Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority donates to new TAMBA trails
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/20/2017 - 1:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority fundraising effort from last month’s Amgen Tour of California raised more than $1,700 for the Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association toward building new mountain biking and hiking trails. A welcome reception, team presentation and silent auction provided necessary funds toward Phase One construction of the new trail system totaling six miles at Fallen Leaf Lake/Angora Ridge.
This summer TAMBA is working with the U.S. Forest Service to build the initial phase of the eventual 15 miles of new trails. Phase One includes:

Live at Lakeview returns for sixth season in South Lake Tahoe

Starting June 22 and every Thursday until August 31, the free concerts will be at Lakeview Commons at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Toyota and the City of South Lake Tahoe are presenting the series with On Course Events.
Sass Talk: Cannabis discussion continues
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/03/2017 - 9:01amI took a couple of field trips this month related to learning more about cannabis and how it may affect our city if retail, commercial grows, testing, and edible production are implemented. I learned a lot and will share some of the highlights with you.
The first trip was to Breckenridge, a visit I piggybacked on top of a wedding I attended in Vail. I met with their Mayor, City Manager (formerly the police chief) and the assistant city manager. We met for two hours and our talk was primarily centered on their experiences with the legalization of cannabis in Breckenridge.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.
Going above and beyond the call of duty was recognized with awards to both staff members and the public.
LTCC hires Russi Egan as new VP of Administrative Services
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/18/2017 - 9:54pmDuring a special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday, Russi Egan was hired as the college's new Vice President of Administrative Services.
Egan is currently the Vice President of Administrative Services and Chief Financial Officer at Palo Verde College in Blythe, Calif. She will begin her new job at LTCC on July 1.
The position has been vacant since Jeff DeFranco became the school's new Superintendent/President in January, 2017.
Victim identified in South Lake Tahoe collision: Memorial set for Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/18/2017 - 3:45pmArthur "Rocky" Heether has been identified as the man killed as he rode his bike across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle.
Arthur, or Rocky as he was better known, was born in Oakland, California on January 26, 1053. He moved to the South Shore in the early 70's and worked construction on many Tahoe projects.
Youth in Juvenile Treatment Center earn CPR/AED cards
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/15/2017 - 1:12pmEleven youth detained at the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe recently received two certifications: American Heart Association Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
This was the first time the course was offered to the youth housed at the facility, and not only did they get these important certifications but they also earned school credits.
Volunteer at a California State Park in Tahoe and get free camping

People may volunteer for one or both days. Tools, training, lunch (and high fives) are included. As a special treat, volunteers are also invited to tent camp too.

Volunteer paints over unsightly graffiti in Meyers
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 05/08/2017 - 4:38pmA long-time local tired of graffiti problem on the the old and abandoned Tveten property at the bottom of Echo Summit today grabbed a paintbrush and painted over the graffiti.
The volunteer, who wishes to remain anonymous, went to Meek's in Meyers for the needed supplies. The lumber store gave one gallon of paint for free and gave the rest of the supplies at cost.
"I was sick and tired of looking at it every day," said the volunteer.
The property is currently owned by Sarbjit Singh Kang and one of his business names, Tahoe 3208 Highway 50 Corp.

The $250 grant funds enabled B&B to serve 107 meals and provide for 26 takeout meals to the grateful dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall for the weekly Monday Meal.

Positions include course marshals, security and check-in. Marshals assist race staff and local law enforcement authorities along the route monitoring pedestrian traffic, road closures, and updating spectators as the race progresses. No experience is necessary.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers will be doing maintenance and development of the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, weed removal and landscaping at the park in Markleville, 30 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Douglas Fire promotes Ralph Jones to Battalion Chief
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/14/2017 - 5:38pmRalph Jones, a 17-year veteran of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, has been promoted from captain to battalion chief.
Jones has been in fire service for over 30 years and was previously with the East Fork Fire Protection District. He started with TDFPD in 1999 as a firefighter/paramedic.
"He is an accomplished and respected peer," said Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal.
Chief Jones has been married to his wife Julia for 37 years, and they have three daughters, three sons and five grandchildren. He resides in Minden where his service started as a volunteer firefighter in 1984.
Lake Valley Fire Deparment thanks the community

The Ball was given a new theme this year as the fire fighters hosted a sold out elegant event at the Edgewood Tahoe which included fine dining, a presentation by Lake Valley FD Honor Guard, auctioning of firefighters skills such as yard cleanup, car detailing to name a few, an ongoing silent auction packed with dozens of items that were so generously donated to Lake Valley by our community and live music and dancing.

Thinking Day is a long tradition with Girl Scouts where girls have a fun opportunity to learn about their world and explore another country with their troop. About 50 girls tasted new foods at 11 booths, shared what they've learned with each other and played games from around the world. Troop 419 earned an additional Global Action Award for planning the event.

Runoff from rain storms and snowmelt is the largest source of pollution that degrades Lake clarity. League staff will train you to survey local neighborhoods and collect stormwater samples during rain and snowmelt events.

The Kirkwood team led by Tom Fortune included Kelly Keith, Reid and Mattie Devine, and Mike Niccoli and his daughter Iris. Thanks to Vail EpicPromise grant funding, Kirkwood hosts six Adopt A Days a year providing nutritious and filling meals to many hungry members of our community.
What trails do you think need priority maintenance? Let USFS know
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/20/2017 - 2:45pmOver 16 million people use the Pacific Southwest Region of the U.S. Forest Service (R5), and input is needed from those users on what they feel are nine to 15 priority areas for needed trail maintenance.
The region encompasses California and contains more than 16,000 miles of trails managed by USFS.
One the public helps them identify needs, the USFS effort will be with partners and volunteers to increase the pace of trail maintenance.
South Tahoe Greenway one step closer to reality
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/18/2017 - 8:55pmA 3.86 mile shared used bike trail from Van Sickle Bi-State Park to Sierra Boulevard is getting closer to becoming reality after a Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been developed between its three partners.
The first phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail was completed through the Bijou neighborhood in Summer, 2015, but the next phase needed a partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe (City), Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to be completed.

Volunteers needed for science fairs around Lake Tahoe

This year's theme is Earth and Space Science. All the activities will be ready to go and volunteers will be trained for their station.
Don't worry, no science background is needed and you might even learn something new while teaching the local youth!

April 18, 2017 - 1:00pm If you have three-to-five hours a week to help a child, then Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) needs you. Help guide a child through a complex system of social workers, foster parents, and lawyers, while building a consistent, caring, mentoring relationship.
CASAs child advocates are tasked with getting to know a particular child and their specific needs and then communicating those needs, and the child’s voice, to the court. This information is highly critical in the decision-making process of juvenile court proceedings.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - - In 1977, Live Violence Free was founded by volunteers with a phone booth and a desire to make South Lake Tahoe a safer, happier place to live.
Many other local nonprofits in the area have similar stories of their origin. South Lake Tahoe’s nonprofit and other service organizations were forged out of volunteerism. Dedicated individuals looking to make a difference have laid the foundation for the strong culture of service that exists in our community.
To further this culture, people need to continue to give time and labor back to the community.

2017 Miss Carson City and Miss Douglas County crowned

One year later, the two reigning local titleholders in the Miss America organization turned their crowns over to the 2017 winners Saturday night on stage in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.
"Savor every moment, because a year will go by so fast," Ferris said in her farewell speech to the waiting contestants.

Being the biggest snow fall in years, no one was really sure if the meal’s volunteers or any dinner guests would be able to travel the roads to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall. Amazingly, 65 dinner guests and most of the scheduled volunteers attended the dinner.

As the evening dinner’s Adopt A Day sponsor, Heavenly hosted the meal which consisted of a hearty shepherd’s pie served with oven fried zucchini, green salad, fruit salad and a variety of dessert pies and cakes.
CVS now sells overdose reversal drug over the counter in Nevada and California

This brings the total to 37 states where the drugstore chains sells naloxone over-the-counter, including California.
