Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

More snow for Lake Tahoe Basin on the way this weekend

More snow is on the way for Lake Tahoe, securing ski resorts preparing for the long Thanksgiving weekend.
The first of two low pressure systems will bring some snow to the Sierra beginning late Thursday night into Friday. The second and wetter system should arrive late Saturday night or Sunday with periods of heavy snow possible for the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Models have been mixed and the weather service hasn't suggested snow amounts from these storms.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly, Northstar to open Wednesday, Kirkwood Friday

Powerful early-season storms combined with the area’s largest snowmaking operations have allowed Vail Resorts’ Lake Tahoe mountains – Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – to open early with 111 acres. Heavenly and Northstar will open on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a combined seven lifts and eight trails, totaling 51 acres.

Squaw Valley Opens for One-Day Fundraiser

Skiers and riders got to head down the mountain at Squaw Valley on Thursday. The resort opened for just four hours for a one-day fundraiser that marked the earliest Squaw Valley has opened to the public since it started keeping records in 1960.
At Squaw Valley, it's a bluebird day. And one for the record books.
"Yeah, this is the earliest we've been open to the public since our records dating back to 1960," says Jenny Kendrick, Public Relations manager for Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows.
But then again, this hasn't been a typical October, thanks to this week's storms.

Possible afternoon showers and thunderstorms today and Saturday

The remnants of post-tropical system Fabio will spread across the Sierra and western Nevada Thursday afternoon, bringing the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms to the Lake Tahoe region through the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday with gusts possible of 35 mph.

Thunderstorms to develop Friday over Lake Tahoe and the Sierra

Low pressure from the Pacific will combine with record high temperatures to produce thunderstorms over Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
This will result in isolated to scattered thunderstorms developing Friday afternoon and evening. Storms will initially develop over the eastern Sierra, northeast California, Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno areas Friday afternoon, then push toward Pyramid Lake and Highway 95 late Friday afternoon into Friday evening.

Thunderstorms possible for Lake Tahoe then snow showers later in the week

With the potential for record-high temperatures in the mix, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon for Lake Tahoe and much of Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Thunderstorms could produce wind gusts to 60 mph with small hail, blowing dust and lighting. Visibility in Western Nevada could be reduced to less than a mile during the active part of the storms.
For Lake Tahoe, scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, mainly between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Weather Service: Snowpack increases with storms but dry weather may return

Here's the latest from the National Weather Service in Reno on the storms: This graph shows the change in snowpack percentage from the SNOTEL sites in the four main Sierra basins. Before the series of storms in the past week, all of the basins were below 10 percent of the season-to-date normals. As of early this morning, the snowpack has increased to around 25-30 percent of normal, which includes partial totals from the Sunday night-Monday storm.

In the photo illustration above, the first three images show the jet stream and large scale (synoptic) pattern changes forecast to take place over the Eastern Pacific Ocean next week. The persistent high pressure ridge that had kept most of the West Coast abnormally dry this winter is forecast to amplify and retrograde allowing the Sub-Tropical Jetstream to bring strong winter storms back to the Sierra. The fourth image shows a significant amount of moisture that should prompt the storms at the end of next week.

Offenbacher talks Tahoe Adventure Film Festival and Flying Wild in Alaska

It has been quite a year for Lake Tahoe's outdoor adventure tribal elder Todd Offenbacher. The film festival founder, Lake Tahoe TV host, mountaineer and unofficial statesmen of all things uniquely outdoors has been to the Arctic Circle, just returned from a trip to Antarctica, and will be featured in two segments on the popular Discovery Channel program Flying Wild in Alaska.
