Chain controls throughout Lake Tahoe region after storm pounds the Sierra
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 03/17/2012 - 9:01amThe winter storm the finally came to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra has dumped several feet of snow, with a few more inches on the way, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. With the heavy stuff now having passed through, the real fun has begun at Lake Tahoe ski areas, who are reporting three or more feet of fresh snow from the storm. Top to bottom, up to five feet of snow has fallen over the past few days at many ski resorts.

Storm systems line up with rain changing to snow for Sierra, Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 03/12/2012 - 8:47amA series of strong weather systems will begin moving through the Sierra on Tuesday bringing heavy rain, snow and wind to the Lake Tahoe region.
The National Weather Service in Reno reports that anywhere between 6 to 10 inches of precipitation is probable along the crest from Lake Tahoe northward through Saturday, bringing several feet of snow to the Sierra. What it will translate at lake level depends on how low the temperatures will drop, according to the weather service.

Prescribed fire resumes Tuesday at Lake Tahoe on Kingsbury Grade
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 6:38pmU.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will resume controlled pile burning on Kingsbury Grade near Andria Drive Tuesday, March 6.
The size of the operation will depend on the condition of the area, according to the Forest Service. Crews may continue operations through the week and possibly through the weekend, weather and conditions permitting.
Lake Tahoe Weather: Warm through Monday, snow Tuesday

A strong cold front will move quickly across the region Tuesday, dropping temperatures up to 25 degrees compared to Monday. Winds will increase late Monday and Tuesday with gusts 40-55 mph in lower elevations, and ridge gusts in the Sierra exceeding 100 mph.

TRPA fireside chat at Sierra Nevada College rescheduled to March 5

The event will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on the campus of Sierra Nevada College at Incline Village.

Chains and snow tires are required over mountain roads and major highways into the basin. Go here for the latest road conditions and here for the latest weather information. Winter storm could bring additional 2 feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra region

Chains and snow tires are required along mountain roads throughout the basin and over mountain passes.

The Basic Speed Law Still Exists on US Highway 50

Based upon the latest Caltrans traffic and engineering study, the speed limit will increase by 5 mph from what is currently posted. However, until the new speed limit signs are posted along US Highway 50, the existing speed limit signs are currently not enforceable, per se. While we are in this transition, we strongly encourage our residents and visitors to continue following the currently posted speed limit signs.
Forest Service continues prescribed fires around Lake Tahoe

The controlled burns may take place near Meeks Bay on the West Shore, Slaughterhouse Canyon on the East Shore and near the end of Andria Drive on Kingsbury Grade. Locations and size of the operations will depend on conditions at each site. Operations may continue through the week and possibly through the weekend, weather permitting.

Gusty winds to 30 mph are expected for valleys ahead of the front, with a quick burst of snow Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Heavy snow expected with quick-moving storm

Weather systems could generate some snow at Lake Tahoe

Behind it will be a slightly larger system bringing some snow to Lake Tahoe.
Precipitation on Saturday will be light and short lived, with the main impact being cooler temperatures by the afternoon with cloudy during the north flow.

Lake Tahoe Finance Director comes highly regarded says Douglas County Manager

Vuletich has resigned to take the position in Douglas County offered to her this week by Mokrohisky, where she will serve as the assistant county manager/chief financial officer.

Sierra snowpack well below normal even after January boost

The graph above shows the Snow Water Equivalent from the current water year through Feb. 1, the average water year (1971-2000), and the 2010-2011 water year.
The Snow Water Equivalent for this water year through Feb. 1 is around 5 inches, compared to more than 20 inches this time last year, according to the weather service.

Weather Service: Snowpack increases with storms but dry weather may return

Before the series of storms in the past week, all of the basins were below 10 percent of the season-to-date normals. As of early this morning, the snowpack has increased to around 25-30 percent of normal, which includes partial totals from the Sunday night-Monday storm.
