Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.

October 30, 2013 - 5:00pm The South Tahoe High Preforming Arts Department is having a SPOOK-tacular Spaghetti Dinner at Bert's Cafe on October 30 from 5 pm to 7 pm. The cost is only $10 per person for a complete dinner or $15 for the dinner and a ticket to the Performing Arts Faculty Show at the school's TADA building at 7:30 pm that evening.
Tickets are available at Dr. Shanahan's office at 1154 Emerald Bay Road or at Dr. Doyle's office at 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.

The 11th Annual Treat Street will be held on Halloween night at South Lake Tahoe's Pine Cone Acre Motel. This year's event is sponsored by the Tahoe Area Coordinating Council for the Disabled (TACCD) and the Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Aktion Club.
All trick or treaters are invited to this free evening of fun and games from 5 to 8 pm. There will be a haunted house, bounce house, mini golf, pie eating contest and other special events. There will also be free hot chocolate, candy and s'mores. There will also be hotdogs for sale for $1.
Great Shakeout Earthquake Drills on Thursday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/16/2013 - 1:52pmStudents and staff at South Lake Tahoe schools will join millions around the world on Thursday to practice "Drop, Cover and Hold On" during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. The drills will be held at 10:17 on 10-17.
Over 18 million people and groups around the globe have registered on line as a participant in their own 10:17 on 10-17 drill. The recent earthquake in the Philippines shows that it is important to know what do in case of this type of emergency.
Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.

Council Votes to Ban Single Use Plastic Bags in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 5:13pmWith a vote of 3 to 2 in favor, the City Council today voted to ban single use carry out plastic bags in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. This issue was passionately debated by council members and the 8 citizens that offered their comment during today's City Council meeting. The city council is expected to finalize the ordinance later this month. The ban will take effect in grocery stores and farmers markets three months after adoption and will apply to all retail establishments after one year. Pharmacies,restaurants, and non-profits are exempted.
South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/29/2013 - 11:08amMore than 2 dozen decorated cars and trucks carrying South Tahoe High students lined Highway 50 on Saturday morning for the Annual South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade. The school's Pep Band, Lady Vikings, Football and Soccer teams, cheerleaders, Homecoming Prince and Princesses, alumni and classes as well as Pop Warner cheerleaders and players joined in the fun. Candy was tossed from passing cars and there were lots of cheering parents and residents along the parade route.

A week of homecoming festivities at South Tahoe High begins on Saturday, September 28 with the annual parade through town. At 10 am the parade will begin at the LTUSD bus garage on Al Tahoe Boulevard and head along Highway 50 to the high school.
Trucks full of students, cars carrying alumni, cheerleaders, teams, the pep band and more will join the parade route.
The South Tahoe High Alumni Foundation has planned the event which will also include members of the classes of 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968 and 1973.

The Coalition Coordinator will mobilize the community to prevent and reduce youth substance use by effectively representing the Coalition and building partnerships and support in the community.
LTCC: Back in Session

Though the numbers are comparable to last year, school officials have seen a shift to more full time students at the college. According to Tom Greene, VP of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at LTCC, there are seeing more students who are working towards credits to transfer to a four year college.
South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts keeps Christmas Cheer doors open with $5k donation

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) came to the rescue with a $5,000 donation that will significantly replenish the shelves at the food bank for the 400 households it serves.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/12/2013 - 7:14pmFor the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.
This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

While some riders were faster, Mykala's ride was filled with passion and compassion as she rode to raise money to sponsor under privileged dancers at Lake Tahoe's Shining Stars and to buy winter hats and gloves for the children at Live Violence Free.

Come and see this extraordinary and creative artist as he visits the West Coast for the first time in years. He's taking a day off of his tour to help out the school's music program. Don't worry if you don't have fishing equipment: fishing poles, tackle, power bait, and worms are also provided free of charge, or bring your own if you want.

Fantasy Football: A Woman in a Man’s World

Weeks of studying, plotting and planning has all been in preparation for this one big moment. A barren banner spread along one wall with 8 empty columns is about to be marked upon over the next 4 hours.
The headers on each column are now filled in with the names Cheeseheads, Rabid, Go Deep, Rebel Dogs, Midgets Punching Clowns, Wide Right, Tahokies and East Coast Connection.

Success at 4th Annual Sample the Sierra

The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

South Tahoe High Football Team's Season Opener moved to El Dorado High

Due to smoke in the area, all other teams in the league have cancelled their games, but since the Viking's opponent is out of the area it was decided to move the game.
The JV team will play at 5 pm and the varsity at 7:30 pm, Stay tuned to southtahoenow.com for scores and highlights all season long.

Tahoe Arts Project's Annual Holiday Festival at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room on Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.
Food, crafts, music and fun is on tap for the day's activities.
If you'd like to have a boothreserve a space, the deadline is October 16. All crafters and artists are invited, from beginner to professionals. Booth prices are just $50 for a 10 x 10 booth space with no additional commission fees charged.
2nd Annual Tahoe Arts Project Holiday Festival Needs Vendors

They have expanded the event my making it longer and in a new, larger venue at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room. It will be held on Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.
TAP expects twice as much foot traffic, and to ensure this they will not be charging an admission fee for the public as they did last year.
Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Raccoon skinning leads to arrest of at-large parolee, registered sex offender
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 08/20/2013 - 3:43pmSouth Lake Tahoe police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly skinning a raccoon after a foot chase ended on the South Tahoe Middle School ball field.
Kevin Burroughs, 37, faces several charges including unlawful taking of wildlife. He is also a parolee and a registered sex offender out of California and had a felony warrant for being a parolee-at-large. The raccoon’s remains were recovered and destroyed by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

One of the largest gatherings of unique boats in Northern California is the South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic, July 26-27, at Tahoe Keys Marina and Yacht Club.
Boat enthusiasts can get an up close look at the vessels, talk with their owners and hear the powerful roar behind straight V6, V8 and V12 engines. From the early 1900s to the fiberglass vessels of the 1960s, enthusiasts can see more than 65 wooden antique and classic boats in the water and eight race boats on their trailers.

Initial Greenway Bike Path phase coming in ’14

The significance of a stretch of bike trail cannot be measured in its length. Such is the case with the initial phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Trail that is slated to be built next summer. It will be less than a half-mile and comes with a construction price tag of about $500,000.
Tahoe SnowFlakes figure skaters head to Anaheim competition after 2nd place showing

On June 16, 2013, they took second place at the ISI competition held at the South Tahoe Ice Arena. This was their first competition. They are now headed to the ISI Worlds held in Anaheim, Calif. They will compete on July, 27, 2013.

Marijuana sales at South Lake Tahoe schools leads to arrest of couple

William Anderson, 30, and his fiancé Makayla Hoehn, 25, were arrested Monday and are accused of furnishing marijuana to South Tahoe High School and South Tahoe Middle School students, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams. Both admitted to the crimes.
Fish without a license on the Nevada side Saturday, June 8

June 8 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2013. On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.

Also covered will be the many airlines that flew into and out of the Lake Tahoe Airport. The conclusion will relate some mishaps that were photographed at the South Tahoe Airport. Join us for this free and interesting event at the historic Camp Richardson Lodge. Come early - seating is limited.
