South Lake Tahoe group seeks school supplies to take to migrant children

A group from South Lake Tahoe will be returning to Tijuana on November 22 to deliver school supplies to children who are living in shelters while they seek asylum in the United States. The shelters house hundreds of children, many of whom have spent months, if not years, outside of the school system. Many may not have ever been able to attend in their home countries.

The children are being taught by a volunteer-led mobile school project. The most needed supplies are: Notebooks, backpacks, paint, glue, table games, and all general school supplies,

Since the donors were not available to attend their sponsorship dinner, members of Unity at the Lake Church were more than thrilled to be asked to step in as the Adopt A Day sponsor crew volunteers and help serve the 95 dinner guests attending the evening’s meal.

Our organization received donations from over 150 different individuals and businesses and benefited from 64 volunteers who provided over 675 volunteer hours in the Warm Room.

Youth empowerment program to be full of singing and dancing

Unity at the Lake believes that every single child is special, that they make a difference and that they have infinite resources within them. Every Sunday Unity offers a youth empowerment program concurrent with their regular Sunday Service.

In keeping with this, they invite all children in the community to a special musical program, facilitated by Jodene Hurt, a local child educator, on Sunday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m.

High School essay contest sponsored by Unity at the Lake

Unity at the Lake will be giving away $2,000 to local youth during their essay contest, part of their long-standing intention to empower youth in the South Lake Tahoe community.

South Tahoe High School students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit a 400-600 word essay with the title "How I Make a Difference." The essay should explore what these words mean to the student and how they have incorporated them (or intend to incorporate them) into their personal life. Unity will select one winning essay in each grade for each $500 award.

Unity at the Lake guest to offer a Sound Blessing

Unity at the Lake welcomes back their long-time friend Rene Jenkins as he offers a “Sound Blessing” on Sunday, April 8 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at their new location at 870 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

This is a group sound healing ceremony which requires participants to simply sit or lie down and receive, using ancient indigenous instruments along with some sharing of their historic metaphysical attributes.

South Lake Tahoe Warm Room to close on Easter Sunday

An upcoming open house for the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room will not only raise awareness and donations for the seasonal homeless shelter, but it will also be a time to honor the faith community for their support during the first three years of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH).

TCH will host the Open House at on February 15, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Warm Room located at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard.

Tahoe Warm Room to open in new location January 1

For the past week, South Lake Tahoe's homeless have been able to get out of the cold at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, but come January 1 they will be moving into their new home.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will open their warm room at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd, the City owned property that once housed Unity at the Lake. Their operations will begin at 7:00 p.m. The will be open daily from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. until April 1, 2018.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless one step closer to opening Warm Room

After meeting with the City, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, police, neighbors and other interested parties, the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is one step closer to opening a warm room for the winter in South Lake Tahoe and could be open by January 1, 2018.

Possible new home for South Lake Tahoe homeless warming room

At the last count there were 82 homeless persons and ten homeless families living in South Lake Tahoe, and to help protect them during the winter, the Lake Tahoe Homeless Coalition has operated a Warm Room in the city.

They too are now homeless and asked the City Council on Tuesday to move into the city-owned building at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard, the former home of Unity at the Lake church.

Our organization received donations from over 200 different individuals and businesses and benefited from over 60 volunteers who provided over 1600 volunteer hours.

Through the generosity of the John McDougall Pay It Forward Lake Tahoe Community Fund held at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, Bread & Broth provided a roasted chicken dinner with all of the fixings at its Monday Meal on April 24. The $250 grant funds enabled B&B to serve 107 meals and provide for 26 takeout meals to the grateful dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall for the weekly Monday Meal.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank Alpine Carpet One for their support. In December, TCH opened the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room for the winter 2016-17 season. Alpine Carpet One was a generous supporter not only of our fall fundraiser but by donating carpet for our space. This donation helps keep our guests experiencing homelessness more comfortable in the Warm Room. The Warm Room plans to remain open through early April.

Volunteer training being held for this year's Tahoe Warm Room staff

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will soon be opening their Warm Room for a second winter and they are seeking volunteers to help staff it. Last winter they provided 1,820 room nights to 107 different guests over the 102 nights they were open.

A volunteer training will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Unity at the Lake located at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe. To volunteer, training is mandatory as well as a background check.

The location of this year's Warm Room has not been announced though organizers say a contract is ready to be signed.

Toaspern will explain everything you need to know to participate on these trips.

Every skill level and stamina is accommodated as well as the amount of time that is dedicated to recreation. These trips allow you to help preserve wild, beautiful places, meet adventurous new people while spending time in the outdoors.

JD Martin is an acclaimed songwriter of five-number one and ten-top ten country and pop hit singles. His songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, B.J. Thomas, Peter Cetera, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Kathy Mattea. He has won over 15 ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting in Nashville and LA.

Avalanche Awareness Program

Know Before You Go, a program to inform outdoor enthusiasts about avalanche safety, will be presented by Sierra Avalanche Center at the next meeting of the Tahoe Area Sierra Club on February 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at Unity at the Lake.

They will cover the basic safety measures for travel in avalanche terrain which is especially important given the recent wet storms.

The Know Before You Go program was created in 2004 to teach people what they need to know to have fun and stay safe in avalanche terrain.

Warm Room opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

We've seen them walking along the streets, sleeping in the forests or hanging outside of an all night market. The faces of South Lake Tahoe's homeless. Winter can be brutal on the homeless in town with below freezing temperatures, snow covered paths and no place to keep warm.

That is, until today.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of their new Warm Room on Friday, ready to take in their first visitors at 7:00 p.m. It is a safe and warm place for people over 18, getting them out of physically harmful conditions.

Tahoe Area Sierra Club showing movie "Wrenched"

The Tahoe Area Sierra Club will be bringing “Wrenched,” a documentary film about Edward Abbey, to South Lake Tahoe on November 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Unity at the Lake.

Edward Abbey authored twenty-one books in his lifetime, including Desert Solitaire, The Brave Cowboy, and The Fool's Progress. His comic novels, The Monkey Wrench Gang and Hayduke Lives helped inspire a whole generation of environmental activism.

Group looking for homeless "Warm Room" in South Lake Tahoe

For an estimated 20 days a year, homeless people would have access to a "warm room" where they can seek refuge when temperatures drop below freezing and conditions are deemed unsafe.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) asked the South Lake Tahoe City Council today for access to the recreation center between the hours of 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on nights when there is a forecast of extreme temperatures. Wanting to keep the homeless population on the South Shore safe, TCH asked for permission to house approximately 20 men and women on a temporary basis.

LTBMU Forest Supervisor to speak at Tahoe Sierra Club meeting

Jeff Marsolais, the new forest supervisor of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, will be speaking at the next meeting of the Tahoe Area Sierra.

Formerly LTBMU’s deputy supervisor, Marsolais, who now oversees the 154,000 acres around the Lake Tahoe Basin, will be speaking on a variety of issues including Recreation Sustainability and Landscape Collaboration.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and comment in an open forum after the talk. This meeting is free of charge and open to the public.

Center for Spiritual Development classes begin

Unity at the Lake hosts Unity World Day of Prayer, silent prayer vigil, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd. (across from Rec. Center) in South Lake Tahoe. Congregation strives to bring even more 'Unity' to the South Shore

Unity at the Lake began as a small study group in Karen Martin's living room and 17 years later is a thriving, diverse and open spiritual community that well over a hundred locals and visitors call their spiritual home. Their spiritual leaders, Stew and Hillary Bittman, are currently in the process of becoming ordained Interfaith Ministers. Unity has published the "Daily Word" since 1924.

The annual “Tree of Remembrance” Interfaith Ceremony hosted by Barton Hospice and Foundation will be Wednesday evening, December 7, from 5:30pm - 6:30pm at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church in South Lake Tahoe. This event gives attendees the opportunity to reflect on the memories they share and celebrate the lives of those they have lost.
