Emerald Bay Trolley Set to Begin Summer Season But Running Out of Money to Operate
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/09/2014 - 7:49pmMany locals may remember the contest held several years ago to name the new Trolley that would provide transportation service along Highway 50 throughout South Lake Tahoe.
The seasonal trolley is still around but it no longer has a regular route along Highway 50. One may see an occasional trolley along it's old route, but it is just being used for breaks of the bus drivers.

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.
The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

Students in grades 9-12, including rising 9th graders, are encouraged to apply. UB is the newest TRiO grant at Lake Tahoe Community College and is designed to provide fundamental support to high school students in their preparation for college. UB serves 60 students who are from low-income families, who are potentially the first in their families to go to college, or students who are at risk of academic failure.

Sand Harbor Shuttle Service in Place for Summer

In it's third year, the Tahoe Transportation District’s East Shore Express, the shuttle bus provides rides Incline Village to Sand Harbor. They are able to do so with a federal grant and funds gathered from the selling of Lake Tahoe License Plates.

The Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) replaces California's nearly half-century-old, state-controlled school finance system with one that promises more local control as well as greater transparency and fairness. Forest Service Wants Public Input on Incline Dam Project

The Forest Service purchased the 777-acre Incline Lake parcel, located off State Route 431 in Washoe County, Nev., on July 29, 2008, for its recreational, scenic and natural resource values. During the acquisition process, a site investigation and assessment determined that the Incline Lake dam and spillway do not meet federal, state or local standards for a high-hazard dam (designated as such due to downstream development).

Now is the Time to Prevent Colonies of Yellow Jackets in Your South Lake Tahoe Yard
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/07/2014 - 10:36pmThe yellow jacket queens have already been seen in South Lake Tahoe, and if you don't want your backyard volleyball game or summer picnic ruined by them, now is the time to take action.
The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.
So if you take out one queen, you eliminate thousands of bees.

Fallen Leaf Project to Improve Trail Access

The first phase will be worked on this spring and summer. The result will be a new bike path from Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin Bike Path.

Hike or Bike the Tahoe Rim Trail in Bits and Pieces This Summer

The Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge may be just what the doctor ordered since you have all summer to accomplish the whole trail.
Hikers can choose to walk six easy treks of two to six miles each and become a Tahoe Rim Trail Challenger, or, if they want a bit more challenge, there are six moderate hikes of six to 12 miles each to earn Trail Blazer status.

Sierra Snowpack Boosted by Recent Storms But Still Far Below Average
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/01/2014 - 8:17pmThough late season storms have helped skiers and boarders enjoy Lake Tahoe resorts a bit longer, the snowpack measured at 38% of normal today during the monthly test at Echo Summit. The California Department of Water Resources (DWR)reported a statewide average of just 32% of average.
Surveyors from DWR trekked to several monitoring stations as they do annually to measure the water content in snow, as well as depth, to try and pinpoint the state's water supply this summer.
Lakeside Inn and Casino Returns Cattle Grazing to Historic Lake Shore Meadow

Rabe Meadow has historically supported cattle grazing during summer periods on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
Changes, Including Boat Inspection Fee Increase, Coming for 2014 Lake Tahoe Boating Season

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board approved the fee update for the watercraft inspection program to help sustain boater services after a reduction in their federal funding.
The changes the TRPA approved this week:
* The decontamination fee will increase from $25 to $35 dollars only charged to boaters who don’t arrive at the inspection station Clean, Drained and Dry. All other fees will remain the same.
Local Elementary School May Be Rebranded as Sierra House Mountain Academy

If this becomes reality, Sierra House would join the other themed South Lake Tahoe elementary schools: Meyers is the Environmental Magnet School and Tahoe Valley is the Performing Arts Magnet School.

If we ever doubted the connection, those doubts should have been erased through the impacts of the Great Recession on our local economy. We need revenue from tourism to sustain our economy, which in turn helps to fund environmental projects that protect the natural beauty, which draws millions of visitors every year. We cannot have a thriving economy without protecting the environment and we cannot have a beautiful natural environment without money to protect and properly sustain it.

While it's too early to tell if the later times will keep bears out of local trash, both Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and the Bear League say they feel it will make a big difference.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/13/2014 - 10:21pmClarity levels within the iconic blue waters of Lake Tahoe continued a decadelong trend of stabilization in 2013, according to University of California, Davis, scientists who study the lake.
Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC)and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2013 at 70.1 feet. While the reading represents a 5 foot decrease over the previous year, it is still well above the lowest value recorded in 1997 of 64.1 feet and above recent years' averages.
