Washoe Tribe shares their culture and history during Wa-She-Shu It'Deh festival

The Washoe Tribe spent their summers in Lake Tahoe thousands of years ago, and this weekend they shared their history, food and customs with the public during the annual Wa-SheShu It'Deh festival this weekend.

They currently live in four reservation communities in Northern Nevada and California: Woodfords, Dresslerville, Stewart and Carson City as well as in the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. Members from the tribe came together at Valhalla in dance and music, told stories and shared generations of history.

Three Sheriff's boats have sunk in Lake Tahoe this summer

Authorities are looking into why a second boat used by the Washoe County Sheriff's Department sank off the shore near Incline Village Thursday.

The 15 year old boat, Marine 10, was brought to Lake Tahoe from it's normal home in Pyramid Lake because it's predecessor, Marine 20, sank off shore in late May.

Normally, Marine 10 is hooked to a trailer at night but was tied to a buoy instead due to the trailer undergoing maintenance.

Both incidents are under investigation.

South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic brings ‘Freedom of the Forties’ to the Tahoe Keys Marina this year on July 25 and 26.

This year's theme is ‘Freedom of the Forties’ which honors U.S. military and pays homage to antique and classic boats of the forties. World War II veterans are provided free admission to the event, and U.S. military receive discounts on event admission.

Wildman's 50's Drive In opens in South Lake Tahoe

If you were wondering where Wildman's Cafe went to after leaving their Ski Run Marina location, you're in luck....we found them in their new home!

Rami and Patricia Suda Merrikh have opened Wildman's 50's Drive-In at the Y in South Lake Tahoe. While not the coffee house as before, they prepare a wide variety of food on their menu.

We stopped in to see what was up in the mid-century circa establishment. Rami was at the grill and Patricia was taking care of the front counter.

Get Electric at Pedego’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Thank you to all of those who joined us to kick start the summer season. A big thank you to Zephyr Cove Resort for hosting the Music on the Beach BAHM! this past Tuesday evening. As always, we had a great time at the resort. Offering picturesque lakefront entertainment, food and lodging, Zephyr Cove has something for everyone. We’d like to also thank local band Ike and Martin for providing the exceptional entertainment. FitKid Summer Sports Camp Held in South Lake Tahoe

There is one more chance this summer for kids to attend South Lake Tahoe's FitKid Summer Sports Camp put on by Lake Tahoe Community College and Tahoe Center for Orthopedics.

The final camp will be held July 28 through August 1.

Campers, ages 7 to 13, enjoy a week-long summer sports camps that focuses on improving health, wellness, and athletic performance. Campers learn: proper exercise techniques, team-building, sports-specific techniques, and how to make healthy nutritional choices.

The cost is $185 (includes snacks, camp t-shirt, and water bottle.

Large Scale Beach and Lake Tahoe Clean Up After Fireworks

Volunteers are scouring Lake Tahoe beaches and waters, looking for fireworks remnants and other trash.

In response to the lawsuit filed after large amounts of fireworks debris was found on the beach at Pinewild last summer, local service clubs, employee groups and other volunteer teams formed by local agencies joined in beach clean up efforts.

Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

Lead-Based Paint and Your Home Improvement Projects

The spring and summer weather is here and many of us are starting or planning to start those home improvement projects that just can’t be done in the cold and wet months. Maybe we have also heard about the dangers that can be present when working on surfaces that contain lead. As many of us now know, any home that was constructed prior to 1978 may have lead-based paint or lead containing finishes on any of the painted or varnished surfaces on the exterior and interior of the home and on outbuildings, fences and other surfaces as well.

USFS Continues Invasive Plant Elimination Project in Lake Tahoe

The chemical treatment of invasive plants by the U.S. Forest Service in Lake Tahoe will continue through the summer at about 70 different locations totaling 12.5 acres. In South Lake Tahoe the treatment will take place at the Angora wildfire area, Baldwin Beach meadow, Burke Creek trail, Luther Pass campground, Heavenly Creek Meadow, Heavenly Ski Area, Rabe Meadow and the Spooner Summit fire station as well as at several urban lots that the Forest Service controls.

Thieves Break Into South Lake Tahoe's Boys & Girls Club

Two years of hard work and fundraising by the teens at the Boys & Girls Club Lake Tahoe went out the window this weekend when an unknown thief (or thieves) broke into the club and stole the fruits of their labor, a brand new XBox system with games and controllers.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Offers Summer Fun for Kids

Over 120 kids have taken advantage of the summer programs at the Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe. They started the summer off with a bang with a plethora of activities in the first week. They went swimming at the recreation center, enjoyed ice hockey, spent time building paddleboards, went ice skating, had drama club, golf club and bmx club, Jr Staff program, beach trips, trout creek, water day, soccer, sewing, and many more fun activities.

There are still opening available but they are going quickly.

Valhalla Boathouse Theater Sells Out Opening Night; Busy Week Ahead

The opening night for the Valhalla summer season at the Boathouse Theater was a sold out hit with Ray Bonneville's show with Lance Canales and the Flood taking center stage.

The Alan Miller Trio's jazz sounds will fill the boathouse on Tuesday, July 1. Show time is at 7:30 p.m. and presale tickets are recommended due to the number of people turned away for the first show.

Barton Health Holds Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf

Tryouts for Missoula Children's Theater Summer Show, Rapunzel

The Tahoe Arts Project is once again hosting the Missoula Children's Theater this summer in South Lake Tahoe. There are 60 roles available for kids between the ages of 5 and 17 (must be at least 5 and completed Kindergarten). Tryouts will be held on July 7 between 10 a.m. and noon.

It is free to audition. If selected during auditions there is a $50 per child fee to participate. There are some scholarships available so please call Peggy Thompson at 530-542-3632 to apply.

Depending on the role, rehearsals will be held Tuesday through Thursday, July 8-10 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe Police Step Up Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department will conduct targeted pedestrian and bicycle safety law enforcement this summer in order to reduce accidents. They will be deploying officers on bicycles and motorcycles to educate the public.

In 2013, the South Lake Tahoe Police department conducted 42 injury traffic collision investigations that involved serious and/or fatal injuries. 10 of those collisions involved bicycles and 5 involved pedestrians.

Bike Trails in South Lake Tahoe to Undergo Rehabilitation This Summer

Several stretches of bike trails in South Lake Tahoe will receive some much needed attention in July when 2.6 miles of trails are restored.

The Class 1 Bicycle Trail Rehabilitation Project will use funds from Measure R ($250,000) and $475,452 grant funding through Caltrans Bicycle Transportation Authority to fix the 20 year old trails.

July 7th will be the project's starting date and all is expected to be completed around August 9th.

Doggie Day at Cove East

2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

After lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

Historical Marker Celebration at Echo Summit's 1968 Olympic Training Facility

The 1968 Olympics in Mexico City saw records fall and fists rise. Perhaps one of the more memorable Olympics all began at the training facility near South Lake Tahoe at the top of Echo Summit.

On Friday, June 27th a historical marker will be placed at the location of the Echo Summit training site in what is being called "Return to the Summit."

Kids Looking for Things to do This Summer? How About STAR Camp?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services department started their STAR (South Tahoe Adventure Recreation) camps this week. Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.

Leadership Lake Tahoe Class of 2014 Graduates

The Leadership Lake Tahoe class of 2014 graduated from the ten-month program produced by TahoeChamber this week. On June 12, 2014, twenty-two participants, as well as family and friends, celebrated at Aston Lakeland Village with a commencement ceremony and reception to honor the hard work and dedication these individuals displayed throughout the year. Members of the Leadership Lake Tahoe Task Force, Leadership Alumni and TahoeChamber board members congratulated the class on its diligent efforts, as well as its success at the Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit “Elevate Your View” this past March.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Heavenly Valley Zip Lines and Ropes Courses

Heavenly Valley had a ribbon cutting ceremony at the top of the Gondola on Thursday, celebrating the opening of their new summer activities.

These activities have created 120 new jobs in the area and increase Heavenly’s development as a summer destination for families and fun-seekers. Heavenly opens for summer operations Friday, June 13, and will open a third new ropes challenge course, Boulder Cove Challenge Course, on June 27.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Heavenly Unveils Summer Activities: Ropes Courses, Zip Line, Day Camp

Heavenly Mountain Resort has upped the ante on summer fun, introducing new adventures at the top of the Heavenly Gondola for Summer 2014. Summertime guests will have the opportunity to swing through the trees and fly through the air on new experiences including the Boulder Cove and Black Bear Challenge Courses, the Discovery Forest Canopy Course and the 3,300 foot-long Blue Streak zip line. On Friday, June 13, Heavenly Mountain Resort will open these expanded offerings to the public seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through September 1.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe would like to thank the One Medical Group for donating 15 bikes to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. We were lucky enough to receive 8 girls’ bikes and 7 boys’ single speed Huggy bikes with matching helmets.

We plan to utilize these during our summer program to teach the members bike safety and how to properly ride a bike as well as integrating them into our programs.

Chad Houck Named New South Tahoe High Principal

Thomas "Chad" Houck was named the new Principal of South Tahoe High School during Tuesday's School Board meeting.

Houck, his wife Kelly and their four children will be relocating to South Lake Tahoe during the summer (he starts his home search on Wednesday with Realtor Adele Lucas). His first day on the job will be August 1st.

Bagpiper to Play at South Lake Tahoe Library
