South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic brings ‘Freedom of the Forties’ to the Tahoe Keys Marina this year on July 25 and 26.
This year's theme is ‘Freedom of the Forties’ which honors U.S. military and pays homage to antique and classic boats of the forties. World War II veterans are provided free admission to the event, and U.S. military receive discounts on event admission.

Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

The first day of school is August 25th.

It was great to see so many businesses educating themselves and their staff on responsible beverage service. These businesses are going the extra mile to avoid selling alcohol to minors and visibly intoxicated community members (both misdemeanor offenses that may result in revocation of their license to sell alcohol).

Bear and vehicle collision near Skyland on Highway 50 in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 9:27pm7/16/14 update: The accident occurred when 18 year old Alex Sanchez of Zephyr Cove swerved to miss a bear killed by a previous driver. Law enforcement was headed to the original accident when Sanchez came upon the bear in the road, served to miss it and flipped his 2000 Toyota. The car was totaled and Sanchez is recovering from bruises suffered from the tightening of his seat belt. The driver, from Sun Valley, NV, who hit the bear was driving a Ford Explorer and had his family in the car. Nobody sought medical attention after the accident.
Tahoe Douglas Rotary awards nearly $10,000 in scholarships
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 4:51pmThe Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club awarded nearly $10,000 in vocational and educational scholarships to local high school students this year. The ten winners attend either Whittell High School or South Tahoe High.
Whittell students who won the financial awards this year were Elizabeth Anderson, Tori Jimenez, Spencer Buchholz, Serena Libert, Kendal Ferris and Danica Bunnett for academics and Mark Waite and Margaret Ellis for vocational.
Three South Tahoe High students were awarded vocational scholarships this year: Gabriella Torres, Rebecca Wesson and Brandon Singleton.
Drug Free Coaltion working to prevent drug use for South Lake Tahoe youth

City of South Lake Tahoe elections this fall; Filing period starts Monday

The filing period opens on Monday, July 14 for all interested City residents who are interested in running for the open seats.
The terms of Council members Angela Swanson, Tom Davis and Brooke Laine will end this fall as well as that of City Clerk Susan Alessi and Treasurer David Olivo.

Three Seats Open for STPUD Board of Directors; Filing Period Starts July 14

Chris Cefalu, James Jones and Eric Schafer all have their terms ending on December 1.
The filing period opens on Monday, July 14 at 9 a.m. and will close on August 8 at 5 p.m. . If an incumbent fails to file for their term by the last day of the filing period, the time will be extended for 5 days, ending Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 5:00 p.m

A crowd of a few hundred people gathered at Echo Summit for "Return to the Summit" which honored the unique location as well as the unique time and team. There were tumultuous times in 1968 prior to the Olympics with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy as well as the Vietnam War.

Started in 2012 by South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, Race the Lake of the Sky is a premiere flat-water SUP race and was dubbed the top pick for the best stand up paddle event of the year in 2013 by pro SUP athlete Anthony Vela. The event offers a stunning location as the backdrop in drawing hundreds of participants, novice and elite alike. Various races include short course. They wrap it all up with a 14 mile race to Emerald Bay and Back on Sunday.

She has a mild mental handicap, which causes the police to consider her at risk. Her family reported that Ruth left their shared South Lake Tahoe residence two weeks ago, on Wednesday June 4th and has not been seen by her family since.

Fire Reported Near Kingsbury Middle School
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 2:17pm7:45 pm update: According to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire District's Fire Marshall, the cause of the fire by Kingsbury Middle School was human caused and is under investigation. Due to quick response by the Zephyr Fire Crew and Tahoe Douglas Firefighters, along with favorable weather, the fire only burned a 50' x 50' area. A resident in the area, Dr. Jeff Behar, rode his bike to the scene when he saw the smoke and found the crews distinguishing the fire and provided South Tahoe Now with photos.
2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

Chad Houck Named New South Tahoe High Principal

Houck, his wife Kelly and their four children will be relocating to South Lake Tahoe during the summer (he starts his home search on Wednesday with Realtor Adele Lucas). His first day on the job will be August 1st.
Teenage Boy Hit by Car on Way to South Tahoe High School Monday Morning
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/09/2014 - 6:50pmA young man was treated and released for minor injuries Monday morning after he was hit by a car as he rode his bike to school on Viking Way.
A parent was leaving South Tahoe High after dropping off her student near the Student Union. As she was exiting the side road coming up from the tennis courts she stopped at the stop sign. It was very congested as it was 7:50 a.m., the start of school. The parent didn't see the bicyclist coming up on her left and entered the road way, striking the boy.
As a precaution he was transported to the hospital with bruises and abrasions.

Students in grades 9-12, including rising 9th graders, are encouraged to apply. UB is the newest TRiO grant at Lake Tahoe Community College and is designed to provide fundamental support to high school students in their preparation for college. UB serves 60 students who are from low-income families, who are potentially the first in their families to go to college, or students who are at risk of academic failure.

There will be free physicals at the South Tahoe High Blue Gym for all perspective athletes and cheer/dance team squads. Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will be conducting the physicals, which are required for all participants.

No Bomb Found During Search of South Lake Tahoe's Y

May 29, 2014 - 2:00pm Customers and employees were evacuated from businesses around noon today at the South Y Center in response to suspicious circumstances surrounding an overheard conversation and a possible bomb.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department received a call from an employee at the South Y K-Mart, stating they had overheard a suspicious conversation between store patrons. The employee stated that the patrons had exited the store and that the employee walked around the shopping center and reported hearing a ticking sound coming from the shopping center general mailbox.

Once they departed, the employee searched for something out of the ordinary. He walked past the vendor mailboxes in between K-Mart and Raley's and thought he heard a ticking sound and called the SLT Police.
Aaron Crawford, the South Tahoe High on site officer responded first. He has extensive experience with bombs, and based on what he could hear at the mailboxes he felt the situation warranted more investigation.

The South Tahoe Family Resource Center, next to Bijou Community School, will be holding a ground breaking ceremony from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for their new community garden.
The Family Resource Center (FRC) community garden will showcase a variety of permaculture techniques that help increase productivity and extend our short growing season. The grant will fund a permanent fence to protect the FRC garden as well as garden-related materials, seeds and soil.

This group was recently founded by the Human Health and Social Wellbeing working group of the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative. In partnership, these two groups applied for the Champions for Healthy Kids Grant through the General Mills Foundation.

Sign ups start Tuesday, May 27. Players have three opportunities to sign up, tonight, June 17 and June 19.
The program if open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (must be 5 as of 08/01/14 to age 14 as of 08/01/14).
School Board Has Two Part - Day Long Meeting Tuesday

South Tahoe High Baseball Team Makes Best of First Trip to State Tournament

The Vikings lost their opening game on Thursday to #1 seed in the tournament, Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas, by a score of 17-6. They bounced back for game 2 on Friday morning. They beat Chaparall High School of Las Vegas, 13-8.
Whopping Cough Warning Sent Out to South Tahoe High Parents

South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.
The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:
39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/21/2014 - 10:48amDue to a ruling by the California Court of Appeals, the City of South Lake Tahoe can no longer enforce their sex offender ordinance which made it a misdemeanor for sex offenders to be within 300 feet of a school, park or recreation areas. During Tuesday's meeting, the City Council had to repeal the ordinance. To be official, the City Council will have a second reading and vote on the item in June.
"This is mind boggling," said City Councilwoman JoAnn Connor. "I am disgusted that the court has decided to ignore children in deference to sexual predators."

All proceeds from this evening of food and wine will benefit the local kids -- helping them be great!
Guests were treated to name vintages, cordials and beer for the evening courtesy of Southern Wine and Spirits and appetizers buffet courtesy of Edgewood Tahoe.
