p.m. and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police combed the streets in the area to try and locate the source. The fire was spotted on U.S. Forest Service land off Keller Road in between Ruby Way and Wildwood Ave.

Lake Tahoe road projects shut down for long holiday weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – With heavy traffic expected around Lake Tahoe this long holiday weekend, both California and Nevada highway departments are suspending their roadwork projects.

Caltrans’ construction projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and along the West Shore of the lake wrapped up work this morning and won’t resume until after the Fourth of July holiday.

Ex-Lake Tahoe Humane Society director leaves town, no charges filed yet

Former executive director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society moved out of South Lake Tahoe over the weekend, leaving many in the community questioning the timing after she was fired on March 31 amidst accusations of misappropriation of agency funds.

Niki Congero moved out of her rental home because she was given a 60-day notice to vacate May 4. The owner of the home wanted to use it for his purposes, according to Realty World, the property management company.
