Longtime Tahoe Douglas Fire Battalion Chief retiring

For 37 years, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) Battalion Chief Rich Nalder has served the community, and now, he's retiring.

Nalder’s service to the Lake Tahoe community began in 1980 and he soon became instrumental in the design and implementation of TDFPD Special Service programs such as rope rescue, confined space and water rescue.

From homeless to housed, EDSO Homeless Outreach Team is making a difference

December 11th, hosting their last AAD of the year, Heavenly’s volunteer sponsor crew was manned by Michelle Beall, Kelly Campbell, Chris Eckert, Katie Ficeto and Frank Papandrea.

Tribute for long time Washoe County Search and Rescue volunteer

For nearly 30 years, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office could rely on volunteer Richard Swartzendruber to deliver equipment necessary to support our Search and Rescue teams. From floods and fires to avalanches, water rescues, injured hikers, and stranded motorists, Richard would overcome conditions that were often extreme to haul boats, command centers or other equipment needed to help the mission succeed.

Richard, described by his family as an “adored husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather,” passed away on December 11, 2017.

Volunteers needed for USFS outdoor programs at Heavenly

Are you a college student looking for an internship this winter? Are you a retired school teacher who misses your students or providing education? Or maybe you simply love the outdoors and want to be involved in your community?

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for volunteers to assist with their Winter Trek and Ski with a Ranger conservation education programs at Heavenly Mountain Resort from January through March 2018.

Barton's 9th annual Festival of Trees and Lights

Each year, children of all ages stop by the Barton Foundation's Festival of Trees and Lights to ring in the holidays during one of the special events including Senior Stroll, Teddy Bear Brunch and the Gala.

From November 30 through December 3, the convention center at MontBleu Resort will transformed into a holiday paradise featuring beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and decorations and a gift shop with famous Barton cheese balls and unique presents.

New member appointed to Lake Valley Fire Board of Directors

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board of Directors has appointed Brian Hogan as a board member-at-large, replacing the seat recently vacated by Robert Rossi.

Hogan is the Regional President for U.S. Bank's Central California and Northern Nevada Community Banking Region and has been employed with the bank for the last 25 years. As regional president, he oversees the banking groups in the region including Commercial, Retail, Business Banking, and Private Banking. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in both Economics and Government from California State University Sacramento.

Placer County looking for someone to reinvent Tahoe City firehouse properties

Next to Commons Beach in North Lake Tahoe are the Place County owned Fire Station 51 and adjacent properties, and they are looking for someone to reinvent the area into a mixed-use development.

Experienced mixed-use development firms and other interested parties are invited to submit letters of interest for a long-term lease and their reuse concept for the former firehouse, Tahoe Community Center building and the former visitor center building.

Barton celebrates South Lake Tahoe non-profits and philanthropy

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Philanthropy and South Lake Tahoe non-profits were recently celebrated by the Barton Foundation as they honored their 2017 grant recipients in a luncheon at Riva Grill.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

American Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

Taxpayer Watchdogs to host fundraising reception for Dan Dellinger

Lake Tahoe Search and Rescue calls on the rise

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the busy summer season is over, those hiking in the mountains around Lake Tahoe needing help getting to safety are on the rise.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.

From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.

Fees at Yosemite, Bryce and 15 other national parks could rise to $70 per car

The National Park Service (NPS) is considering raising fees at their most popular locations during the peak season to pay for overdue and badly needed improvements to the aging infrastructure of national parks. This includes roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms, and other visitor services.

Bread & Broth needs volunteers for their growing programs

Bread & Broth, an all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, has volunteer opportunities for those who are looking to give back and join their ‘heart warming’ efforts to help others.

Bread & Broth (B&B) has grown over the last eight years and now offers the following programs:

- Monday Meal, which is a full-course dinner service every Monday at St. Theresa Grace Hall from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church which provides soup and a simple entrée every Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Robert Rossi honored for decades of dedication to Lake Valley Fire Protection District

For over four decades, Robert Rossi has served the community in several positions from volunteer firefighter to battalion chief to board member.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) honored outgoing Director Robert Rossi, a position he's held since 2010.

USFS celebrates Best in Basin awards for Camp Richardson and Stinger projects

Food Fest to raise funds for South Lake Tahoe schools

Lake Tahoe non-profits invited to apply for $51,000 in grants from American Century Golf

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority has opened the 2017 American Century Championship grant period, encouraging South Lake Tahoe non-profits to apply for a portion of $51,000 to be given to the community.

Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar employees volunteer on EpicPromise Day

Employees from Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood Mountain Resorts participated in various conservation and maintenance projects around Lake Tahoe Saturday as part of EpicPromise Week.

Heavenly employees were at South Tahoe Middle School and Sierra House Elementary on South Shore on September working on several different projects, and kirkwood joined Cal Trout in the Kirkwood Meadow.

Dogs bringing happiness to guests at Barton Skilled Nursing

It's Thursday, and Bella and Sadie are walking the hallways at Barton Skilled Nursing Facility in South Lake Tahoe, stopping by to be stroked, get a hug, a kiss or a dog treat.

The pair, along with owners Lorna and Gary Lefler, are well known at the facility. Sadie, the Lefler's 12-year-old trained therapy dog and Bella, an 18-month old German Shepherd who is a new member of the family.

20th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to a fun, hands-on restoration day on September 23 at 8:00 a.m. Participants in the Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day will help restore the Angora Burn area by improving trails and thinning brush to protect young trees. At 12:30, all volunteers are invited to South Tahoe Brewing Co. for a celebration of 20 years of volunteer restoration with the League to Save Lake Tahoe. They will provide lunch, refreshments and a prize.

South Lake Tahoe youth invited to fly the skies during Young Eagles Rally

Kids will be able to experience South Lake Tahoe from the air during the 25th annual Young Eagles Rally at the Lake Tahoe Airport on September 23, 2017 starting at 8:00 a.m.

The Truckee Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will be hosting the event which provides free airplane rides to youth ages 8 to 17 years old.
Volunteer pilots introduce kids to aviation by giving them the free airplane rides, over 40,000 nationwide. Since EAA started in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, 3400 youth have been able to get into the air.

Family fun at Homebrew for the Homeless fundraiser

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is holding their annual fundraiser, Homebrew for the Homeless, on Saturday, September 23 at the DDRC in Minden, Nevada from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event, presented in collaboration with Hops Envy, and will feature live music, a homebrew beer competition, Poker Run, chili cook-off as well as horseback rides, face painting lawn games and bounce house for children. There will also be food and non-alcoholic beverages. There will also be a silent auction.

Two new cubs for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Two new first-year cubs have arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) during the past eight days, bringing the total now being housed in the South Shore non-profit to six.

As is tradition, LTWC names newly arrived cubs after the area they were found.

"Sky" was found on Skyline Avenue in South Lake Tahoe after being seen for more than two weeks around Elks Club Drive. He even stopped by the agency's compound for a look before moving in. Sky weighed in at 36.1 pounds.

Douglas County Sheriff offers law enforcement classes for seniors

The next Douglas County Sheriff's Senior Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy will be held September 11-15, 2017.

Registration is now being accepted for those interested in attending the academy and learning about law enforcement. Students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County.

Tahoe Blue Vodka to match donations to Keep Tahoe Blue

Since its inception, Tahoe Blue Vodka (through its parent company Tahoe Spirits) has donated back to the protecting the lake they get their name from.

A portion of all sales goes back to the League to Save Lake Tahoe to "Keep Tahoe Blue" and in a new campaign, Tahoe Blue Vodka will batch all donations to the agency tasked with protecting the lake through education, legislation, volunteer training and other efforts.

Summer Bread & Broth 4 Kids partnership with Vail Resorts a success

Over 700 bags of food have been distributed to the youth of South Lake Tahoe so far this summer thanks to a partnership between Bread & Broth 4 Kids (B&B4K) and Vail Resorts/Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Vail CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam donated $125,000 to get a summer food program for youth up to the age of 18 started on the South Shore, and Bread & Broth and Family Resource Center worked together with Heavenly to make it happen.

Eyes on the Lake volunteer training

There is an upcoming fun opportunity to help protect Lake Tahoe at the next Eyes on the Lake training with the League to Save Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, August 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

As part of the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, Eyes on the Lake is returning through September 2017. League staff will host trainings all summer where you can learn how to identify and report aquatic invasive plants found in Tahoe’s lakes and streams and help to Keep Tahoe Blue.

This limber and very kind and thoughtful group of ladies was a joy to have hosting Bread & Broth’s July 24 Monday Meal. To Karen Eberlin, Shannon Liebel, Lucy McLaughlin, Susan Glasson and Liz Norman, B&B would like to thank you and would love to have your yoga group back any time.

The $250 donated for the sponsorship meal enabled the B&B cooks to offer pulled pork and roast beef sandwiches, broccoli, cole slaw, and fruit salad on the evening’s menu.

South Lake Tahoe holds 2nd annual Public Safety Appreciation Day

The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club’s sponsor crew had a busy evening at their Monday, July 10th Adopt A Day of Nourishment dinner event. Helping the Bread & Broth volunteers at their sponsorship meal were SLTYC members George and Liz-Ann Hainsworth, Tina Miranda and Joseph and Bonnie Phair. This hardworking team prepared the utensils, bagged food ‘giveaways’, served the BBQ chicken dinner, worked the drinks and dessert table and ended their evening cleaning and putting away the tables and chairs.

Volunteers hit Lake Tahoe beaches to clean up after the 4th of July

5:00 p.m. update: The beach cleanups for July 5 have concluded, and according to the League to Save Lake Tahoe, 1,678.25 pounds were picked up by their 321 volunteers at 5.64 miles of beaches. And that to the 4,000 pounds collected at El Dorado area beaches and there was 2.84 tons of trash picked up in one day.

As the sun came up over Lake Tahoe the day after the July 4 celebrations, scores of volunteers were headed to the beaches to help clean up the trash left behind on local beaches.

Without insulin humans cannot survive. Type 2 Diabetes is a different condition where a person’s body still produces insulin, but the body is not making use of the insulin, also known as insulin resistance.

LTCC honors longtime Lake Tahoe dentist with Distinguished Alumni Award

Volunteers sought for Douglas County Sheriff's Citizen Patrol and substation duties

Members are sought for two volunteer positions for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO): men and women for both staffing the substations and working on the Citizen Patrol.

Citizen Patrol is a group of volunteers who receive training, uniforms, and a partner to complete various non-hazardous duties for the Sheriff’s Office, they provide invaluable services to DCSO, saving taxpayers a tremendous amount of tax dollars.
