TODAY’S WEATHER: Expect Partly Cloudy Skies with Highs 32F-37F (22F-27F on the Slopes) with East Winds around 10mph & possible Ridge Gusts up to 60mph.
TONIGHT: Partly Cloudy then Clearing with overnight Lows 8F to 18F. East winds around 10 mph shifting to SW up to 10mph after midnight.

As people starts to dig out from an overnight storm, holiday travelers will be heading home while others hit the slopes. Expect traffic to be slow over Echo Summit.

Heavenly Mountain Resort: 9" of snow in the last 24 hours. The resort will have 1 percent of the mountain open: 35/4800 acres, 5/28 lifts open, 5/97 runs open.

Kirkwood: 14" of snow in the last 24 hours. The resort will have 3 percent of their terrain open: 60/2300 acres, 3/15 lifts and 6/86 runs.

Sierra at Tahoe: 16" (base) to 24"(summit) of snow in the last 24 hours. They will have 4 lifts and 3 trails open.

By now, most people have heard: Federal courts upheld the 2012 Regional Plan for Lake Tahoe, affirming the blueprint that maintains development caps and strengthens environmental protections while encouraging community revitalization, redevelopment, and updated infrastructure.

Capturing the most attention these days is the traffic in our small communities from millions of people who drive up to enjoy our lake. And the transportation system is where TRPA is giving more focused attention to benefit Tahoe’s environment, economy, and quality of life.

When one sees a vacant lot in the Lake Tahoe Basin with a California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) sign placed on a tree within its borders, it normally that means the parcel will remain vacant.

And in most cases, that is true.

In the basin, CTC owns 4,780 parcels of land totaling 6,400 acres, many of those parcels are about 1/4 acre in size. In the 1980s and 1990s, most of these smaller lots were purchased due to their being deemed environmentally sensitive. If a lot, or a portion of a lot, was once considered to be sensitive, they are permanently protected and cannot be built upon.

During the 2014 Kokanee Salmon run at the U.S. Forest Service's Taylor Creek Visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe, many visitors attempted to get a "selfie" with the bears who frequent the area in search of Salmon. This disregard for both the bear's safety as well as the public's prompted USFS officials to issue warnings and threat to close the area.

Join other Off-Highway Vehicle enthusiasts and fans to help plan the content for the McKinney Rubicon kiosk at a meeting held by the US Forest Service on Thursday, September 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Forest Supervisor's Office at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team is reminding the public that fire danger in the Lake Tahoe Basin remains high due to the ongoing drought and lack of precipitation. Illegal campfires and warming fires continue to be a concern for fire officials and are the major cause of wildfires in the basin. Fire restrictions are still in effect on National Forest land and will remain in effect until the official end of fire season.

Cyclists in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee now have a new tool to use when navigating trails and roads thanks to the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion.

They have unveiled an interactive, online map, one that was designed to match the needs of people biking around Tahoe. It provides bike route directions, elevation profiles and location information for amenity and safety concerns, while at the same time offering an opportunity for community input.

Roger Rosenberger, wildflower photographer extraordinaire, returns to share the current season of wildflowers in vivid photographs and impart advise on how to take your own breathtaking images. This year promises to be amazing. Joining Roger will be Julie Carville, launching her newest book, "Tahoe’s Spectacular Wildflower Trails". This helpful book will guide you along Tahoe’s trails and deeply into the wonders and stories of Sierra plants. Clear trail descriptions and rich natural history will open a world of discovery. An essential trail companion for naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts.

Join Tahoe Heritage Foundation and the US Forest Service for the Friday Evening Program Summer series. This Friday July 8, Tracy Salcedo-Chourre, author of Best Easy Day Hikes Lake Tahoe, as she shares her knowledge of the amazing hiking trails around Lake Tahoe. This event will be held at Taylor Creek Visitor Center at 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public. There is a $5.00 donation to the Tahoe Heritage Foundation.

The number of dead trees in the Sierra Nevada are now at historic levels and have fueled the risk of catastrohpic wildfires according to the U.S. Forest Service.

They announced Wednesday that they have identified an additional 26 million dead trees in California since October 2015, bringing the total to at least 66 million dead trees in the state. The most recent additions are located in six counties across 760,000 acres in the Southern Nevada region.

You may have noticed the bulldozer and tree removal activity adjacent to the Community Playfield on Al Tahoe Blvd this week.

Work has begun on the Community Playfields Expansion Project, one by the City of South Lake Tahoe to bring two new playfields to the area next to the current soccer field at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The Sierra Business Council announced the winners for their annual Sierra Vision Awards, and a South Lake Tahoe business and its owners were on the list.

They give out the awards to recognize and honor leadership in restoring and invigorating our local economies, communities, and environment.

On May 31, 2016, Liberty Utilities began helicopter tree removal for the portion of the 650 Electrical Line Upgrade Project on National Forest System lands north of Highway 267 from Brockway Summit to Kings Beach. Public access to the area will be limited during the helicopter operations for public safety.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee and other Lake Tahoe organizations to host community events and educational activities June 6-13. As visitors flock to the outdoor recreation wonderland that is Lake Tahoe the trails, beaches and forests are experiencing an increase in use and the associated impacts of trash, trail erosion and shoreline degradation.

Another section of what is becoming the premier bikeway circling Lake Tahoe was dedicated in a ceremony behind Lakeside Inn on Wednesday. This new shared-use trail connects to Rabe Meadow with access to Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.

"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."
